| Aluroon05-22-04, 07:44 PM | Ok, to start out I am going to talk about what lead to the pickle I am in right now. My group just abruptly ended our campain at level 4, set in FR. No reason why, just were starting over. This is after I shell out the $50 for the FRCS handbook, and dig up my old 3.0 books that they were playing with. So, were starting over, at level one, in a generic setting. I was in the mood for a change of pace, so I make up a gnome bard, using the abillity score generation method (take 81 points, everything starts at zero, buy point for point) we had used earilier. Along the way I write up a small character history which is posted on my other thread. My scores were Str:8 Dex:15 Con:14 Int:18 Wis:10 Cha:18 Now I had worked up in my mind, and on a peice of paper prediy much what he was like before I showed up for our first meeting with these characters. Well I show up maybe 25 minutes earily so I can talk to the dm about all this. Well we sit down at the table we use (we play at a hobby shop) and I pass him my character sheet. He looks it over and says: Looks good but we need to redo your abillity scores. I ask him why. His reply made my heart stop... Were using a new method, role 3d6 place in order, rerole 1, swich any 2. Well I role, grugingly and get the following numbers 10 11 11 7 7 13 Reroling I get a 11 which I put in int. Looking at the roles I decide theres not much I can do with them so I go with my original character, making note to play him as rather absent minded and annoying. (something I did well the entire session). My final scores came out like this Str:8 Dex:11 Con:12 Int:11 Wis:7 Cha:13 What else could I play? Anyway I an slightly annoyed but dont complain. Everyone else starts to show up, and I was figuring everyone elses scores will be around the same area and well be in a low powered campain. I was wrong. I wont list everyone elses scores, but sufice to say everyone had 1 score above 15, and many had 2 at 16 or beter. Well, now more annoyed I ask the dm if I can rerole. He says no. I ask him if I can add 1 point to cha, just to have a 14 and get a +2 bonus, being good at something atleast. He says no. Understand, I am not a powergamer, I dont mind being at the bottom of the "Food chain". But how am i supposed to play this charater who doesnt have enough skills, is oblivius as He||, is weak and midaldly tough. Oh well I think, atleast in the first battle he will problubly die and I can rerole. I hand my dm a copy of my characters history, which is less then a page, only to have he rebuff me and tell me I dont need it...great. So he cares nothing for backstory. He tells everyone how we get togeather.. We travial on the road togeather....How original... I wont go on, but I will say that I feel cheated by my dice, which caused me to role a natural 20 on a sav/die spell. And by my gnome heritage which gave me a +4 ac bonus aginast the giant that took a swing at me...well acually he roled a 2 but yeh... oh weres something else great. The main creature we fought was something called either a Brigged (spelling?) that I am fairly certion is from 1st edtion, as it wasent in my adnd mm 3rd edtion mm or 3.5 mm. Well anyway I need some new ideas for this character, considering my dm practicly spat at my character history, and ignored everything else. Thats about it Aluroon P.S. Is there a group in Charlotte NC I can join? Btw the brigged thingy looked like a yellowish sick gnome and turned into something giant like... |
| Trydan05-23-04, 11:45 AM | Hmm... sounds a bit tragic, but there are several tactics you can play here. The first, is to play the "role-model-wanna-be". Pick the most powerful character in the group, and hang on his/her every word. Try and emulate that character, and be there for everything. After all, you just met on the road. After a while, you can start interracting even more strongly. "Save me, my hero!", "Can I hold your shield?", "Here, let me help you kill this orc!". And, then start getting in the way. Start to create situations where you really do need to be rescued, and that you start hampering his/her style (i.e. disabling some of that character's amazing stats). And, then, in every pub, you can sing your hero's/heroine's praises. Ham it up! Be innocent, be wide-eyed, be a ... well, a pain, really. Either, it will work out great, and everyone will really enjoy it, or you'll be dead, and hence get to roll up a new character anyway. ;) The second idea, is to go suicidal. Go down in a blaze of glory. Set of traps, go for the front line, act dangerously. You'll be rolling up a new character in no time, but it should be a lot of fun. :D The third idea, is to be pathetic. Play the expert, and ask to take on tasks (listing, spotting, disarming traps, negotiating, etc.) that you have no skill in whatsoever. Blame your luck, but insist that you really are as great as you claim. Start blaming your companions for jinxing/cursing you. And, do try to take on the mission critical tasks too. :smirk: The fourth idea, as you hinted at, is to find another group. |
| Aluroon05-23-04, 12:03 PM | Well I like the first idea you had and it seams really interesting. I could easily go that direction with the ranger as he is the most powerful right now, and I know he would like to kill Imsoweak already (Like the character name?). I have tryed the second idea, several times, namely by provoking attacks of oppertunity from almost every thing we ran into (although it was only the briggen thing and 12 evil fairie things). I also tryed opening the box the evil things came out of, only to have it be empty afterward. The third idea is very unlikey as the dm has almost no depth to his adventures at all. Our last one was go to the town full of undead and find the baroness....great... we did nothing but hack and slash which was real fun as a level 2 wizard...I had like 6 spells and then I was usless...although that might have been a good thing...the wizard has a cha of 6..... I am looking for another group, and have been for some time, however its difficult to locate one or even put one together as dnd got such a bad repuation in the 80's amd 90's, almost to the point that to mention it in many places is taboo.. oh well, thanks for the imput, I guess i just mostly needed to get that off my chest. I look forward to more replys Thanks agian Aluroon |

In you situation I would try #1 that Trydan suggested but really you need another group that actully has at least some roleplaying value to it and has a fair DM. Also it is listed somewhere in the core books that says if you don't have a score higher than a 13 or if your total modifiers are less than 0 you should be allowed to reroll. Which your stats fell into both catagories. |
