| Tarakas03-26-07, 12:07 PM | Hi guys, my name's Tarakas, I'm from Berlin and play Eberron for some time. First I want to apologize for my bad english-grammar :-/ However, there is one thing really annoying me: I want to play some kind of "brawler"-character, a teenager from Sharn, who lives in average circumstances, but has great talent in fighting up his enemies with his bare hands/fists. I like this idea pretty much, though there is none of my friends, who can help me with a choice of a character-class. So, my problem is: What basic-class should I take (or what PC should I aim for?) and would this class be a good choice for my 'brawler'-concept? For now, i have some things i would like to realize for this character: ° His name is Zaek Bloodcoin. He should be male and human, between an age of 14 and 16 years old (no, I am 18 years old, but who cares ;-)), pretty young as you see :-) ° I guess his starting level will be 2 and this is all just because of my DMs stupid explanation, that such a young boy could never be stronger than a sharn watch guard, who is usually at 3rd character lvl - IMO this sucks a lot, it seems he never heard the word "hero". ° I thought already of trying the monk, but then i realized, that he has to be lawful. how should i explain a lawful behavior of a character from the street? Every Rule-Book is allowed for the character-creation and setting is Eberron. I hope you can help me out or giving at least some ideas for such a char - I am totally tired of asking for help, but I guess you are my last hope :-) Thank you. Tarakas. |

Anyway, IMO, the monk is really cool, but the lawfulness is kinda hard to get around. Fighter4/Barbarian1/Reaping Mauler_ has worked for me before. |
| Saraqual03-26-07, 09:34 PM | my suggestion, either go with a rouge or a scout with improved unarmed strike. your fist will have a bit more bang than your regular joe when you have sneak-attack or skirmish maybe a hexblade would make a usefull class untill you qualify for either the reaping mauler or tatooed monk. either way make sure to pick up the superior unarmed strike feat as soon as possible. (3lvl with good bab) |
| Tarakas03-27-07, 10:07 AM | Do you really think the Scout-Class could fit in the concept of an, well, 'street'-character? I thought you could play Scouts just with some kind of soldier or ranger-background? :-) Does the Scout with unarmed strike make good damage on foes? |
| Saraqual03-29-07, 10:38 AM | why not? although traditionaly the scout is a "wilderness" character, it can still be worked to be an "urban" scout. you got the urban ranger dont you? the thing with trying to use fists without being a monk (or having superior unarmed strike) is that you will only be doing 1d4 damage, but with a scout or rouge, you get 1d6 skirmish/sneak attack to boot, which makes you less reliant on weapon damage. the upside for the scout is that he has an easier time triggering his skirmish all on his lonesome than a rouge, the downside is as you progress skirmish damage cant hope to match the sneak attacks. but seing as you would anyway go for a lightly armored character (i assume you would not try a full plate streetfighter) the bonus ac from skirmish might make up for it |

A kid from sharn could run into a Vow of Poverty Swordsage on the streets who takes a liking to the kid and teaches him better ways to stand and where and how to hit people. If your DM uses the training rules it could be problematic. Setting Sun, Shadow Hand, and Tiger Claw all have unarmed strike as a favored weapon. Stances and maneuvers from those three could make a formidable street fighter. Stances:Step of the Wind, Child of Shadow Maneuvers: Counter Charge, Mighty Throw, Clinging Shadow Strike, Shadow Blade Technique, Sudden Leap, Wolf Fang Strike, Claw at the Moon Though your BAB will only be +1 at 2nd level, Discipline Focus aleviates this a bit. +1 Init and Wis to AC help a good bit defensively. With the Improved Unarmed Strike and maneuvers you should be ok for damage output. If you can't tell I am a big fan of ToB I think it has made the game much better by it's very existence. Scout is also a good way to go, especially if you or your DM are not keen on ToB. Rogue is ok but I think D6 HP are too low for unarmed combatants Good luck with your character, Sharn is a rough place. |
