So, I've had this idea for naming crime bosses of various organizations in a city campaign that I am trying to flesh out. The idea is to name them after moral or ethical ideals, or something along a similar vein. Here's what I've got so far, any critiques are welcome.

So far my idea is that the crime in this large metropolitan city is run by a group of people, none of which truly gets along, but have never the less carved out their own niches in the community.

There is the Benevolent Man, who runs all of the smuggling of goods to and from the city.

There is the Upright Man, who is in charge of all of the pick pockets, beggars, street artists and the like.

There is the Virtuous Man (who unknown to but a few is actually the only female of the "Men") who is in charge of all of the prostitution, escorts, houses of pleasure, and political information.

The Righteous Man, who is in charge of all of the "protection" extortion, and basic thug like actions.

The _______ Man, who is in charge of all of the 2nd story operations.

And lastly the Unseen Man, who is in charge of the fences, information dealers, blackmail and bribes. He is also the only one who has been able to remain completely anonymous through out his entire crime boss career, thus Unseen (although a better name would be appreciated.

As the players are entering the game, so does another "man." The Joyous Man is an unknown element from outside the city who plans to remove all of the other "men" from the picture and have all of the organized crime run through him and him alone. He uses drug dealing as his "in" which all of the other bosses have denied the sale of due to it's distasteful nature.

So, what do you think of this? Sound good? Am I missing anything crime wise, or are there any better names for the bosses?

Oh, before I forget, gambling is not a crime syndicate run operation, it is the sole domain of the God of Luck, and all gambling houses are run by his clerics. Many unfortunate events have fallen upon those who have thought otherwise.

Thanks for any help/suggestions

Can you explain 2nd story operations to me a bit? I'm not sure what that means? Catburglary?

Well, since most of the Men's names seem to be antonyms of their actual virtue - why not do the same here. Maybe the Forthright Man? Or the Honest Man?

Yes catburglary, as well as anything theft that really needs to be planned out.

Thank you, that's exactly what I needed.

Alright, since his profession is taking things, how about a title based on giving:

The Charitable Man, The Philanthropic Man or The Generous Man.

I must say, I really like the idea! It has me quite intrigued. So, you say they don't really get along, but I'm sure there are areas where their "portfolios" conflict.. the Virtuous Man's political information and the Unseen Man's blackmail and information dealers must either work together a bit, or be bitter rivals?

With this many crime bosses, is the city government corrupt itself, or just unable to combat the crime?

What about those criminals who don't limit themselves to a single criminal activity? Are they members of multiple gangs?

Ahhh, the Charitable Man, thanks again. :w00t:

The amount that I have fleshed out so far is that there is a sort of truce going on that's going to be disrupted by the Joyous man, as well as actions taken by the PCs most likely. I'd say that the Benevolent Man is pretty much the best off out of the bunch, since he has become relied upon by all to smuggle to and from the city, and doesn't tread on any ones toes.

Then there are the Honest Man (Unseens new and improved name) and the Virtuous Man who have conflicting interests, but have hid their identities, since once someone knows that you were the provider of the information that gave them troubles, your life becomes a lot harder to live. So, since only a very select few in the city know who they are, it's somewhat hard to argue over, so they have stuck to their own areas, and everyone knows that if you want X information, you go to the Honest Man, and if you want Y, you go to the Virtuous Man. Both situations are more of a go to someone in the know and let it be known that you are looking for information on someone/thing, and then wait to be contacted with the price and information. There is also a sort of Dread Pirate Roberts aspect to the Honest Man, since he is the most unknown Man, if someone finds out who he is, and takes him out, they can assume his position without anyone being the wiser.

With this many crime bosses, is the city government corrupt itself, or just unable to combat the crime?

That's kind of a big story, short story being that there was a rebellion against the monarch, and the Noble families that run the country, and many of whom have estates in the City (not the capital city, but near to it in size and political power). This is when the Men seized power within the City, but since they did not side with the rebels, or the monarchy, and since they mainly stick to the less affluent parts of the city, they are tolerated. It's kind of like the Mob in the US, people know that illegal things are being done by this group of people, but unless one of the Men really slips up, or becomes too public, nothing really happens.

What about those criminals who don't limit themselves to a single criminal activity? Are they members of multiple gangs?

Unaffiliated criminals are dealt with differently by each Man. Benevolent would hound their ships/caravans. Upright would probably send a warning before escalating, Rigtheous would probably send a beating before escalating. People don't like messing with the Charitable Man, since messing with a group of people who's job is to get into the most secure locations doesn't really leave one hopeful of a "secure" location. The Virtuous and Honest men would probably just use the new guy as another source of information or as a way of dispersing information until they got too big for their britches, at which point they would use whatever information they had gathered up, against them.

People who show themselves to be good candidates are also usually recruited before or after they have been warned, although once they've popped up on the radar, it's usually a join, don't work, or get out of town, type of deal. :D

Well, I'm glad I could be of some assistance. It really does sound very cool, I'd love to hear more about how it plays out, once you have it up and running.
