Need help on my Illusionist... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am at a loss.

Usually, I think of a great name and the character springs from it. But this time, I have thought of a pretty cool character. With no name. And very little background.

I am trying to think of a way to justify his skills and profession...

He is an Illusionist. (2nd Ed, by the way). And my DM has given me the OK to have Mathematics as a non-weapon prof. So I want to make my Illusionist a mathematician as well.

He also has skill in Cryptography. What I am thinking is, his spells in his book look like Geometric diagrams and Mathematical Equations. Sometimes even musical notes. That way his spells are disguised in a completely non-magic way.

By the way, anybody that has seen my previous posts elswhere knows that I just have this thing for Math. Anyway...

So I need an interesting name. And A background. I just can't come up with an original one.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I see that music, and I think "Hm, is he any good?" Maybe he's a bit of a butterfingers on the keyboard, and as he was trying to work out a new spell with his notes full of geometric objects and strange connotations, he pounded away at an organ where he usually 'coded' his spells into well-disguised and mundane musical works, but something went awry. That Bbm7 came out Diminished, or Suspended when a finger (or two) slipped, and BLAMMO - He ended up here. Or something else weird happened. And thus begins his quest. As far as a name, I have a hard time with names.

This should help with the name

Thanks for the help Kalanth.

I am not sure if I like any of those names yet. We will see.

I am not sure what to make of your stream of consciuosness addition to the thread but thank you for taking the time to write something.

I am still stumped on a background though.

My friend is going to kill me for offering up one of his names, but it's a great name for an arcane, cryptic character who is into complicated things:

For someone with a liking for maths, I'd suggest something latin/greek sounding. Alternatively, you could pick a concept from modern mathematics and alter it slightly, possibly making it Latin in the process. Howabout: Maximus Transitivitus, or Parentheresa or even Exponento?

As for a background, take a look at How to create a role-playing character (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=105563)... it may help.

Trydan,

Thank you very much for the help. That link you gace was extremely helpful. Here is what it produced...

Draco
Illusionist
Human
Chaotic Good

"An Illusionist that specializes in codes and Mathematics."

Personality traits:

Creative
Insightful
Resourcful

Draco is an Illusionist though most mages wouldn't know at first. He appears bookish but can be very people oriented when he wants to be. People and intrigue fascinate him almost as much as Magic and Numbers His study of people gives him insight into his code-breaking and code-making. Appears as a travelling scholar with many books.

Str-low
Dex-med. to low. I am thinking a klutz could make him intersting.
Con-med.
Int-high
Wis-high
Cha-med.

Skills and abilities- mathematics, Spellcraft, Cryptography, Read/Write, Bluff, Sense Motive, maybe Diplomacy, disguise.

Additional:

-Very rarely gives his real name. Skilled at mimicry. Think "Fletch", as in the Chevy Chase movie.

-His spellbook is encrypted in a non-magical way using mathematical equations and geometric diagrams.

-never decieves friends but everybody else is "fair game".
