Actually I'm posting this for my group (who can't roleplay very well). I don't know how to get any of them to roleplay. I've tried: rewards for roleplaying, penalties for ooc talks, assignments(little cards with personal sidequests such as: Figure out why so and so adventures), and given rewards for just trying to roleplay. So what should I do o' wise people of the board? Anyway here is the thief's history. If anyone could give me some suggestions on how to play this character, so they can be passed on to the player.

Adam was raised along the Dragon Coast. His family traveled up and sown it his whole life. When he was 13 his mother and younger sister died from Filth Fever. Fortunately, Adam and his father didn't catch it. Adam's father had been a thief his entire life, so he was teaching Adam how to become a skillful thief. When Adam was seventeen, he and his father were is the city of Westgate. They were searching for an easy target for Adam to try his pick-pocketing skills. Unfortunately, the merchant, or what they thought was a merchant, they had picked out had many disguised guards watching him at all times. It turned out that the merchant was extremely wealthy. Instead of letting his son be imprisoned, Adam's father pleaded with the merchant to let him be his slave so that Adam could be free. The merchant agreed and took Adam's father across the ocean to the Dalelands to the merchant's home. Somehow without being noticed, Adam was able to board the ship and follow his father to the merchant's home. The merchant didn't trust Adam's father and was questioning him in a room in his dungeon. When the guards swapped turns watching the prisoner, Adam crept into the room. Soon after Adam was into the room, he heard some people coming. It was the merchant. He ordered his guards to return to their regular posts until he told them other wise. As the merchant entered the room, Adam stabbed the merchant in the back with a dagger. The merchant fell to the ground as if he were dead. Adam took the money off the merchant and also took what appeared to be a magical rapier hanging from his side, freed his father, and as they were leaving the merchant staggered to his feat and with a single blow from his long sword, took the head off Adam's father. Adam fled to the nearest city where he spent most of the money before he realized he didn't have enough left to return to the Dragon Coast. A few days later he overheard some men talking about some paladins and clerics getting attacked. When the left he went up to the bartender and asked him what they were talking about. The bartender informed him of what had happened and told him about the pay. Adam didn't exactly like the thought adventuring with paladins, but he thought of it as a way to earn some money so he could return to the Dragon Coast.

Thanks in Advance

PS: I see alot of player bashing posts and I would like to admit I'm not a great roleplayer either but at least I'm trying and improving. So any tips for me (especially tips on describing rooms, scenes, monsters, etc.) would be appreciated.

Adam was raised along the Dragon Coast. His family traveled up and sown it his whole life. When he was 13 his mother and younger sister died from Filth Fever. Fortunately, Adam and his father didn't catch it.

Well, to expand this... He travelled as a performing show. His mother and father would perform at each town to make money for the family.

Adam's father had been a thief his entire life, so he was teaching Adam how to become a skillful thief. When Adam was seventeen, he and his father were is the city of Westgate. They were searching for an easy target for Adam to try his pick-pocketing skills.

Here... After his mother and sister's death, his father took them to a secluded place they had found during their travels. After a brief time of mourning his father came and told him the truth. His father was a thief. They would travel the coast and find people to rob, his mother was a decoy.

Probably spent all the money while mourning his father's death and figuring out what he would do next.

He soon realized he didn't have the money to return and decided to find some honest work since thieving had ended the lives of his family. He heard about the job to hunt down some wrong doers and decided he would try this out to see if he could turn his life around. Also, hanging out with paladins is a good way to avoid the merchant until he finds out if he is being searched for.

I see this guy as going through lots of hardships. He learned the only profession available to him and now is trapped by it. He really wants to leave this life of crime, but feels like it is the last connection he has with his family. He decides to use his skills for good (and the right price). His primary goal would be to leave his life of petty larson and build a lasting future (money and name) for his (hopefully) future family.
