Here's what I do know: Elminster and Drizzt are from the realms, and my character will be starting in the Silver Marches. My preferred character types are druid, meatshield (fighter or barb), or face (bard or courtier). I find it really hard to formulate character ideas without knowing something about the world that helped shape them, so I'm hoping that someone here can help me out. Namely: What types of characters are common to the Silver Marches? What is the region like? Is it a mighty nation built on magic, a wild, untamed frontier, or somethign in between? What types of factions exist in the area, and how do they interact with each other? From those three questions, I can probably formulate an idea about a character, and bounce it off of everyone here ot fully flesh it out. |

To the second, it's a pretty diverse area--most of the land is wild, untamed wilderness, but there are several cities that are fairly large and quite civilized. Silverymoon, in particular, would fall under the "mighty nation built with magic" label, since it is protected by epic-level wards and has had a succession of high-level wizards as its ruler for many centuries. But there are also three major dwarf-holds, and a good number of barbarian tribes in the region. Bards are quite common throughout the North, so no problem playing one. The third question, lemme think--there are the Harpers, who are a semi-secret good-aligned organization, hordes of orcs to the north, plenty of dwarves. I'm probably missing a lot, but hopefully this'll give you a general idea. To read more, you could either pick up the 3rd-edition Silver Marches book, or download the 2nd-edition "The North" or "The Savage Frontier", here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads Hope this helps! |
