| Otogi08-26-05, 11:48 AM | What I need is a good backround for my character. Here are the stats: LN Aboleth Shugenja 3 (Water, of course!). I think that his personality should be calm, cool, colective and constantly keeping to himself. Anybody have any ideas? |
| Gingerbread Guy08-26-05, 03:15 PM | You're playing an aboleth? Wow. Uhm.. Honestly, I have no idea where to even begin, as I don't know much about their lifecycle other than from what I've read in the MM. Can you give us any information about the game? How are you going to incorporate an aboleth into the group? ~Ginger |
| Otogi08-26-05, 10:18 PM | Underwater! It's just an idea, my real character is a LG Grey Orc Cleric of Elishsar, level 10. That's my friend's character, she (yes she, her character idea). She loves the sea, and the animals that lives in our oceans. I tried to give her the sea elf idea. But she choose the Aboleth becuase she believes that beauty is on the inside, which I realy didn't didn't care for becuase I thought it would be eaiser to write a backround to a Elf that would be eaiser to make a more appealing backround for a pretty human like woman of the sea than a abomination to nature (which is where the Shugenja idea came from). Got any idea's? |
| Fithero08-27-05, 01:06 AM | well i think the best idea would be to smack the player in the back of the head, if that fails you could try some of these. -Get her to play some *other* ugly on the outside/pretty on the inside underwater creature such as a kuo-toa, locathah, wereshark/dolphin, merfolk, triton.....if she wanted to play an under water creature there is a whole range of things she could have chosen......why the hell did she choose to be an aboleth?!?!?!?!? :uh-huh: I dunno. | Gingerbread Guy08-28-05, 12:48 AM | Aah, okay, now I understand. Still, I really, really, really don't think an Aboleth is the way to go. Aboleths are vile creatures - even the ones that aren't evil. I definetly suggest something else. If you guys are aiming for ECL 10, then maybe a wyrmling bronze dragon might be a good idea (they're 6 HD and +4 ECL). Mephits aren't usually great as PCs, but they're ECL +3 as well, which is workable - and of course, many are aquatic. How about a Nixie, a Water Genasi (or even an Air Genasi.. they don't breathe either, which makes them great for undersea campaigns)? If she really does want to stick to the "beauty is on the inside" concept, she could perhaps work with the DM to create a Lizardfolk variant that prefers salt water, and is perhaps less tropical. They're pretty ugly, but they're misunderstood and not necessarily evil. Also, they're humanoid (which is easier to deal with for a DM). She might even want to try a Scrag, though they're ECL 11. Anyway, all I can say is best of luck! ~Ginger |
| psychocow08-28-05, 03:26 AM | Flavorwise (Lords of Madness source):No such thing as an even remotely good aboleth. Yes that mean no neutral either. Apparently they have an 100% racial memory which means that an aboleth is the same as it parents and grandparents and goes back to the begginging of the planet(or earlier) Their just isn't any nurture for them to change their ideas even if seperated from the family. Even if there was some onclave of maybe half a dozen non LE aboleths they'ld be mega-ultra rare and be hunted by the rest of the abolethian culture. Thats my two sense your campaign may vary on this so of course their is the mechanical reasons. Mechanics wise: They have a pretty rediculous racial modifier both +ecl and hit dice. They also have a realy perverse mind set and a rediculous int score which would be impossible for almost any human to roleplay they are seriously that twisted. So your going to run a campaign in which the character will be silly low leveled fighting things with CRs that will probably get the character killed because of lack of abilities/skills. My vote, don't do it play a kuo-toa. If they just can't be pried from this concept: They should be a very shunned aboleth from aboleth culture. They don't care as much for world domination and just want to spend their lives swimming freely through the ocean. They have found refuge ammong some good natured, accepting sea elves who have learned to trust them. Life among the elves is to mundain though and the aboleth has decided to leave them to see if it can find more aboleth like it's self. It has long term goals to create a kind of alignment free underwater city for other shunned creatures and perhaps evanglize some other aboleth away from their evil ways. |
| TheMrBlack08-29-05, 11:07 AM | I dont see how neutral would be a problem, it's not necessarily good, he/she could just be completely apathetic towards things. You want a history? I think I can help. <name> grew up as every aboleth does, remembering the deeds and memories of his/her forebears. While aging, <name> found that the best way to control and excel in the various cultural races of power was to observe patiently. He/she set out to observe and learn more about those around him/her. Who would make the best minions, best spies, best assassins. What he/she would need to raise him/herself above the others of his race. Evil, he/she understands as being to extreme, and not a legitimate path to control others. Control is what drives him/her. Power comes from control in his/her eyes. Manipulation is key. Play people against each other, watch how they react, and figure out the best way to manipulate them to your ideals and causes. |
