| DwarvinJedi05-02-05, 09:11 PM | My group has done little to none true roleplaying, so for my friend's next campaign I wanted to make a Character and since I have only played a few sorcerers in my life I felt like playing a sorcerer, and for some reason I wanted to play a Frost Mage(I think I was eating ice cream). The setting is his in devolpment homebrew world, and is 5th level(so the character is actually established in the community) first I need to figure out which race to play: Human, Dwarf(the frosty area is full of 'em), Neandrathals(if he lets me, one of my last choices), Uldra(too emotionally haywire for me), or a Dromite(because I love them), then I need to think of rping, (right now I am thinking a LN or LE loyal, but selfish(living alone mostly in the cold will make you kind of selfish). so any tips for a cold sorcerer, and how he/she would act, and stuff. |

I have been rolling this particular conception around in my head for a while, so maybe if I share, then maybe it will be of some help. My character was burned badly as a child, so he has a great dislike of fire. Due to this,he is Lawful by nature( since he sees fire as "chaotic"). Almost all his spells will have an ice/cold theme behind them... even if they are not listed that way in the PHB. How can this get done? Well, let me give you some examples. Magic Missile - blue bolt(s) that look like icicles Grease - slick "icy" surface Glitterdust - looks like snow Web - porous ice wall ( that just happens to resemble a spider web) When you gain Energy Substitution(Cold) as a feat, when your selection can really open up. Good luck. |

Would it be too cliched if he was accidentily forgotten about in the cold and forced to survive by himself? |
| LiXinjian05-06-05, 04:30 PM | About what HypnoticMonk suggested. There's a feat called Spell Thematics. Would work well just for that. I thought your character was supposed to be part of a community? Okay, perhaps your character is seen as the informal leader of this little hamlet. He's not the mayor, but the people come to him to solve their problems. Major problems, that is. His alleged bad temper, isolationist mindset and mysterious powers means that most of the townsfolks give him a wide berth, but every now and then, they come up to him to solve a big issue. He lives in a icy cave a good 30 minutes from the town, and has made it clear in the past that he doesn't like to be disturbed. When monsters threaten the town, he's the one the townspeople go to, a bit reluctantly, to be sure: he's created such an aura of dangerous mystery around himself. So when monsters are on the prowl, or when the mayor's wife goes missing, the Frost Sorceror is paid a visit. That doesn't mean the sorceror does the job himself. Often, if something is outside of his field of expertise, he clandestinely hires adventures, or binds extraplanar creatures to his will to assist in the matter. And he seldom takes coins for his assistance. He keeps a tab of favours owed. In time, he might call upon those favours, from something as trivial as locating a particular individual, to something as incriminating as hiding a (frozen) body or whatnot. Every now and then, your character strolls in town to buy supplies. He seldom speaks to the townsfolks and generally expects to be left alone. Merchants are afraid of him, but the ancient, icy platinum coins of mysterious origin he pays with are a welcomed sight in their purses. In town, people are whispering that he discovered an ancient treasure, and many ill-intentioned goons speak in hushed tones of their desire to explore your sorceror's caves in search of this treasure - eventually. Only the sorceror's repute, the rumours that he has bound an ice troll (or other frost-born creature) to his will to guard it, and his unknown (and vastly exagerated) powers, keep them from doing it. But that doesn't stop them from dreaming about it. Your character may or may not have discovered an ancient treasure. Perhaps those are the coins he received as a gift for sheltering a stranger one night, when the weather was particularly foul. He may or may not keep frost-born creatures as pets and guardians to deter tresspassers. It hardly matters: with him, making an impression on the simplistic folks is mandatory for survival and respect. I take it it's an attitude he's not likely to loose anytime soon. I think he should definitely be human. EDIT: How did he come to be live there, you ask? Well, he was from another town far away, and moved out of there looking to start anew elsewhere. He changed his name to a moniker so that his old townspeople wouldn't know his identity (mostly to keep them from ruining his mysterious act), and claimed he hailed from a town that was burned to ashes by a rampaging band of Frost Giants, a White Dragon, Frost Salamanders, or whathaveyou. Imagine the townsfolks' reaction when they learn a mysterious sorceror named Frostbite has elected residence in a nearby cave! Then he built upon that, using illusions to create this vast aura of mystery that gives him the respect he likes. I think this character, while perhaps good, always looks down on the simpler folks, and feels he should be making decisions in their stead all the time. As to why he'd turn to adventuring, I suppose he could be looking for some exotic components, or simply looking to shake off the boredom of his life. If he does join with a group of adventurers, he's likely to keep it a secret from the people of the town, and conjure some creature to guard his lair - or perhaps even take his place momentarily as himself. Or he could fake his own demise, using a frozen body whose features he changed. His cave, by the way, could contain treasures, frozen monstrous bodies of all kinds, mysterious ruins from the distant past, etc. They could be the main reason he established himself there, or an accidental find. |
| DwarvinJedi05-06-05, 05:10 PM | Well I have decided to make a dwarf that is slightly maniacly insance and sadistic(modeled after Dr. Mengele), also a dwarven-supremist who was exiled from his dwarven community for conducting his "experiments", and has slowly come to the province that the campaign starts in. My only fear is that he might be too evil, even though he does have a good heart, he is just kind of uncaring about the concerns of non-dwarves, unless it will allow him to experiment further, or observe the "lesser races" |
