| JaiaDrottsingr11-26-06, 06:49 PM | My character is named Makidre (Mah-Khi-Dreh), an exiled CG Ghostwise Halfling running around without a clan name. His stats are as follows. Lv. 2 Barbarian Lv. 3 Ex-Druid Lv. 2 Bard Worshipper of Talos. 34. Has Amnesia and cannot remember past his 26th birthday. Speaks Common, and Halfling. He does not remember learning the following languages, but he can speak, read, and write them fluently: Netherese, Gnoll, Dwarven, Druidic, Elven, Sylvan, Chondathan, Undercommon, and Gnome. His only personal possesion is a flask of unstable quicksilver on a chain around his neck. Including the Racial Reductions his ability stats are: STR 14 DEX 17 CON 15 INT 18 WIS 13 CHA 16 His height is 3'7", he weighs 37 lbs. and his eyes are gray blue. He has brown hair and pale skin. Eccentricities: Tendency to lash out at passing beings for no apparent reason (developed during the period of time that he developed amnesia) Edgy Prefers to be left alone. Easily bored Travels a LOT Narsistic Quick to judge Eccentricites NOT developed during forgotten period of time Vacant expression. |

| Elberion12-07-06, 08:27 PM | What's a Ghostwise halfling? How did he get amnesia? Why is he an ex-druid? Ghostwise are Halflings from Forgotten Realms who can communicate telepathically with one and other over a short range. Ex-druids are in the PHB, they lose spells, druid abilities and animal companion. Barbarians and Druids are of the wilderness (usually) so during his amnesiac spell he traded the druidic language (teaching it to a non-druid makes you an ex-druid) for all of these language skills. His motive for that can be as noble or dastardly as you want. As for being a bard, he'll either have to be a wild, chanting, oral-tradition story-teller or (if you want a more urbane figure) he must have rejected the wilderness when he was refused his druidic powers (which would probably imply some kind of noble sacrifice but Talos is an evil god). It's worth remembering that Druids in Forgotten Realms are tied to a deity (usually silvanus, so he's got to be pretty feral to have levels in barbarian and ex-druid ties to Talos; perhaps a Blighter would be a better alternative to the ex-druid situation). I don't think you can rationalise all of those eccentricities together (some imply a nervous, self-doubting figure, others the opposite) unless your character has some kind of elaborate mental health problem (multiple personalities? manic-depressive?) or drug addiction (last two when high, the rest when cold). With Talos and the eccentricities he's probably chaotic-evil or a disturbed chaotic-neutral, and probably only survived thus far due to those bad-ass stats. Apart from the obvious symbolism of the quicksilver it might also have a physical relationship with his disposition(mercury hatbands anyone?) that's abunch of random ideas anyway. |

[skeptical]What realistic drugs exsist in the Forgotten Realms?[/voice] Schizophrenia was my original idea for him, but I'm leaning more towards Epilepsy for his problem. The quicksilver, however, could have rattled his brain if he came in contact with it on his birthday and could have caused a very violent and traumatic period that was blocked from his memories, but it would have to have been leaking for a very long time to erase eight years. I see the entire Chaotic alignment system as mentally disturbed, so I don't often pick CN because I can't play neutral characters well. |

The Book of Vile Darkness has a whole selection of drugs (I believe), and Psionics/Illusion magic can be used by those without scruples to give others a synthetic, hallucinogenic "trip". |

| Carwyn_Nhung12-12-06, 05:20 PM | My character is named Makidre ...... ... Tendency to lash out at passing beings for no apparent reason (developed during the period of time that he developed amnesia) Edgy Prefers to be left alone. Easily bored Travels a LOT Narsistic Quick to judge Surely you will drive all the other players mad? But there's a simple explanation for all this behaviour, he doesn't have a clue what’s going on! If he is simply disassociated by his experience of lost memory, he could have reduced tolerance and patience for waiting things to make sense (he's already waiting to work out what is happening to him and is getting bored of it). With such a random and basically mentally ill character, your best bet may be to make him sympathetic, and drop hints as to why he is like how he is: "If you like, its all the same to me" I would actually think that narcissism would be inappropriate, unless it is an overcompensation for his lack of identity. In this case, you can have him come to a new equilibrium and sense of identity in the context of the party, and as this happens he would start to become more amiable to his party-members, although would react badly to any attempt to add any new player character, or the death of one. In a metagame sense this version causes problems, as his "eccentricities" would be directly related to identity, and creating a new identity in the context of a shared goal, which is exactly the difficulties new players can have, so he would make points that are difficult for other players more difficult, but you can have him use narcissism and random lashing out as his coping mechanism, so it could come back more in times he would find stressful, as opposed to him dumping it on all the other players in your group. As to his history, he could have been rejected by the earth for something ego motivated, making his current state ironic, although it could also have something to do with his deity. He could have lost his oath when he started destroying stuff for his new deity, and the modern volatile Makidre would be happy to carry that on. There we go, something for you to think about, and this way you don't need to think about his backstory for a bit, so you can try to tie it into your campaign. |

| pyro_cat12-23-06, 09:59 PM | I have to say; between the stupid mechanical uselessnesses and the roleplaying abrasiveness of this character, he must be a real pest to play with. That being said; posession is always a possible explanation for strange temperments and disparate class choices. Maybe Talos, being not the nicest of guys, is allowing this possession for a reason and has some interesting plans for the character in the future. Something to colaborate with your DM on. You could find out your character is the vehicle for some sort of insidious plot involving getting an undesirable entity to the Material Plane, for example. |
