As the title says, I have a very rough character concept, but I think it has potential.

My concept is Torian, a kind, polite, and generally all-around good guy (if a bit of a manipulative jerk when it is needed) Kobold Sorcerer. I want him to eventually decend into true madness, and become a quietly insane mastermind.

Unfortunetly, I have no idea how to go about this, so I have a few questions I hope you of the Development forums can answer.

1. Why would he be a nice person?

2. Why would he be slightly manipulative?

3. Why would he fall?

4. Since I'm planning to have him eventually become a Dragon Disiciple (for role-playing reasons mind you) what metallic dragon type should he be? Metallic because he is starting out good-aligned.

I know this is really basic, but please help me. All my other concepts are very hard to fit into normal campaigns, but this one seems like a fine one.

He's a nice guy because people have been nice to him all his life. He grew up in a highly tolerant society where he was treated as an equal and given the opportunity for advancement. People judged him on his skills and later on his power as a sorcerer rather than on his race.

He's slightly manipulative because he found he could be. He doesn't really think of it as taking advantage of people but rather as getting the most out of any deal for himself. He has very strict lines he won't cross such as betrayal or going back on his word but he doesn't have any problem with acting in a mercantile fashion and trying to get the best "bang for his buck" out of any situation.

He would fall because his draconic lineage is too strong in him. The power of draconic magic overwhelms his weaker kobold blood and confuses him. At first its meer dragon traits such as hoarding and territorialism. Later he starts to think he is a dragon and has been falsely locked in another form. He goes mad trying to return to his true form.

I'd go either Gold or Green. Gold makes him easier at first since he's good but Green makes for a better madness. His decline could push him further and further towards a new alignment. On top of that greens are known to be fairly manipulative species so you get a touch of foreshadowing in his early personality.

1. Why would he be a nice person?

He was raised by a human couple that found him at the side of the road. The cliché would be that they couldn't get any children and got this one instead. Or he could have been found by some kind of church or organisation that took him in. A cool option would be an illumian cabal (races of destiny) which is highly secluded and might see a use for this kobold.

2. Why would he be slightly manipulative?

Although he was raised by nice people, the other people didn't really like him. Especially the kids. They thought of him as different and didn't want much to do with him, except bullying him. So, to come by the necessaties of childhood (toys, a little money,...) he would start manipulate other children. In time he became very good at this and he would try to do the same with adults, with some success. If you're going for the illumian cabal, it would be almost a habit that he learns by living there. The cabal members are normally very manipulative because of the illumian psychology.

3. Why would he fall?

Perhaps one of his manipulations went wrong. Perhaps he made a kid steal for him and the kid killed an old man in the act. When the kid was interrogated, it blamed the kobold. Perhaps he was exiled (as he didn't kill the man himself). While exiled he might have ran into the wrong kind of people. Perhaps a band of thieves or assassins that took him in, but would use him for their operations.

Hope these help,

Cheers

Thanks, both of you. I'll be sure to use both your suggestions for Torian! I'll probably even credit him to you when I finally use him in a game!
