Hi, I am about to start playing in a campaign in which I will be a human barbarian. I order to add flavor to the character I searched for quotes but found little/none. Any link or help would be appreciated. Examples I found in a dragon magazine so you know what I'm looking for:

To the mead hall!
Our foes, like grass; we, like scythes
Chains cannot binf the freedom in my heart

etc etc

thanks

One I had in mind for an elementalist character I have yet to run....
"I will send your blood back to the earth!"
Also, try listening to Manowar:
From Dawn of Battle:
"My sword will drink blood!" -Dawn of Battle
"I am the sole descendent of the fire and rage, I was rought upon the earth to rule and battle wage!" - Dawn of Battle (This one is really good for that sort of thing)
"Kill with power!" -Kill with Power
"These hands you see before you will end the light of day!" - Hands of Doom
"I see the fear you feel inside, you can run but never hide, I will hunt you down and tear you limb from!" -Hands of Doom
"Rip their flesh, burn their hearts, stab them in the eyes!" - Hail and Kill
"Thor, God of Thunder, let me die with a sword in my hand!" (change name of diety as fit) - Fight Until we Die
"I am an outlaw on the path of no return! Punisher and swordsman, I was born to burn!" - Black Wind, Fire and Steel

Rhapsody can also work, but has much more of a Paladin / LG Fighter feel:
"Face me, evil bastard!" - Holy Thunderforce
"I will light your evil kingdom, and your heart will burn in flames" - Mighty Ride of the Firelord
"Fight your holy war! Raise your mighty sword!" - Warrior of Ice

of course, there's always the oldies but goodies:

"Die!"
"Die!"
oh, and:
"Die!"

Depends on what type of barbarian you play. I played Grog, a barbarian with a 5 INT so his quotes weren't masterworks of literature...

"Grog Smash!!!"
"Grog Kill!!"
"No understand."

and the one most uttered...

"Huh?"
Skyrocket

"I grow bored. Say something of interest to me quickly, little man. Or else I shall have to amuse myself by breaking parts of you into little bits."

"Enough talk! Let us kill things!"

"Music! Ale! Wenches! These things I live for!"
Alrunic Silverfyre

"Hello...my name is <insert character name here>. You killed my father. Prepare to die!"

Classic...

Or go for a variant...

"Hello. My name is <insert character name here>. You ate my danish. Prepare to die."
Winternova

10-20-03, 11:59 PM
"Your women are dressed so... strangely."

"Ha, you wear the colours of a clown!" (spoken to a noble)

"What do you mean, 'what's haggis?' Are you daft?"

"Remeber - it only takes ten drunk men with torches to destroy in minutes what it took fifty men with education fortnights to build."

"In my homeland, we call this a 'Party'."

Watch the old Conan movies. My favorite was when Conan's master asked some guy what the "best thing" is, and then after the guy replied he said "Wrong! Conan!?"

Conan replied "To crush your enemies, drive them before you, and hear the lamenting of their women."

Gogo Governer Schwarzenegger! :D

The crazy Irish guy from Braveheart would make a cool character to model yours after also. "God says he can get me out of this, but he's pretty sure you're ******!"

I had a barbarian named Grog (short for Grogneo Benevicci Laroche) once, but he had an 18 int (highest ability score before adding bonuses from magic items) and his favorite quote was something like this:

"I intend to dismember your limbs and erradicate you from this plane in a painful and expedient fashion. Ah screw it, GROG SMASH!".

He also had a cart that he claimed was powered by his own sense of self-satisfaction. Actually it just cast mount 1/day and the invisible horse pulled the cart, but he didn't care.

But I realize this sort of thing doesn't really work for most Barbarians. So I'd say somehting like:

BBEG: [evil laugh] "now my vile plan shall come to fruition!"

Barbarian: [Attacks BBEG with claymore] "and now it's not."

Or:

[kicks down unlocked door] "Doornobs are for the weak"

Begins to cry. Conan, the quintessential barbarian.

"To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women."

::Upon seeing a minotaur/ogre/giant striding up to you:: "We shall eat well tonight."

Ahh Heavy Metal offers the coolest quotes for Barbarians.
Manowar and Rhapsody Rule.

Back to the topic Bal Sagoth also have some great quotes.
The Kings of Barbarian Metal.

"by all the gods, we'll ride to where the fray rages the thickest!" BATTLEMAGIC

"The crows will pick your bones clean" BATTLEMAGIC

"Red-Tooth (the name of his axe) thirsts to smite and slaughter!" BATTLEMAGIC

"By all the gods... I swear the ireful edge of dwarf-forged steel shall meet all who dare stand against me! My destiny awaits... I shall carve my path in carnage, and inscribe my saga upon the scrolls of legendry in the spilled blood of slaughtered kings!"
BATTLEMAGIC

"taste the edge of ensorcelled steel!"
THAWARTED BY THE DARK

"all they shall feast upon this night will be cold steel!"
THAWARTED BY THE DARK

"I am the scourge of the devils who dwell in darkness...
Their flesh burns at the touch of my blade of searing vengeance,
And I cast their malign spirits screaming into limbo!"
THAWARTED BY THE DARK

"O' grim gods of battle, empower us this night...
Anoint us with the crimson rain, feed our steel with slaughter...
Let every blow be a killing blow, grant us victory, or a warrior's death."
TO DETHRONE THE WITCH-QUEEN OF MYTOS K'UNN

"The death-ravening black fury fills me,"
TO DETHRONE THE WITCH-QUEEN OF MYTOS K'UNN

"Brooding gods of the north, display to these outlander thralls thine ire,
Envenom our blades with the death-kiss of a thousand serpents,
Unfetter the dread war-wolves within us,
That their claws may rend, and their jaws may be reddened."
TO DETHRONE THE WITCH-QUEEN OF MYTOS K'UNN

"I have a PURPLE head that is bigger than your brain-pot!"

"Now he's crossed the line. Does he expect me to stay here and sing of the greatness of his shield? Get my horse. I shall ride after him and slay him."

"It is too late for me to turn back; All water runs to sea."

"I shall take this treasure, I shall take it to the highest tower in the city, I shall throw it to the crowd below and I shall enjoy the fight."

"Let us return to them as warriors, kill all those that we find and plunder their gold."
Savanye Baen

My favorite barbarian quote has always been, "Mages (or sorcerers) look cute on the end of a spear."

Also, "What makes me happy? A sword and a major land war."

Hiho,

There was once a Dwarven Battlerager in our party back in 2nd Ed. When he charged the field, he used to use the same Dwarven battlecry that no one else in the party understood, since they didn't speak Dwarven. Only the player and the DM knew what it was, and the DM would giggle his head off every time the player shouted it.

One day, we were guiding a gnome out of a cavern, and the Battlerager spied some orcs up ahead. Of course he charged, and yelled his battlecry. The gnome turned pale as a sheet. After the battle, he quietly asked the elven cleric "Uh.. the Dwarf.. he doesn't REALLY eat babies, does he?"

Apparently the dwarf was yelling "EAT THEIR BABIES!" as he charged into combat. I suppose thats pretty ferocious, but it mostly made us laugh. The Dwarf insisited that it lost something in translation. lol

If your barbarian concept doesn't quite run to the "Grog smash!" vein and more to the "noble savage" archetype, you might try:

"Death comes but once for each of us, and now it comes for you."

"I honor my foes for their prowess. Even as we battled in this world, let us drink and tell tales together in the next."

"Beware the fire that stirs in the hearts of the Old People."

"Even as ants, our enemies boil forth ... now, let us smite them."

"Look to the stars. There, the Great Warrior, Each night, he travels the skies, eternally pursuing the other stars -- the Stag, the Wolf, the Bear. When the night ends, he carries his bounty to his wife, the Great Moon, that she might grow full once more."

"Before you spread your cities, your temple, your magic here, this was our land. We offered praises to the Wind, the Stone, and the Sun. Long before you spread to these lands, we were here. And these things -- these jungles of stone, wood and iron, wrought by man's hands -- these things will fade, and so will you. The Wind, the Stone, and the Sun, shall always remain here. And so shall we."

"This world you live in, it is a strange and wondrous thing."

For a barbaric philosophical perspective, check out John, the "Savage" of Huxlery's Brave New World.

Here's another fine quote I remember from when I was a student:

"p is a prime number and a is an integer then ap-1 - 1 is divisible by p, or, equivalently, if p is a prime number and a is an integer then ap - a is divisible by p. For example, if p = 13 then 612 - 1 = 2 176 782 335 which is divisible by 13."

It's a quote from my math teacher. And she was definitely a barbarian. :D

OT...Anyone remember the "What's New?" Dragon? It was a joke monster from Dragon magazine way back. It was the size of a St. Bernard and bright purple. It had flame as a breath weapon, but it's flames didn't hurt living tissue...that's right, it would turn your clothing and equipment to ash but leave you just fine. Anyways, in a 1e campain I played in along time ago the DM put one in as a random encounter. Our barbarian charged the dragon waving his mighty battle axe (the rest of us had read the article, so we stayed put). Here is how the encounter played out...

Barbarian(Orating while charging): "I will kill this foul beast in the name of Odin! The Mighty All-Father that created the heavens and the earth! I am but a mere tool in the All-Father's hand..."

(What's New Dragon breathes fire, immolating all the Barbarian's equipment, weapons and clothing...leaving him standing in shock, bare naked to the world)

Smart A$$ Bard of the group: "Umm...I'm not sure that The All-Father's gonna wanna handle that particular tool..."

One of our players decided he would play a barbarian with a very peculiar trait. Once every now and then he would say something very intellegent that even the party wizard would stop and say, "huh?". Examples include:

"After an extensive pyscho-analysis, your metaphysical equilbrium is disproportionate to your actual physical expertise." (Translation:You are crazy!)
"Extensive cyropratic engagement would be impractical." (Translation:He is dead)
"Lacking of corany movement, bane to my brain and physical endurance." (Translation:My chest hurts.)
"House of ill repute, the one place I must deny, but primal instinct demands conformity and liberalism." (Translation:Should I enter the brothel or not?)

Usually this barbarian only rattles phrases like:

"Mogg like trash!" (Translation: I will destroy this place!)
"Mogg see funny!" (Translation:I have been hurt bad, I don't have much longer to live!")

My one origianal barbarian quote

"As long as there is battle, ale and women, I have little need of your invisible man in the sky."-Gorgoroth to a cleric of St. Cuthbert.(ironicly, no violence ensued)

Some good quotes from movies.

"I must break you."-Rocky IV

or the ever popular quote from Conan.

"Crom, I never prayed to you before, I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you will remember if we were good men, or bad, why we fought or how we died, all that matters is that two stood against many, that's what's important. Valor pleaes you Crom, so grant me one request, grant me revenge, if you do not listen, then the hell with you."

I had a non-barbarian character do that once, only the line delivered was "Little pig, little pig, let me in..."

I guess it was funnier in context.

Another good one is "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. "

Great for all the Architect-types who keep rambling on, what with their "Ergo, concurrently, vis a vis. I don't really know what those mean, I'm just saying them to sound cool."

a whole barrage of Ah-nold quotes seem quite appropiate if your Barbarian tends to have a thick accent.

"If it bleeds, we can kill it."

I Used to roleplay a Barbarian by the name Zorak the Wolf.

I remembered that in old Norse tradition, when visiting a local king, the kings servants would shout out to the king, what deeds you had done.
Once this had been done, the king would exclaim, what he had done.
These spectacles could sometimes take hours.

So I decided Zorak would be the same.
All through the campaign, I would write down the spectacular things I had done and whenever we met people I would introduce myself as
"Zorak the Wolf, slayer of orcs, defiler of the filthy kobolds of Iron Mountain, undead wrangler, he who strikes fear in the heart of pirates, vengeful hand from the north".

Ofcourse this list would grow and as it did so did zoraks pride in exclaiming it in front of bar people, nobles and shopkeepers all over the realms.

I will grind you as grist from the wheel.

Death and war, those were the joys of my youth.

When your body is rent and ruined, and your soul on its way to the Pit, then and only then shall I rest. So swear I.

Pain is the fire which tempers men.

Glory, honor, riches...all this is meaningless. The fierce joy of battlfire and the song of combat, ahhh, that is to live. That has meaning.

Gods? I have no need of gods. Battle is my communion, and rage my faith.

"BAAAAAH!"

And not to mention "RATS!? WHERE!"

And my most favourite. "PREPARE TO TASTE THE STEELY WRATH OF AJIMBO'S SWORD!"

Oh, and how could I forget: "WHEEEE!"

funny, my char is a barb/fighter/cleric.

he hates rates either, but goblins most.

though hes not the stereotypical Barb (Int 13, expertise feat), he would say: "Goblins, where? attaaack!"

although he withdraws from combat, when theres no chance of success or a high chance of (his) death. ;)

You could always have a collection of proverbs that the barbarian could have on hand..

After another PC does badly in a fight:
"My people say, 'a courageous foe is better than a cowardly friend'."
...or something...

some others:

"A bold attempt is half success"

"A curse will not strike out an eye, unless a fist goes with it."

"If blood is spilt on you before breakfast, you will shed blood before nightfall."

Just some odd, neat things to throw in...

These aren't really all that quotable, they're more indicative of my barbarian's attitude when he's feeling a bit cranky.

"OI! Longshanks, keep talking and you'll end up with a mouthfull of teeth."
"That's it! It's go time."
"The first hit is free, but the next one is gonna cost ya..."
"Come say 'hello' to my little friend (an adamantine greatsword)."
"You wanna go?"
"Bring it, motherf***er."
"Screw it, I'm going in."
"Get me more ale. NOW!"
"What do I think about horses? I think they should be served with gravy and onions."
"Buddy, I'm gonna cut you from a$$hole to appetite."
"Get me a box full of kittens and a large wooden mallet..."
"I keep hitting it till it stops moving."

Personally, my favourite kind of Barbarian is the kind with a whopping Int score. Therefor I'm less a fan of 'SHUNK EAT ENEMY!' and rather prefer the kind of spittle-flinging verbal evisceration that can only be born of a truly deranged mind with too much of equal parts anger and intellect. There is no question that the finest paragon of such eloquently vile fury is Spider Jerusalem himself.

"FOR [INSERT NAME OF GOD HERE]"

for me it was always
"FOR KORD!!!!!!!!!"

which I had to shout out everytime I charged, really load so the DM went deaf

"Can I break it?"

"Time to DIE LITTLE MAN!!"

"After killing you 3 times already, I thought you would just give up"

"Why are they always running from me, come back here and get killed"

After BBEG speech

"Thanks for the speech, you are obviously trying to put us to sleep, now do you mind jumping onto my sword or am I going to have to do this the hard way?"

From Baldurs Gate:

"Squeak" From Boo, the Giant Minature Space Hamster

"Where Boo goes Minsc follows"

From Conan the Comic/roleplaying Game:

"GRRRAAAHHHHHHH" As he slices someone in two

Did you know that Conan has Int 16 when he starts?

How sad for you to die, with no honor or freinds to sing over your funeral pyres.

I am prepared to cross beyond the skies with valor of life on my soul, tell me, coward, how prepared is your soul?

I shall strike you down and have your women before your blood dries cold on the stones!

Hmmmm, it is true then, only in steel can you trust.

I have gone many places in my quest, little man, are you the one who can show me to the valkyries?

You disappoint me. I would have thought your sorceries would have conjured you a backbone enough to stand once more before I end your life.

BAH!!! Enough of your words! *Chop aproapriate nearby piece of furniture to drive home point*

*not speaking, cuts through language barrier in one fell swoop....*

By (insert apropriate diety's name and favored weapon, or special attribute, et all) I shall have vengence this night.

I shall think of you only so long as you draw breath before I cut it from your chest. Then I shall remeber your name no more.

This is a day that only one of us will live to taste the wine after the feast.
