Hey there, well, me and my friends are gonna start up a AD&D game soon, and we haven't picked who's dming yet so I don't know any city names unfortunately. I'm gonna play a Halfling Thief.

My name is Malbry the Rat, I'm a thief and up to no good. I was born to a Harlot mother in a dirty city. She never talked of my father, if she even knew who he was at all. In my early years, I helped out in the kitchen of the Inn where my mother "worked". When I grew old enough to fully comprehend where the bread on our table was coming from, I ran away, unable to face the harsh reality that I was a mistake in my mothers eyes. I wasn't the first in my family line to become a runaway though. My mother ran away from her parents when she was a little older than I. She left the simple life in the farm country to come to the city, but obviously things didn't turn out like she hoped. The only thing I really know about her father was that he ran away from his home when he was young, too. He was born into nobility, although he was disowned almost immediately. So I guess you could say I'm a disappointment in a family of disappointments.
After I ran away I became a pickpocket and street-urchin. Working for little and sleeping wherever I could, I grew to know the city well. Growing up on the street only two generations down the line from nobility, although I don't even know the last name of my noble forefathers, has left me with a very distorted view of morals. I had to become a large optimist while I lived in the streets, but I haven't lost my halfling love for creature comforts now that I have settled in more. At times I found myself robbing helpless women in dark alleys, and at other times I charged into such alleys with my daggers flashing to defend young women from being ravished by goons and thugs. No, I am not a thug, thugs are brainless muscle-heads, I'm the opposite, I fight with my wits and my speed. Frankly, I'd prefer to settle a grudge with a few drinks instead of a dagger, but when blows come to blows, I'm not afraid to cut the man down, preferably while he is unaware.
I don't even know who I am. My mother never told me our real last name, she took on a knew one as soon as she entered the city, but I refuse to take on that womans name, she never tried to become something better when I was born, so for that I have forsaken her and left her for the city. On dark nights I often sit atop the roofs, gazing at the stars or city lights, wondering about my heritage. Who was my father? Why did my mother's father leave the comfortable life at court? Maybe I shall learn someday, maybe not. But for now, I make my own last name.

What do you guys think? Anything I should add/ elaborate on?

Sounds like a great background, plenty of plot hooks for the dm too!

Whats his appearance?
Can you give us a little more on his personality? (That part about robbing a woman one night, then defending another the next, while interesting, is somewhat strange)
What are his goals? Does he intend to find out his noble blood or is he going to make his own life and forget the past?

Peace

Why thank you for asking, right when I was done posting and at work I realized I left out appearance.

I am fairly tall for a Halfling(I don't have the chart with me so bleh), I have shoulder length black hair that is untidily tucked behind my ears, which are just slightly pointed. Whenever I mean business I tie my hair in a rogue-knot(ponytail) behind my head. I don't have very much muscle, but I'm slim and quick. Though my skin is pale, it is usually dirty form the open road or the streets. Most people agree the most interesting thing about the way I look is my brilliant emerald green eyes.

As for further on his description...I want to play a sort of polarized rogue. One minute he's contemplating assassinating an innocent person for lots of money, the next he is risking his life to save his friend. I want it to be an inner struggle. To put it as easily as possible, where most players would write down an alignment, our troubled Malbry hasn't fully decided on his moral ground yet.
He's a quick-witted jokester who has a heavy sense of morality, and will likely run away from a few combats in our adventures.

Sometimes I fancy my father a legendary adventurer, other times I worry he is just some peasant who had enough money left over for a ***** that night. I would truly like to discover more of my past, yet I really have no idea where to start, knowing my mother would hardly divulge that information to me. In truth, I haven't contacted my mother in many, many years. I would also like to investigate more about my noble ancestors. Did my grandfather just grow tired of court lifestyle, or did he run away from the corrupt tyranny of his parents?

I've gotta go but I'll add more in a bit.
