I am a half-elf ranger.. male... I need a full length background story but I do not have the time to write one on my own. If anyone is interested in writing parts about my history, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Lets start with what you want to work with:

Where was the character raised? By whom? Did he grow up in an elf community, a human community, or a mixed community (with all sorts of races living together)?

Do you have a name for your character?

Is he going with the two-weapon build or the bow-build?

What kind of skills & feats does he have?

Favored enemy?

Patron diety?

Answer these questions and the background will nearly be done, or at least give us something to work with.

heres one I prepared earlier. I figured that seeing as you gave no direction other than half elf ranger I thought this would do.

Raylthorne the silent hunter (pronounced rail-thorn)

Raylthorne was the middle child and so often felt lost in the gap between his older brother and his younger sister. With eight years separating him from his brother and only two from his sister he felt that his human father favoured his brother, allowing him to do almost as he pleased, while his elven mother doted on his sister as she had always wanted a daughter. At 15 he felt he had had enough of being stuck at home and so he and his adventurous sister suck out of thier home on the edge of town and went to explore the forrested slopes of the nearby mountain.

They had gone no more than half an hours walk from the safety of the village when they were set upon by a troll (favoured enemy giants) on a steep path. armed with little more than rough walking stick the pair froze in fear. The troll was not hungry but in search of some fun and so swatted Raylthorne from the path with one clawed hand. As he fell all Raylthorne could hear was his sisters high pitched scream which ended sickeningly even before he landed.

Scratched, bruised and shaking in fear and horror he ran back to the house to wake his parents. On hearing the news his mother burst into tears and his father flew into a rage beating him until he was senseless. When he awoke his father was gone but his mothers weak sobs could still be heard from the other room. guilt, self loathing and shame flooded him as he blamed himself for his sisters death. Without waiting he pushed himself to his feet and fled the town never to return.

The guilt followed him everywhere he went, feuling his hatered of trolls and giants in general. Raylthorne swore he would do everything he could to prevent the same fate ever being suffered by anyone else and so set out to become the best giant hunter he could.

take it or leave it but in the future, a little more detail such as Braindead345 suggested would be appreciated.

This sort of stuff seems to be happening a little to often lately :nonono:

(Good story by the way Harrow Blade)

Im starting to think that we should do something to resolve this situation of people popping up and asking for complete backgrounds out of the blue, with nothing to work with.

What if we just make a thread (possibly make it a sticky? dunno, wouldnt be needed though) where we pick a random character idea, then write up a short (maybe 100-200 words) backgroundfor them.

For example-

Male Human Rogue = Raised in a small isolated village in the mountains, he was the only one in the town who wasnt extremely superstitious. Not believing the ledgends about the ancient, cursed abbey to the north, he set out to gain his fortune. He found his fortune in the form of a solid gold statue, that when taken from the abbey, placed a terrible curse on his village. Grief sticken, he swore he would not return until he found a way to lift the curse.

This way, people who are short on time or ideas can just jump on the board, grab an idea they like and then run with it. Anybody can just throw up a character whenever they feel like it, the thread wouldnt be a discussion thread, one purely for characters. It saves them time, saves us time and allows people to contribute something meaningfull to the board whenever they want.

Does *anybody* like this idea? If not ill never speak of it again :P

PS: This is nothing against you Piazza2425, its just that this situation has been happening alot lately.

braindead345, good questions and suggestions.

Harrow Blade, very nice story - I like that you give a good rationale for the "silent" hunter.

Fithero - I agree with you about this "stuff" happening a lot - I also like your idea of a {sticky-hopefully} thread with short pre-built backgrounds and I'm willing to contribute.

I'll also second your PS to Piazza2425

It's all good guys. I'm just new to D&D and I didn't know what else was needed. Thank you for all the input and everything. Name is Valandil..... and is gonna go through the archery route. Gettin' ready to play the shackled city and I have the character trait of "Mark of the Beast" which means that I can get lycanthropy more easy than other characters...... since one of my ancestors was infected. And I am more intuned with animals. Well..... if that helps you guys go for it. And sorry about not being specific enough, like I said..... new and I just don't have much time to come up with these fantastic stories that you guys do! I loved yours blade!

I am with you on this one Fithero. I think if we start a thread that has a bunch of Character backgrounds that fit the common race class combos and then possily (depending on how much work we want to make for our selves) have a section of random elements that can add depth or flavour eg. a curse or strange tattoo, a strange ancestor etc. I will gladly contribute.

We may be able to request a skickying once we have it under way. I think it will be a handy helper for those who are unable to create thier own stories.

Sorry for hijacking your thread like this Piazza2425. But your thread has raised an issue that we regulars are begining to notice more often.
If you are still looking for background ideas try the link in my sig. It is something I put together a while back to help fill out character stuff.
enjoy.
