Hello! Im new here and to D&D. im trying to figure out how to create and advance characters. I can't seem to figure out how to know what the modifiers are for the abilities and all that. As an experiment, im making a githyanki based PC. But i dont know how to add the template i want on. Im trying to make it a Half-Brass Dragon 1st Level Githyanki Fighter. I'm clueless on how to figure out everything! Can anyone tell me how to determine modifiers and just about everything else for a character?

That may be a little advanced for a new player. The template and the race both have a level adjustment(adds character levels) so you cannot play that as a first level character.

Example: ***not accurate, just example*** Half Dragon Template (+2 LA), Githyanki (+2 LA), 1st level fighter = 5th level character

So, unless you want the race/template/1st class level, that is not possible.

Secondly and probably more important is that it helps if you have a group to play with. The DM "should" have an idea from a starting point for your character and beginning character levels.

If, one and two have been satisfied then I would suggest posting this on the character optimization boards as they deal with the mechanics of building characters. When you decide to develop a background, personality, or just questions on how to play his personality this is a good forum for that.

Good Luck.

There's no problem on that! I couldn't figure it out at all during the past two months... A Githyanki Half-Brass (kinda odd, better find some good explanation on how he was conceived).

The first thing you do (after having rolled your stats) is take your "base creature", the Githyanki and apply the stats on him.

As we can see Githyanki receive the abilities below:

- +2 Dex, +2 Con, -2 Wis
- Medium size
- 60ft Darkvision
- Psi-like abilities
- Power Resistance/Spell Resistance (depends on the book you use)
- +2 Level Adjustment

Let's take a look at the template you want to add, the Half-Dragon (Monster Manual v.3.5)

- +8 Str, +2 Con, +2 Int, +2 Cha
- 60ft Darkvsion
- Low-light vision
- Claw and Bite attacks
- Natural Armor increase +4
- Breath Weapon (60ft Line of Fire)
- +3 Level Adjustment
-----------

The result:
- You will add to the stats you rolled:
- +8 Str, +2 Dex, +4 Con, +2 Int, -2 Wis, +2 Cha
- 60ft Darkvsion
- Low-light vision
- Natural Armor increase +4
- Breath Weapon (60ft Line of Fire)
- Psi-like abilities
- Power Resistance/Spell Resistance (depends on the book you use)
- +5 Level Adjustment

Now, you are considered a 5th level character for purpose of determining XP to attain your next level.

Then apply your 1st level of Fighter which provides:

- +1 Base Attack Bonus
- +2 Fort, +0 Ref, +0 Will
- 1 bonus Fighter feat
- 1 feat (1st level)
- (2+Int modifier)x4 skill points
- 10 HP+ Con modifier

Remember!!! You now have an ECL (Effective Character Level) of 6. In order to gain your second level of Fighter you must receive experience equal to 21,000 as a 6th level human fighter needs to level up to 7th level.

For any other clarifications, simply ask! I'll be around!

PS: in order to find a stat modifier simply subtract 10 from the score and divide it by 2 (eg. 16-10=6/2=3 --> 16 modifier +3)
