| TimelordSimone04-14-07, 08:09 PM | We're starting a new campaign at 6th level. My character is as follows: Galatia del Silverhyl 6 levels of Sorcerer. Lawful Neutral Str 10, Dex 14, Con 12, Int 16, Wis 8, Cha 16 She's a snobby noble girl. There are two ways of doing things: her way, and the wrong way. She has had a realatively slow adventuring career thus far, usually only performing deeds that help the family in some way. She gets killed by her fiancee that her parents chose for her. (We start the campaign dead. I don't really know why yet.) Her magic is primarily necromantic, and has a very macabre feel over all. (ray of enfeeblement, blindness/deafness, vampiric touch, etc...) Magic runs in the family, from her father's side, but it only shows up in the girls, so her grandmother taught her to hone her magic and stuff. Basically, I was wondering with this sort of magic, what her first, uncontrolled act of magic would have been? I mean, it's not like she set fire to the curtains or anything. I was also trying to figure out why she would be 22 and not married yet, as her parents are marrying her off... Well, thanks in advance for any help. |
| Westbound04-14-07, 10:00 PM | Your first magical act could be just about anything that your DM approves, but you might be kind and suggest it was something like a cantrip. Provided that you're not specializing, and that you avail yourself of other magical schools, a nice Flare might be a very good sign of magical prowess. You could also use Mending to repair your toys or your clothes. Why weren't you married by age 22? Obviously your parents betrothed you, but the groom probably wasn't ready for marriage yet. Perhaps he went to war, or school, or prison. Perhaps his family was jockeying for a better betrothal. A high Charisma score doesn't necessarily mean that your character is good to look at. What if the groom fell in love with another woman and was trying to get out of the betrothal with your character? |
| Stormbrand04-14-07, 11:07 PM | What about an INT 16 snob chasing all the potential suitors away. In a culture which wants to marry off their daughters men do not wives who are smarter and stronger willed than they are. |
| David Argall04-15-07, 02:02 PM | Basically, I was wondering with this sort of magic, what her first, uncontrolled act of magic would have been? I mean, it's not like she set fire to the curtains or anything. Since she has a necromantic bend, her pet kitty died, and she made a zombie out of it. Since it was an act of untrained will, refusing to accept that her dear pet was gone, it re-died in about a week, but everybody realized the girl had to get proper training after that. She has never managed the feat since, in part because her trainer made sure to focus her interests elsewhere. Sorcerers doing things beyond their current level of skill is far from unknown, but sorcerers dying from the effort is also well known. I was also trying to figure out why she would be 22 and not married yet, as her parents are marrying her off... Well, #1 was ended by his tragic death. #2 was also tragic. His family went broke/exiled for treason #3 turned out to already have a wife. #4 the couple met, and each threatened to kill the other, as well as anybody and everybody else involved in their marriage. #5 has vanished and nobody is sure if he is alive or dead. #6 heard about 1-5 and fled. So when #7, the one who apparently kills her, shows up, nobody is asking questions about why he is willing. thanks in advance for any help. Just remember to tell us what happened. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose04-16-07, 03:25 AM | Kitty is a good idea but given the snobby attitude consider this. She likes to ride horses (may not be very good but don't tell her that). One day she challenges her teacher to a race to prove her skill. Teacher is winning handily when she fires a ray of exhaustion at the teacher's horse. As for not married off I love the list from David Argall. |
| David Argall04-16-07, 07:50 PM | The horse race story has possibilities. For one thing, it only involves a 1st level spell, and we don't want to violate the rules more than necessary. But there are flaws too. At the sort of age we want to consider here, our lass is unlikely to feel much sorrow about losing a race to her teacher. She is too aware of his superiority. Much better would be to make her race opponent another noble lass, a "friend" she might well hate to lose to. A problem too is that casting from moving horseback takes some skill, and we are trying to limit our defiance of the rules. Now we might make it a jumping contest. Our girl tries the jump and fails, falling off in a quite undignified manner. Everybody is laughing at her, and her rival the loudest. Now the rival tries, and our furious miss is standing there wishing that something would go wrong and ... We might try a different theme. Her interest in necromancy may be because other family members have similiar interests, and this results in some minor undead running amuk and threatening our lass. Terrified she somehow manages to cast Disrupt Undead [0] or Command Undead [2] just as someone comes to the rescue, and witnesses the spellcasting. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose04-20-07, 12:11 AM | She is both young and arrogant from what was described. A true spoiled snob who probably has many teachers that would have let her win. I think that the combination means it doesn't matter if the teacher should have won or not. Casting from horseback certainly involves a great deal of skill but throwing a temper tantrum, especially after the fall you described, does not and I was imagining the blast as being triggered by just such a tantrum. I would like to hear from timelordsimone to see if any of these have struck a cord. |
| TimelordSimone04-20-07, 12:10 PM | I really should have replied sooner... haha I like the idea of having several fiancees. I am totally using that. Thank you very much for that idea. I'm still unsure on the first act of magic. I won't use the raising the cat. I like the whole horse competition ray of exhaustion thing. I think I'll use the 'friend' one, rather than teacher. But thanks a lot everyone for the help. First game with her tonight. I'll make sure to tell you all how I get on! |
| TimelordSimone04-28-07, 03:16 PM | Okay, so it's been a fortnight and we haven't managed to start the campaign yet. haha Anyway... I was wondering, since the girl is a sorcerer... how likely would it be that her fiancees had pc classes? Rather than all being aristocrats. I mean, the average npc class guy probably wouldn't want a fiancee someone clearly far more powerful than them. I'm thinking number four in the list should defintely be pc class. Cos otherwise Galatia would just kick him in. Anyway... I hope this makes any sense. |
| David Argall04-28-07, 05:27 PM | PC classes are supposed to be rare and so we should not have many of the boyfriends with PC classes. We probably can just leave the question open. It is unlikely the fiances were selected for PC abilities. The prime qualities would have been riches, power, and legal classification as male. While a similar power level makes some sense, the power relationship outside the marriage has little relationship to the one inside it. [If you can't resist a woman's tears, the fact you can level cities is just not going to help.] Even with #4, the threat of mutual slaughter, there is no serious need for equal power. The threats merely make it clear the marriage will not work. If the former fiances don't come into the game, we don't need much detail about them. If the DM does want to drag them in [Her dead boyfriend is back as a lich and still wants her, the man they rescued from a cell is the missing boy, or...], details can get in the way. It will be the DM who will want to decide how many levels of what class they should have. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose04-28-07, 11:54 PM | One other point to take into consideration is that when you're a noble you don't often need PC classes. Money can do for you anything personal skill or power can for a PC. |
