If he's got a greatsword make him a fighter. Simple but effective.

Why dont you make him a cleric or druid? Half-giants dont suffer any penalties to wisdom (or intelligence for that matter, so even a wizard).

A character that has is hell strong but instead focuses on other areas is usually more interesting than a mindless brute. Of course, you could go a cleric of some war god and be more like a war priest..... "repent or be stomped"

Anyway, hope this helps, just dont go the big dumb giant *that* has been done to death.

I like the Half-giant wizard idea.
you could give the guy some characteristics of one of the giant types (stone colored skin, frost giant looks, crimson skin and concentrate on spells of that elemental type.
Example:
A large man with skin of a bluish tint a long white beard and hair and stocky build but taller than a man. carrying a great sword (or great axe).
He then cast ray of frost, A frost ball (instead of fireball) or a freezing web spell.

you get the idea i think

I am thinking Druid would be great for such a character.

He was raised by the humans, but because he was mocked as a child, he spent a lot of time alone, explore the hills and trails around the village. In his explorations he fell into an old tomb and discovered the large shimmering sword of an ancient, long-forgotten Giant Kind. The spiders nearly killed him, and he was barely able to drag himself out of the old, dusty cairn.

He collapsed in an oak grove, dizzy nauseous and nearly hallucinating. The old Druid woman took care of him for a few days until he felt well enough to go home. He made it home feeling like a hero, but took a vow to keep the old woman's secret. The folks in his town didn't take kindly to "witches." From then on, whenever he could, he made his way to the grove, and the woman taught him the ways of nature.

Overtime, he knew that he wouldn't ever fit in the backward hamlet of his origin. He packed what few possesions he had, along with his prized sword and said tearful farewells to his adoptive parents and siblings to strike out on his own.
