The most important event in illumian history is the founding of the race itself -- an event that happened mere centuries ago.

Tarmuid was a monk, scholar, and powerful wizard who lived in a far-off island monastery. A natural linguist, he began to notice certain patterns in ancient magic texts he was translating. Over time, Tarmuid discerned a common pattern to how various ancient languages expressed magical concepts. After years of research and experimentation, Tarmuid developed his own language, based on the underpinnings of magical expression. Tarmuid called this language, invented from the bones of long-dead languages, Illumian.

As Tarmuid became more adept at speaking Illumian, he noticed that each word he spoke carried residual magical power that infused both the speaker and anyone who heard the words. Tarmuid sought a way to use the language itself to create a vessel that would be receptive to the power within his words. After countless failed experiments, Tarmuid developed the Ritual of Words Made Flesh, a spoken rite that would transform any human who heard it into a creature infused with the power of the Illumian language. Through the ritual, what was once human would become illumian -- the Illumian language in tangible, humanoid form.
Before Tarmuid performed the ritual on himself, he performed it upon a man who's life consisted of gaining power and using it in the aid of others. Tarmuid could not know that this man's word was DARKNESS, and that it would corrupt indefinately. The new formed Illumian disapeared the night he was created. Tarmuid then performed the ritual on himself, becoming the world's first illumian. He quickly shared his discovery with the humans living in the monastery, and they too became illumians. Only after creating several hundred illumians did Tarmuid begin to worry that the Ritual of Words Made Flesh could be twisted to other purposes, creating less useful transformations or even utterances that would destroy those who heard them, such as DARKNESS might try to do.

Tarmuid convinced his fellow illumians of the ritual's danger, but they in turn persuaded him not to destroy the instructions for performing the Ritual of Words Made Flesh. Instead, the illumians split up into small groups and scattered across the globe, each group taking along part of the ritual's instructions. Those groups soon evolved into the cabals that are today the foundation of illumian society, and each cabal still guards part of the Ritual of Words Made Flesh. Because illumians now reproduce infant illumians normally, the ritual isn't needed to sustain the illumian race.

In past times, Beacon ((the second Illumian created)) has been sent throughout the cabals to collect the ritual, after losing the first two pieces and his first life to the "Ancient Foe", No one was allowed to take the ritual. They all worry what would happen if the "Ancient Foe" obtained the Ritual. So the pieces are guarded with no spare to security and their defence.

An Illumian Legend tells of the first word created. Beacon. This word was made flesh and given a great task by the god that created us. He was told to find the "Ancient Foe" and destroy it. He then brought the Illumian race from words to flesh. And so, he ventured about existence, searching for the "Ancient Foe". Throughout his quest, Beacon created many great colleges to knowledge (( these called the Guiding Cabals )) and even a Great Tower for those he would train to fight the "Ancient Foe". Yet, his search pulled him from the Tower to often for him to continue teaching. He left it to other great Illumians to teach these. Soon, he learned the evils of the world and was killed. A year later, a child was born with a blinding flash of light emanating from the Bright Sigil encircling its brow. The child was named Beacon the Second. So it was then that the child was taken to the tower and taught of his mission, of his past life and of the "Ancient Foe". This continued through out many years and all eventually came upon a great foe and were slain. I make my way through this world with my power in my hand and my light around my crown. No vices keep me from my quest. I fight for good and guide all those without compunction unto safety should they call for a Beacon of light. I will find the "Ancient Foe", and when I gaze upon my unknown foe, I will kill it and bring peace to my peoples.

-The first entry from Beacon XI's journal found near an ancient ruin four years ago. The ruin was "in ruins" before, but it appeared to be the battle ground for Beacon and some unknown foe. The only thing that makes this a disaster, is the fact that no Beacon has been born since. We can only expect the worse, the "Ancient Foe" has captured Beacon. Our great diviners and neighboring allies have failed all attempts so far, but we are in great hopes that a hired diviner from northern lands will have success. We can only pray to the Creator that Beacon return or that he is safe but indesposed. May a guide be with you.

(( Note: "May a guide be with you." replaced the former saying "May Beacon be with you." two years after his disappearence. Never has the race been over six months without a Beacon. When a Beacon is born, it was safe to assume that within that last six months, the prior has perished. Hence the worry about one not being born in that last four years and the XI not making an appearence. ))

There is need for deconfliction in the two stories above. the journal of Beacon XI says he is the first. this is because no one knows that the first created was DARKNESS and they do no know that DARKNESS is the "Ancient Foe". So if there was any confusion before... let the light be shed upon it and the truth revieled.
