I'm looking for ideas on how to make an old master type monk. You know the guy, Master Po, Pai Mei, Mr Miyagi... that kind of guy.

I'm thinking of making him blind for added flavor. I'll probably use Old rather than Venerable because I still want him to be useful in a fight and will probably also use the Kung Fu Genius and Faerie Mysteries Initiate feats to make him mostly Int based.

To get him over his blindness I think I'll take a level or two of swordsage and get the hearing the air manuver.

Any suggestions on class, feats, background ideas or anything else relating to the character would be greatly appreciated.

There is a monk prc in Frostburn that allows you to stop the aging process all together... thus makin you immortal.. this would be a pretty sweet class to fill this roll.

If you wanted to ignore the blind factor (the old factor is still cool) you could have him as a character that is focused on peace instead of combat.

"Give me a complete map of this area" instead of "kill this creature one on one"

This sort of master monk would have a supreme amount of patience and would probably be able to weather any sort of hardship.

Hope this helps some.

Master Po, is in my sig. :D He's an NPC I made for a campaign I ran a few years ago, but I never got to use him. He's a tricky old guy, who isn't exactly a "pure monk", but plays himself off as one. I planned on having him manipulate the PCs into doing some things for him. The things would actually be for a "good cause", but his way of getting them done would be through manipulation, instead of appeals to charity. And if push came to shove, he could be quite dangerous.

If you added a few levels of Psion, you could pick up powers to get over blindness (Touchsight, for example). There is also this feat (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/divine/divineAbilitiesFeats.htm#blindsight5FtRa dius), and if he has telepathy somehow, he could take the Mindsight feat from Lords of Madness.

The Old master stock character has usually higher wisdom than intelligence. Blindsight, 5' radius is a good start. You also have Intuitive Attack (BoED) that lets you add your WIS modifier instead of STR when using a light weapon, and Zen Archery (CWar) that let you use WIS instead of DEX for ranged attacks.
Using Psionic can be a good way of giving him some amazing and unsuspected talents. He could take the Psionic Fist (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionicFist.html) PrC to combine Psychic Warrior and Monk.

I had an idea for such a character as a mentor for PCs a long time ago. He had one eye, the other was marred by a long, wicked scar, and he never bothered to cover the bad eye with a patch.

He was wise, but he was angry, boorish, and always dismissive of his students. The students were to respect him, not the other way around. He did this to teach his students, all male, how to become men by standing up for themselves. He never told them that, of course, and he never let up the abuse. Only when a student stood up for himself did the master let up, but just a little. However, he wouldn't hurt the students enough to cause permanent damage. He would, however, goad students to attack him, and then he would thump them.

Then, after years of this treatment, he would begin to show respect for the students as they gained in skill and learned to control their passions.
