After a TPK, the DM had us all make new characters and we embarked on a new storyline last week. We were all told to make 10th level characters, and any alignment was available. All of the characters in the party awoke from -apparently- some sort of sleep inside of a stone chamber with skeletal guardians, spiderwebs, and etc. A life or death situation brought us together, and we figured out how to get out of the room. That was the end of our night last week -we were playing the old campaign but then we all died and the DM had to quickly come up with something new. Anyway, so I created a new character, and I started working on a background story, but I'm really not sure where to go from what I have already. I'd also like some input from other members of the board. Anything you'd like to offer -whether it be opinions on the story I currently have or suggestions about other possibilities or where I should go from here- is welcome.

"Olrik, we're sorry, but your family has been murdered."

It's funny how the mind works. My rage; my sorry, and my mental horror won't allow me to remember the faces of my wife and children, but I do remember the words. How could such a curse be lain upon me? Was I not a faithful member of the church? Victory upon victory I had given them against their enemies and their demons. How then could this be allowed to happen? Why then did the church and the priests not defend them?
As I searched for answers; as I grapsed for reasons, my hands and my anger found only my axe and by bow. To the temple then I went; I killed all who were there. I vaguely remember lopping the head from a statue of Moradin before a hundred hands bore me to the ground. Ropes bound me, and I was tossed into a cell.
For days I could hear them debating what would come of me. "But consider the circumstances," one voice said. "Murder and defacing the Soul-Forger's temple cannot be over-looked," I heard another say. What would they do with me?
On the seventh day, in the middle of the night hours, I was awakened by the sound of a voice in my cell. My keen eyes could see nothing, but there was a voice. The voice spoke: "Poor dwarf; poor Olrik...
such a shame that one as zealous and skillful as you should be forsaken."

"Who is this spectre which seeks to mock me from the shadows," I asked.

The voice responded: "I have many names, but names matter little right now. What matters is that I have the power to grant your freedom. I only ask two things in return. First, prove to me your skill by surviving a perilous journey. Secondly, be ready to serve when I have need to call upon you. I assure you that service to me will not be rewarded with apathy."

I agreed to the deal; I then felt a sleep of sorts overcome me. When next I woke, I found myself in a chamber with several strangers, skeletal beasts, and spidery webs. What the future holds I cannot guess, but for now I am free.

A Brief History of Olrik Darkbeard
- former member of the Stonehammer Clan
- served in a special forces platoon which undertook dangerous and virtually suicidal missions against a Beholder Necromancer and its undead forces. The Clan had/has been warring with this nemesis for many years.
- was called upon several times to defend Moradin's temple; was a devout believer
- wife (Olga) and children (Elrike & Diamond) murdered by enemy forces while at church services; while Olrik was on a mission for the church
- recent alignment/mindset change from LG to LN
- desecrated/destroyed clergy and temple of Moradin
- "saved" from legal punishment by a mysterious force with obvious magical and/or divine powers

Alignment
Law vs Chaos
Although skeptical of authority and tradition due to recent events, Olrik still has a personal code which he lives by. He believes in keeping his word and holding up his end of deals as well as many other personal beliefs.

Good vs Evil
Recent events have changed Olrik's views. Whether he is brought back to the light or plunged further into darkness will depend upon what the future holds.

technical info

Olrik Darkbeard
LN fighter 2/ranger 8
ranged combat style
Favored Enemies: Undead and Abberations

I don't have my character sheet with me at the moment, but I'll try to remember what feats I have as best I can.

Rapid Shot
Many Shot
Point Blank Shot
Precise shot
Quick Draw
Iron Will
Brachiation
Weapon Focus composite longbow

Other than that I can't remember at the moment, but I think that should be enough to give an idea of what I have. I also have a +1 Dwarven Waraxe, an +2 Undead Bane Composite Longbow, and a few other magic items.

At the moment I'm just unsure of where to go from here. I think I have a decent background story, but I seem to be lacking motivation as far as what to do with the character from here. What sort of events could bring me back from the light side? What sort of events would push me further toward the darkside? Is there anything else I should think of?

n, that beholder necromancer, seems like a good thing to put into account in the future, who was it that saved you out of that jail, gave you the right to continue your pitiful life?
I’d say this beholder has some good reasons to keep you alive, you seem to have done him some great good destroying the priests/temple of moradin.
He should not show his real self towards you until the moment you discover who it was that actually saved you.

He sees you as a pawn in his game against your old Brethren, you might just be too blind to see it becaus of rage. By allowing him to command you in the future, he might use you to bring more chaos among these Dwarfs.

To find the way back to the path of light, you should start to realize while doing these quests, you should find small clues which involves your Brethren in a bad way of course, until the point that you see through his whole scheme.
That would be the moment to let your DM work on a Encounter with this beast with the party your with right now.

After killing it you could take the corpse of the foul creature to your old clan and beg for forgiveness, they might not forgive you completely, either being executed still, or being dishonoured by becoming a slayer.
To put your life at risk to regain your honour by killing the foulest creatures in the land until your glorious death.
Or by that time you got sick of your character, and they allow you to life with them again. And by that time it's his happy ending. And time for you to create a new character

Good write-up of what's happened so far. As far as advice for how to play or what will happen in the future I'd go with the following.

Play a mix of resignation to and fear of the future. You know who you were and believe that the future will contradict that past. Still you have nothing to go back to. Whatever the future holds, whether it is a future you would choose or not, you will live up to the bargain you have made.
