Raven is the son of the captain of the citadel guard, he is a young warrior in his early teens, He is now seeking adventure with his company to boost his reputation and achieve the respect of his father, who believes he lacks the power to be successful. Raven is a good hearted person, always seeking to help others even if it is almost a certain death situation. He cares deeply about his company and is always there to clear the front lines

Is that a better level one character? I've posted all these stats as i don't know which ones you'll actually need to know so i postde what i thought may be important.

Are you looking to flesh out his background? You certainly have a decent start, but going deeper will help bring the stats into focus. Give him a purpose instead of just a job he enjoys.

It's always one extreme.... either not enough fluff or too much :D

He was training as a citadel guard before he left, his father percieved that he did not have the skills and strength to become strong enough to succeed. Raven then left the castle in a bid to broaden his horizons and become stronger like his father. He is very polite and well mannered and always seeks to help others wherever possible. He is best with a sword and shield combination as he learned from his days in the citadel guard. He doesn't use magic as he excels with physical attacks and is well trained with most martial weapons.

And anything else anyone can advise? :embarrass

When you mention that this character's father thinks he lacks "strength" and "the power to be successful" do you mean mere physical abilities and feats? ie Stats such as STR, CON, DEX and martial feats

Or was this character's father speaking about the strength and power a leader needs? Ie Mental and emotional strength as well as the behaviour and skills of a leader.

*******

The answer you provide to the above questions should give your character different rationales for why (and how) your character is attempting to improve himself. The rationale helps you decide how and why the character will act/react in many circumstances.

A suggestion

From what you have written I consider the character's primary motivation as trying to earn the respect, skills and experiences that a leader needs rather than being a frontline combatant(meat shield/big stick) though he should by no means ignore his capabilities in providing his current group with his efforts as a melee powerhouse.

My viewpoint is slanted this way because as a first level character (class, stats, traits, skills and feats) the character is very much above the average person for melee combat thus he should not feel a need to earn his father's respect in that regard. In counter point to that, while the character currently is not a leader, nor should be he consider himself as one, the character does have good potential for becoming a leader because of his traits, ambition and background.

********

If I have mis-understood this character concept my apologies, I meant no offence.

If his father's criticisim made him feel inadequate, perhaps he over compensates now by trying hard- getting up early to practice his sword fighting, trying to learn new maneuvers with passion, always trying to prove himself. Maybe he would be the last to run from a fight, or wonders what people might say about him and if it will get back to his father. All of this would be under the surface, but he may be a driven type-A personality, especially if he was a first-born and feels there is a lot of expectations to measure up to.

Perhaps he is naturally talented (strong, high endurance, agile), but he hasn't developed his innate abilities into great fighting skills yet. Perhaps this is why his father was harsh on him--he has a great potential but he was wasting it in the guard. Maybe his father is trying to relive his own life through his son, and is disappointed in anything he considers less than great. Maybe Raven's father saw that his son was born to be a hero, and the boy still needs to discover his own worth and destiny.

He is an only child, and the first note on him overcompensating is what i was going for but also i wanted the idea that whilst he tried to hard his father pushed him away from the guard with his harshness because he knew his son was capable of much more.

If that makes sense? :embarrass
