Ok one of my PCs is gonna play a changling in Greyhawk. He has written up a good portion of his background and it goes like so...

He was raised inside of an assassian guild called The Black Brotherhood (I teased him about the Black Panthers with this), but never knew his real parents. The BB taught him all he knew about thievery and even had him start training as a Chameleon before he broke free. Now he's out looking for his family attempting to do good where he can and has to constantly fight off his trained urge to steal and members of the BB.

Now onion layer one is that the family he was stolen from is not his birth parents, but the husband was a member of the BB before they discovered his "son's" talents and had him and his wife killed.

onion layer two is that the PC's real parents were a good-aligned doppleganger who wanted to live out his life as a human and a small villiage beauty. The doppleganger switched his changling child with the second couple's baby in an attempt to hide his identity.

Now I would like to make the PC's future very dramatic concerning his family. Besides the usual breadcrumb trail do you have any ideas on how I can get the PC conflicted about his past?

Ok, the real female parent was a (chaotic-?)good-aligned doppleganger. You could introduce a third onion layer on who was his father ("Your father was an handsome knight, in his way to the crusades. It was my way to encourage him..." she says, with a wink.) Then your DM could find many other onion layers about the father: what was his order? agaisnt who were they crusading? what happened to him? is he still alive? did he become an undead?

Also, what happen with the "second couple's baby"? It should be the son of an assassin, but raised by a good person. When your mother explain you the truth, he should in the same time discover who were his father (a powerful assassin? a ninja?) and his mother (is she really dead???). That NPC could be an ally if he decides to find what really happened to his mother, or an enemy if he decides he wants to follow his father's track.

Present this to your DM as an "indication". The DM could prefer to change a few parts of this to fit his campaign, and add even more twisted ancestry...

good thoughts with the other baby... and real Daddy.

Okay, a few years go by for the biological parents and eventually the Father discover's his wife's secret and what she did to hide it. He attacks her but thier "adopted" child makes the save giving her time to get away. The biological Father becomes an abusive alcoholic, which slowly turns the adopted son meaner.

Now here's were some real fun can come in. The PC tracks down his birth parents only to discover his father is a near dead drunk and the child that took his place hates him. Enter a serious bout of depression and perhaps a walk on the darkside.

The Brotherhood also tracks down the birth parents and finds the heir to thier former member all to ready to get revenge on thier quarry. The Brotherhood enlists the kid and sends him after the PC.

Its the darkness in the "Replacement" that gets the PC back on the side of light. Enter the epic battle.
