| D.K.R.04-05-04, 03:45 AM | Here is what I have so far. I would like a name, just one-name, not a first/last or anything like that - something related to being alone, or the last member of his race, etc. Any suggestions there? Bio: (name) was born to the most powerful shaman of all the tribes of his people, and his mother was one of the best healers there were. His tribe had been the strongest of all the tribes because of the power of his antecessors. On the day of his birth, a message was delivered by a raven; the pet of a shaman from a rival tribe of the people. The message was an omen, a prophecy. "(name) will bring about great deeds in his lifetime, and be the strongest of all the people in his own right. Yet all those near him will suffer greatly and in the end be destroyed because of him, leaving him alone amongst a world of death. Woe to he who brings about (name)'s death, though - that being will know eternal suffering such as none before or ever will again." As it came from a rival shaman, the message was for the most part disregarded; but not forgotten. Then, one year later upon (name)'s birthday, a freak lightening storm came upon the plains, and a column of lightening bathed (name)'s hut in brilliant white fire. He was found still alive, clasped twixt the charred bodies of his parents. Fearing the prophecy, the tribal elders spoke with the members of the tribe. Abandonment may be considered killing him, and none wished the eternal suffering promised from that. Finally, a wizened old woman offered to take (name) to the humans, far away. She knew her own death was nigh anyway, and feared little from the death her burden might bring. This was agreed upon, and she was treated as royalty for a full moon, and then given many treasures of the tribe to aid in her long journey. Taking (name) far to the west, she traveled with him for three years before fate claimed her life (coincidentally, on his fourth birthday) - seemingly of natural causes; though none ever had opportunity or desire to investigate. (name) was left alone in the swamplands, a toddler amongst the vilest of creatures and harshest terrains. As things tend to go with such tales, he was found by a hermit, who had isolated himself from all society. Though no man of any great power, the hermit could read the stars, and had visions at times. He gave (name) his name, meaning 'last of many' in an ancient tongue; seeming to know how appropriate it would become. (name) was raised by the antisocial man for nearly a dozen years when the dreams began. Though he did not know it, it was once again the date of his birth when ominous happenings roused themselves. At first the dreams puzzled him, making no sense. Slowly he began to comprehend them, and realized he was being told to leave his 'father' immediately, without telling the man why or where he was going. Not realizing the importance of visions, he ignored the faint and half-coherent dreams for a full week; until his 'father' vanished without a trace. The dreams became stronger then, guiding him. He knew what his quest was to be, though not how he might accomplish it. He was to travel to the land of his birth and speak with the graves of his ancestors. Travelling for 4 years, getting guidance from his nighttime companions, (name) finally made it to the lands of his birth. He recognized nothing, seeing only a sea of flat and abandoned plains as far as the eye could see. He found a hill which he knew was a burial mound, and communed with the spirits of his ancestors. It was then that (name) awakened his true inner powers; from that point on his ancestors were no longer limited to dream sendings but could speak subtly to his mind at all times. Within days he was as strong a sorcerer as any apprentice his age who had spent their life in training could have hoped to be. It was also clear to him what his new quest was to be, though once again he had no clue how to start, or how he, a man of only 17 years, could possibly bring it to fruition. (name) has to find their murderers and avenge his tribe, avenge all of his peoples. True to the name the old hermit had given him, he is the last of all his kind. [note – a handful of tribes of some human-based offshoot race (human by stats) were all annihilated by some unknown foe – this is his driving force in life, to find out how and why the genocide was committed, and to avenge it.] |
| Trydan04-05-04, 08:37 AM | Here are some suggestions - and their fictional meanings: Nemamic - friend of no-one Schlekunft - dire future (i.e. whatever his future holds, it will bring a terrible outcome) Klihsinier - the abandonned one Rabentag - raven-visited at birth Nebond - the only one Lesprer - social leper (i.e. one whom everyone shuns) Heirlos - without descendents (i.e. the last of the tribe) Heblant - without descendents Monost - single (or alone) in life Clanesten - a one-man tribe Ravenshadow - with ravens for shadows (i.e. plagued with omens - traditionally ravens - that they make up his shadow). I hope this is the sort of this for which you were looking. Nice background, by the way. |

| D.K.R.04-05-04, 06:41 PM | Thanks! Trydan; did you make those up, or are they from some source I could look at for more ideas? I like what you have there - hadn't thought of the Raven concept as part of his name, but that seems to work! FolcoTook; thanks - I use babelfish all the time, not sure why I didn't think of it for this one! I was spending my time looking for a reverse dictionary online - you know, enter a definition get the word(s) - couldn't find one. Thanks again! |
| Lanoitakude04-06-04, 12:11 AM | Here are some names that spring into my mind: 1) Adumbratuus 2) Helius-Muu 3) Gaiden 4) Namakkinth (kudos if you can tell me the siginifigance of that one) 5) Galvanar 6) Sreywolf 7) Lanoitakude - pronounced "La noyt ah koo day" ( heh heh ) 8) Draziw 9) Rerecros 10) Auspex If those don't help, find a english - latin translator, you'll get some sweet stuff. |
| D.K.R.04-06-04, 02:03 AM | Namakkinth - searched dictionaries, language translators, name entymology sites, and fictional character references, can't find that one; so no kudos for me I guess. I did some checking, and I think Dorian may be a good one, no 'true' meaning, but created for the legend of Dorian Grey, which may be appropriate - outliving all of his tribe, etc.? Also came up with Soner (arabic meaning roughly last man)and Demosthanos (death of the people). So far I am leaning most heavily to Dorian, but still open to suggestion. Oh, and I am also open to suggestions on the background - any details seem off? Anything I seem to have left out? Anything you would just personally add? Thanks! |
