I'm playing an Artificer in my first Eberron game. I decided to go with a human from Zilargo, a war orphan who was raised by gnomes. Are there any personality quirks that spring to mind? I mean, I don't want to run around like a giant gnome or anything like that, but what parts of gnome culture might imprint on a human child?

You might have a mind for pranks, or be exceptionally paranoid about them. You could be easy going, or be really sick of people who don't take things seriously. It really depends on how your character related to the gnomes, as in whether or not he liked them. Or he could just be a normal human. Sometimes, being surrounded by people different from ourselves only makes us strive to be more like ourselves.

Well, he might walk with a perpetual stoop, what with all of the low doorways, having to look down to talk down to gnomes, etc.

Maybe he could put a few craft skills into alchemy, to represent how gnomes get taught alchemy.

Also, maybe he keeps an extensive notebook -- not exactly a diary, so much as a ledger, of what he knows about whom, whom he owes favors, and who owes favors to him. Being from Zilargo, he might think of all social interaction as a sort of chess game. If you want a sorta creepy, mildly evil flavor to him, you could have him smiling and laughing as he volunteers to help some other person out with some minor task (say, help moving) -- then, as soon as no one is looking, pulls out a notebook and jots down "Myra -- owes one minor favor to me (re: assistance rendered in moving furniture)." or something like that.

Oh, he's actually quite an Alchemist. I like the the "chess game" idea...which book would you recommend to learn more about the culture of Zilargo? Is it in the main Eberron book, or the Player''s Guide?

I got my ideas from the Gnomes of Zilargo Dragonshards:
