| Arikas10-17-05, 02:43 AM | Im thinking of creating a strong paladin of helm. But im torn, because i dont want to multiclass or PrC because the paladin's aura never really improves that way. So anybody have any suggestions? I essentially want him to be a "Protect those who cannot protect themselves" noble man. (mostly looking as a role playing character) thanks in advance! |
| Fithero10-17-05, 03:10 AM | Well first of all, leave the idea of a paladin in full plate riding a horse, its been done to death. Perhaps your character protects those who cannot protect themselves in a way other than combat. If he is a noble man, perhaps he focuses on raising money/ gathering much needed supplies for the needy. Maybe he could focus more on charisma and be a social character, instead of strength and being a combat character. It would make for an interesting change of pace, he would still be able to hold his own in combat, but he would be more of a focused face for the party instead of a tank. I dunno... shake things up a little. Later |

| Tzu-Theory10-17-05, 09:52 PM | I often play Clerics of Helm. I play them much as a reflection of their deity where they choose dutifulness over all else. Wether they are good or bad matters not, I play them as the epitome of protection. Just my take... |
| Uberwoot10-17-05, 10:49 PM | The idea of a Helmite paladin with a preference for diplomacy over combat is a decent idea, but would require careful consideration. Such a Helmite would likely be patient and observant, prone to spend as much time as possible gathering information and planning. High charisma and wisdom would benefit such a character, more as an information-gathering tool than a persuasive one. A high wisdom benefits spot, listen, sense motive, and other checks- all of value to an observer. However, certainly don't make him eschew combat entirely. After all, Helm is a guardian god- and sometimes you have to fight to protect your trust. |

| Fithero10-18-05, 03:14 AM | Argh!!! Not a bastard sword... it just screams paladin. Try something new, such as some sort of polearm or a flail or something... heck even an axe would be good for a change. Later |

Later was thinking of a warmace or a maul from complete warrior, but yea that screams paladin as well heh |
| monkmania10-18-05, 12:35 PM | His holy symbol is an upright war gauntlet... I think it would be pretty awesome to b**** slap evil upside the head for great justice... |
| Uberwoot10-18-05, 01:26 PM | His holy symbol is an upright war gauntlet... I think it would be pretty awesome to b**** slap evil upside the head for great justice... Man, that just screams paladin. If you don't do it, I'm going to. |
| Fithero10-18-05, 05:33 PM | A paladin who smites his foes with his spiked gauntlets! (You could pick up two weapons fighting... that would be cool) He could go round challenging people to duels... after he slaps them across the face with his gauntlet. Its looney toons all over again! :D I love it. Later |
| Llochlyn10-18-05, 06:51 PM | Mh if you feel someday getting out of paladin is right, for this protector god, whose sword is called 'eternal alertness' (I'm translating from french to english, sorry) the idea of the Vigilante class strikes me as a nice one, for an inquisitive Paladin... Complete adventurer... those guy are great for role playing a lawful lawful character... |
| Elvis Gone Warlock10-18-05, 07:19 PM | Lawful stupid paladins. :pbbbtt: Back on topic, it would be cool to have a paladin wielding a rapier. But that doesn't really work with a protector deity. I'd go greatclub, or maybe a greataxe. If you want a shield though, make it a greataxe of the size below yours. A small greataxe does d10 damage, has a x3 critical, is one-handed, and doesn't need a feat. :schemes: It also might be worthwhile to take the deflect arrows feat path, just to go with the protector idea. |
| Amphetryon10-18-05, 07:31 PM | the idea of the Vigilante class strikes me as a nice one, for an inquisitive Paladin Sounds like the Dark Knight to me. Dragon Magazine did publish an article arguing that he's Lawful Good, after all. Of course, some might argue that the archetype has been done to death. |
| Llochlyn10-18-05, 07:42 PM | Paladins of helm ARE archetypical anyways... A paladin of Sune would inspire me better, but it's just me... Vigilante just fits the inquisitor character. Justiciar and BloodHound are other that could fit... and straight paladin can too, but if you're not the mounted one, you probably want to have something more accurate to your character than this mount of doom that has nothing to do with him... or just you don't like it and it keeps poping out of thin air when you appear to need it... Let another character ride it cause you don't trust what comes out from nowhere and most certainly spies on you... You'd better give us an idea of what you want him to do to "fight evil" (yeah paladins do that actually) so we can help you better Arikas |
| Arikas10-19-05, 07:02 PM | well the campaign so far is essentially Thay is trying to expand their boarders and take over Thesk. The adventuerers meet up in a town of Thesk where me and my team of other Helmites (yay leadership) are in a tavern discussing battle plans and defensive strategies. So essentially protect the innocent ideal. Diplomatic is always first choice, but in a situation like this when it will be against red wizards and warriors from thay, chances are diplomacy wont work, so it will come down to some large fights. |
| Llochlyn10-19-05, 07:49 PM | Leadership ? Large Fights ? Diplomacy ? Screams Marshall ! |
