"Oh, you don't believe in Pelor? Well Pelor doesn't believe in you! No Paladin powers for you!" At least have him believe in the forces of Good and Law. He's friends with the church of Pelor? Hasn't anyone tried to convert him? And the town people hate Paladins and Clerics, aka healers? Are the townspeople evil? No offense, but that's not too bright of the town. "Jimmy, you're hurt! let's get you to the cleric." "No way, I'm not going to those @%&(*! I'm fine, hand me that spleen." Motive: He wants out of this crap town! He's a hero, he doesn't want to stick around in the middle of nowhere. Plus he has a poor family to support, so you can make him a little greedy. Not for himself, he justs wants to send money home to his poor family. Or make him extremely fugel... fugal... cheap. Won't get rid of a tent even after it has a hole blasted in it, says the 9/10ths melted candle is "still good" etc. As for ways to make him different, the fear of ghosts is good. Since he's melee focused, maybe he considers range weapons dishonorable/unsporting/etc. Or he just too cheap to buy arrows :D Make him alcoholic/ drug addict. He hates animals. Has a lovely singing voice. Won't eat fish. Or maybe pig. Focuses more on what's good than what's lawful, or vice versa |
| VedicDragon12-14-05, 11:01 AM | There used to be "Ethos" Paladins . . . Paladins who didn't necessarily worship a deity per say, just held sacred their oaths, their Code (chivalry or what have you) and the virtues Temperance, Mercy, Humility & Charity (or what have you). I think that's what you're going for, right? Did you mean atheistic or agnostic? Two WILDLY different views, those. The latter would allow your paladin to give a "Head nod" at the other powers-that-be and go "Oh yeah, they're ok I guess. Not my personal choice, but nothing wrong with them for it!" and keep on trucking on his mission. Just my 2 coppers worth. |
| Twilly12-14-05, 03:02 PM | Searos Damen Your parents were Clerics of Pelor. They ran a small temple. An evil wizard in town started accusing the church of being corrupt. He ran schemes too discredit the church of Pelor and tried to convert the citizens to a made up new god. He dominated, charmed and/or bribed many people. Eventually most citizens thought that your parents were indeed corrupt. Your parents got killed during an attack on the church. You slipped out of town together with your brothers and sisters. You fled to a large city (maybe the captital city). There your sisters and brother do the jobs you described in your own post. Now that they are save you decided to go out and find the wizard that was responsible for your parent's deaths. You lost faith in Pelor, because he couldn't/didn't save your parents. I guess you have to insert the ghost-story yourself. Maybe that story happened in the city you fled to. Maybe there is where you picked up your fighting skills too. |
| Zach-a-tack12-14-05, 04:58 PM | Thanks for all your help. my character is an atheist I like the idea of the wizard making up a new god and making the people belive the Pelor temple is corrupt. He is a vegatarian and gives money to his family when he can. He is cheap , because of his poor lifestyle. He's calm , and dosn't force his beliefs on people unless they hurt the other non evil people and then he kills them. he is addicted to devil weed So here it is Searos My parents were poor Clerics of pelor in the town of Lodi. They were well liked till a dark necromancer came into town , he created a new god called Greant , God of Helping. He bribed the officals of the town , and made a group of enforcer/thieves to force people to worship his god. Soon people believed in this god by their own free will , and consitiered the necromancer to be their savior. My parents made a small community ,at the far end of the town ,of the people who still believed in Pelor. We were treated as slaves , and worse by the people who worshiped this new god. We didn't have the money to leave , so we stayed. I started rallying people against the necromancer , so he killed my best friend Stevens and made him into a ghost. The necromancer sent him througth our little Pelor community. My own hand had to destory the ghost. I haven't went near a graveyard since. I decided I must find a new way to destory this necromancer , so I left the town hoping to rally people to my cause. I cursed all the gods for there lack of help. I has been roaming the lands eversince, trying to find supporters. I give money to my parents when I can. who will help me. Will you? |
| Fox Lee12-15-05, 03:02 AM | Oi, there's nothing wrong with an atheist paladin - indeed, I'm of the opinion that a person who believes in ideals, rather than in a deity, is more able to good deeds without bias, since Gods inevitably bring their own petty baggage to the table. My favourite paladin* was a ferociously good-aligned woman, to the point of being exalted and having Vow of Poverty, whose general stance was "acts of gods be damned, these are the times of mortals". I say, more power to you, sir! Being scared of ghosts seems odd, though, since Paladins become immune to fear in mechanical terms. Though, it could be very cool to emphasise the fact that he does indeed feel the fear, but has the willpower to ignore it. Yeah, I like that ^_^ *Or the equivalent in our campaign world, which is less mount-oriented and works on domains, like the Cleric. |
