| ElivativeDeviant01-05-05, 11:34 AM | this is just an idea for a char. right now i do not have the opertunity to play a game. so is all i got is the internet. well any heres the idea a human paladin with the memmolith template added. the memmolith template came from dungeon magizine in december heres what it does the person with a memmolith hears voices in their head. he/she is surrounded by incorrperal spirits that sometimes at random make them selves visable. at random they may open doors, throw in animate objects, and make goast sounds. at any time the paladin can make a will check to stop these sounds. and he can make a will check to contol them. at will the pladin can cast goast sounds. anytime the paladin attempts a diplomacy, sense motive, bluff, or anything simmilar he must perform a concentration check. the voices in his head distract him. (attention deficit disorder. lol) the char gets +4cha also i thought the vow of poverty wouldn't be bad for this char. alignment lawful good. the memmolith does not change alignment nor try to. for a story i got this. his parents were murdered as a small child. he remembered that day and vowed some sort of revenge. he was than orphaned and was brought up in the church as a holy warrior. well he got his revenge and thats how he got the memmolith. the spirits of his parents killers follow him around tourmenting him for their death. the paladin belives that its a curse from his god. i though maybe a vow of non-violence here, and droping the vow of poverty, but i don't know. i would like to keep the memmolith i like the idea of a paladin w/ a.d.d. for feats i thought wep focus(comp long bow) rapid shot, multishot, Retribution(i think this one works with the bow) i wanna try something differant with the paladin. not the sword and sheild type. if that does'nt seem viable than i'd go with the biggest badest 2 hannded hammer i can find. use power atk, cleave, great cleave, and Retribution, wep focus (hammer) i'm not allowed magical items so i'd have to rely on str for damage and atk bonus. thats it for now |
| aleshandre01-05-05, 12:09 PM | As a Paladin, a vow of non-violence would negate his usefullness, since Paladins are by definition holy warriors and a vow of non-violence would take the warrior out of the holy warrior. |
| Callista01-05-05, 07:02 PM | No, no... Paladins are "holy warriors"; but that only means they fight. It doesn't mean they have to *kill*--and that's what Vow of Nonviolence is. You do subdual damage, and take people down without killing them. You capture, bring to justice, perhaps even try to reform, the evil. I can easily see a paladin taking Vow of Nonviolence; someone who has been trained as a "holy warrior", and who is wholly devoted to Good, will have good reasons for such a decision. Maybe he hates the finality of killing someone: Barring powerful magic, once you kill an evil creature, the chances for its redemption are pretty close to nil. Maybe he doesn't trust himself (he is a fallible mortal, after all) to mete out judgment properly, especially in the heat of battle. Maybe he has simply seen so much of killing and bloodshed that he stays as far away from it as possible. I can see Vow of Nonviolence... I can see it very well. |
| ElivativeDeviant01-06-05, 04:18 AM | i can see that being a problem with the memmolith. making him harder to play i'd have to have a lot into concentrate just to preform stuff like dipolomacy or other such things |
| aleshandre01-07-05, 09:27 AM | You have a strange definition of non-violent. Where I come from violence isn't just killing it means: Main Entry: vi·o·lence Function: noun 1 a : exertion of physical force so as to injure or abuse (as in effecting illegal entry into a house) b : an instance of violent treatment or procedure 2 : injury by or as if by distortion, infringement, or profanation : OUTRAGE 3 a : intense, turbulent, or furious and often destructive action or force <the violence of the storm> b : vehement feeling or expression : FERVOR; also : an instance of such action or feeling c : a clashing or jarring quality : DISCORDANCE Which means that any fighting at all would be violent, thus a non-violent paladin would have no means of fulfilling his/her vow as a holy warrior. nonviolent has for synomyms - pacifistic, peacable and peaceful. None of those words allows for fighting of any kind, including fighting to subdue instead of kill. I stand by my point that a paladin is rendered useless with a vow of non-violence. A cleric could do so, but a paladin could not. On the other hand, a vow to AVOID violence where possible would still be in keeping with the nature of a paladin. |
| Persephone Imytholin01-07-05, 10:32 AM | Let's see... A 20th level paladin smells like good, detects evil, gets better saves, heals people, doesn't get scared, doesn't get sick, has an OMG Speshul mount, casts spells and cures diseases. Contrast this with whapping evildoers a shade harder, swinging a sword pretty decently and plating on armour. I'd say paladins don't have to be warriors, especially since their CoC only requires that they punish those who harm or threaten innocents. This doesn't necessarily mean beating them bloody. The UA variant paladins tend to be designed along similar lines, except the one summarised which gives up non-violent abilities for favoured enemies. Plus, in a story-focused game (oooh... narrativism), a less violent or nonviolent paladin is going to add an interesting flavour - meaning everyone gets to have fun. |

I'm going by the BoED Vow here, not the dictionary definition. |
| aleshandre01-07-05, 01:58 PM | I don't have and won't purchase the BoVD, so I don't know what that vow entails. |
| Callista01-08-05, 04:25 PM | Heh. Acronym confusion here... this should be set straight since the two books are polar opposites, hm? BoED="Book of Exalted Deeds" (about extreme Good alignments, "exalted", those who might take a sacred vow, such as the type we're discussing here) BoVD="Book of Vile Darkness" (about extreme Evil alignments, a DM's resource or sourcebook for player of an extremely Evil ("vile") PC) |
| ElivativeDeviant01-11-05, 10:20 AM | well actually i'm going to go with the vow of poverty |
