ok, I recently got the races of stone, and, me usually being a wizard/finesse combat class, I wanted to try a melee class, I originally chose a goliath CG fighter, but my DM suggested a paladin, after reading up on goliaths. So I changed it to a paladin, and changed the alignment to LG. I gave the background that before he self-imposed an exile on himself (to help stem a conflict after the chieftan of the tribe died).

my paladin was an adjudicator in his former tribe, so I thought that a paladin wouldn't be a far stretch. The DM of our group doesn't like one of the character models, and has been trying to kill him off, so our (currently level 2) group has been facing off level 5 enemies, in an attempt to kill the guy. As a paladin, however, and as a goliath, my character always faces off the toughest guy in the lot, in personal conflict, to prove to himself that he did not leave his tribe out of cowardice. did I do this right?

Paladins are defenders of a certain faith / ideal. Doesn't matter what race they come from.

So, to answer your question... if by defending the party means taking on the biggest meanest fella that also furthers your cause as a paladin, then yes, it makes sense.
