Im currently playing a Gnome Artificer who is in pursuit of all of the knowledge he can get his hands on. However, he thinks he better than everyone else. So, to play on this side of his ego, i thought that a great roleplaying experience would be to have him go slightly insane. He would begin to use the party for protection only, so that he could gain knowledge unharmed, and become extremely paranoid abuot his knowledge, thinking everyone was trying to undermine his quest. Ultimatley, he would begin self mutilation to make himself "ultimate." This would be accomplished through that class in MoE (its name escapes me at this moment) that turns the character slightly Warforged. The class itself is corny, but it would fit quite well into the character's life. Any suggestions on roleplaying or prc's i could also take to gain more knoweldge and/or make myself seem insane? Also, any roleplay material is also welcomed, along with toher ideas for the destiny of my Gnome.

Well. as for prc's there's always the Alienis from CA, if that works for you. It explicitly drives the char. insane.
As for roleplaying, displaying a disturbing incomprehension for other peoples misery or agony is always good. i.e. acting completley untoched by someone dying och a familys lives beeing wrecked by monsters or somesuch, instead thinking about maybe the logistical problems this brings.
Muttering quietly whenever someone disagrees with you is always good, if a bit cliche.

hope this helps.
if I think of anything else, I'll get back to you.

Paranoia can be a problem. If unchecked, it will get to the point that the Artificer will no longer trust the party, and leave.
How about a specialised variant of Kleptomania? The Artificer unconciously feels the need to 'collect' parchments and books, to the point where he doesn't even remember picking them up. The 'Sleight Of Hand' skill (whatever it's called) would come in handy...

'Vampire:' books have good material on insanity, or possibly any of Palladium's work.
Also, there's 'Call of Cthulhu' (any version, though the D20 may fit better).

Here's (http://d20srd.org/srd/variant/campaigns/sanity.htm) a site with some rules about sanity and insanity, mainly from Unearthed Arcana.

A good quirck could be to start scheming incredible plans, talking to yourself for long minutes, and suddenly yelling NO! It can't work!.

You could have another PC taste your food before eating it, only to see if it is poisonned.

Slowly begin to suspect other PCs. If you're reading something, quickly close the book or hide the scroll whenever someone get too close.

You could have nightmares. Imagine any kind of scenario where a creature no one knows is killing you. Identify this creature as a Vegohran, something you have read somewhere.

Try to convince the (N)PC you trust the must (or any NPC if you're drunk) that highly evolve spirits are using everyone as a puppet and use dices to decide if you will live or die. Imagine that! Dices! With any number of faces! I've read somewhere they even have a dice with 20 faces!

To add to that, using decipher script you can create your own cipher. You would only need 1 rank, maybe 1/2rank im not sure, and you can create a code that you write your plans out in. It could also double as your blue prints for your inventions a la wyle E coyote.

Edit: Aslo leonardo divinci did this, he wrote everything backwards and sabotaged his own blue prints so people wouldnt steal his ideas.
