| Silrana07-14-06, 10:15 AM | This may be a bit off topic, since it deals with the whole party rather than my specific character, but we could use some suggestions. We are at the point in our campaign when we are starting to become moderately well-known, and have come to the attention of some big names. Not long ago, an NPC asked us what the name of our group was, and we were left hemming and hawwing. Throughout fiction and the sourcebooks, a number of adventuring groups are identified by a common name, the Silver Blades from an old CRPG for example. For any of you out there with group names, how did you decide on one? |
| Jedipilot2407-14-06, 12:19 PM | What has your party done that got the attention of the important NPCs? What do the various characters have in common? Is there anything 'distinctive' about the party? |
| Silrana07-14-06, 12:55 PM | Unfortunately, we don't seem to have a common element to our characters. There is no common race, gender, alignment, religion, etc. The 'biggest' thing that our party has done is dined with several notables of Silverymoon, including the High Lady herself. We came to their attention when we fought off an attack on a small town near the city. They asked us to help out with something, which sent us from one city to another until we found a task that will help everyone 'up the chain'. (Remember that episode of MASH of all the hoops they had to jump through to get tomato juice for Col. Potter? Kinda like that.) While we would love to have a name with a connection to Alustriel, we hesitate to do that without her permission. That is not a lady I would want mad at me. And we are rather far away from Silverymoon at the moment, and don't know when we will get back to ask her. Not to mention there must be a zillion Silver Something-or-others in FR already. |
| Harrow Blade07-15-06, 08:41 AM | Group names are notoriously hard to decide upon. Common elements amongst the group are usually a good start but if there is nothing you can find and agree on then perhaps something along the lines of: The Valorous Few (exchange few with the number of party members.) Fate's Edge Valor's Blades Hand's of Fate/Valor/Might/other suitable cool words I am having trouble getting past fate and Valor but you get the point. |
| R2-DS07-15-06, 12:53 PM | Hmmm.......I once played in a group that adventured in the same region that you're in. Mostly Western Heartlands and the Dales. Seeing as that region of Faerun seems to be most tollerant towards the idea of multiculturalism. That and we were of course a multicultural party (who isnt really?). Any way having decided that this would be our home we took on the name "Dale Wardens". We too were much like your group with no common ground. But once we made our decision to put down roots in that region the name choice became easy. Dale Wardens was a good choice for notoriety purposes. Not only for us but for the common folk of the region too. The party of Elf A and Human B along with Halfling C and Dwarf D would hardly be remembered, but the Dale Wardens was a term that all commoners could use to describe their protectors. |
| geekling07-16-06, 07:44 AM | Our group at first they were simply 'Yrin Giddywinkle & co' a bunch of nobodies. Yrin served as the face for the party and when she talked to innkeepers and guards, she just gave her own name for simplicity, and well because the Giddywinkle-name is a respectable one. Which can not be said about some of her companions back then. So mostly they weren't even mentioned by name, just dismissed as hired guards, not to bring attention to them. Then time went on and our party did things to note even by the general public it seems. In particular they dealt with a situation in the ruins of the black lantern castle. So after a while, NPCs started to talk about us as the 'black lanterns'. It was not a name we chose, but well... it stuck. By now there's only one PC left of the ones that actaully were involved in the black lantern business, but the group is still the black lanterns. |
| Fithero07-16-06, 08:02 AM | I find that you really cannot choose a name yourself, these titles should be given to you, as are nicknames. As much as it pains me to bring this up, i once had an sun elf enchanter called Olmas "The occasional" because of the fact that he would constantly get knocked unconscious during a battle. Also, ive a wild elf dancer who has been dubbed "Master of disaster" and "lord of the dance", two titles that he has earned. Ill agree with geekling and his "black lantern" name, i recon that you should let others decide apon a name thats fitting. Or atleast come up with one spontaneously (spelling?) and not sit around for weeks deciding. Later |
| geekling07-16-06, 08:39 AM | Just for fun, I had a dig through my logs and as luck would have it found the first mention of the group as the 'black lanterns'. Might be fun to share. Hador pulls aside a message runner, a young boy (one who looks particulary down on his luck if poss) (runner) "yes sir, you need a message delivered?" Hador: "I have an urgent message that needs delivering this night to the Windimere estate... are you up to the task?" (runner) Of course Hador digs out a shiney gold coin and holds it up to the boy. "Good... Well... I would have you take them a message that a company from Brindenford has grievous news of sir Johnathan and would seek an audience with them tomorrow morning!" (runner) "yes sir at once...and your name?" Hador: "Tell them that Johnathan is in good hands and yet lives!" Hador looks to the others "Tell them to expect.... Yrin Giddywinkle and company!" (runner) "Yrin Giddywinkle and company...the Black Lanterns?" His eyes widen in surprise Hador looks to the others "Black lanterns?" Hugo shrugs Yrin: "And there's an extra gold in there if you don't mention this to anyone but the ones you're ment to deliver the message to" Hador presses the coin into the boy's hands and holds it there for a moment "Aye as the gnome says!" (runner) "I'll let them know at once...and only them!" (runner) leaves... Yrin: "The black lanterns, eh?" Yrin: "One day we might even get famous." Hador: "I sincerly hope not" Yrin: "Oh come now, handsome... don't be like that. Once all this have settled down, of course." (stuff happens, later that evening the messenger boy returns) The messenger boy slips up the stairs and runs Yrin's door pounding rapidly Yrin: "What! Come in." (runner) Miss Giddywinkle...Miss Giddywinkle ** Yrin sits up on the bed and wraps herself in a blanket ** Yrin: "That's me, where's the fire." (runner) enters... (runner) "I told Windimeres and they said they will be at the catheral in the morning." Yrin: "Good." (runner) "I just wanted to get back and make sure you have the message." Yrin: "Thank you, I appreciate it." (runner) "Is it true that you were able steal the scales off a dragon?" Yrin laughs Yrin: "No, not quite. It was the eyes, not the scales." Yrin: "And it was just a very small one." (runner) "the eyes....thats even better....I'm going to tell me friends..." he runs out the door in his excitement Yrin chuckles (runner) "Bye black lanterns, he waves as he passes Hador, Hugo and corryn" Hugo watches the boy go. "What was that all about?" Corryn looks nonplussed, "Ah... Fame." Corryn: "Or, at least, fame by assotiation." |
| Stormbrand07-16-06, 02:20 PM | So we can't use silver. Well SilveryMOON could have an alternative focus. Moonguard/Moon Guardians. The High Light's Vanguard. The Shields of the Moon. Shields of the High City (find a pseudonymn for Silverymoon). Beyond that, well, you will have to tell us what you do have. Even if varied. Is there a leader? Is there are primary element or most distinctive factor? What stands out about the group and from the group? Another name is the Triumphant Blades, but that is tempting fate. :D |
| the_taken07-16-06, 03:16 PM | Or how about. "Mercenaries for hire. Cheap." |
| Targorn07-16-06, 11:37 PM | Dunno if it helps but one of our groups names was "The Band" (Banned) no spellcasters in it all thieves and fighters and a tendency for disasters to follow (wizards fireballing us in town market esp, several tragic inn fires...) us around. WE never spelt it out to anyone so it became a bit of a joke among our group. |
| Devlonir07-18-06, 03:45 PM | Well.. me party once had the same problem too. An Eberron campaign where they suddenly came into the attention of the media. They needed a name quick so asked the reporter to wait and they made a deal. They were going to name their group after the first creature they are gonna kill and the name of the party member with the killing blow.. It came out as Francis' Wolves or something.. i can't remember anymore, cause after that interview they changed their name to the Khorvaire's Dragons. But it might be an idea for your group. |
| Silrana07-19-06, 07:42 AM | Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. The one about the NPCs sort of picking the name for you was good. In our case the DM would have to pick a good one, because his wife is one of the players and she'd thwack him if he picked a bad one. ;) But we are still feeling our way around to come up with some general idea of what we would like to be called. Someone upthread asked for more detail about the group. The person who tends to speak for the group is a cleric/wizard (heavy on the wizard) of Mystra. She is the calm, diplomatic sort. She left Waterdeep to avoid the boredom of her wealthy family's endless rounds of parties and social calls. Others in the group are a ranger of Mielikki who, contrary to the stereotype, is sometimes too chatty for his own good. He eventually wants to find his long lost Uthgardt kin. There is a half-elf rogue who follows Hanali Celanil and is determined to find her true love even if she has to go through every male in Faerun to find it. One is a monk/sorcerer Lathanderite who seems to alternate between great caution and acts of extreme bravery. He is slowly getting used to life outside the monastery where he was raised. We have a half-elf fighter who is a semi-lapsed Tymoran. The rogue has been trying to convince him that one of the Seldarine would be a better choice, but he was raised among humans so he's not sure. He is friendly and fairly modest for his skills. Our newest party member is an elven priest of Solonor Thelandira. He is fairly quiet, so we don't know a lot about him yet, but we do know he was recently in Evereska, and he has hinted at a rowdy past. |
| Timothythefighter07-19-06, 08:58 AM | I've been through whole games not knowing what my character name is and not knowing anyone in the party's name. Honestly who cares! |
| Timothythefighter07-19-06, 09:01 AM | all this character development is bull, break out the min maxing and have a real game. Mother fuzzers |
| Silrana07-19-06, 09:43 AM | Wow, I'm honored. You registered today just to troll my thread. Everyone, a round of applause for the troll! *golf claps* Tim, you might have noticed that this is the character development forum. I invite you to head for the character optimization forum, where you can min/max to your heart's content. |
| Piggyfreak607-19-06, 09:05 PM | Nobody in my group is in tune with nature. We have a rouge from a big city, a barbarian who lived in a place like the african bush, a bookish wizard and a monk who slaughtered his monistary. They hate all that nature has to offer, and they really hate fey. So they named themselves the feybashers and even came up with a logo. |

Silrana, I'm well impressed. Seriously, I have to say I admire you for that. Normally I come across a troll and use fire and acid. Maybe we call them trolls because they are the most suitable creatures to flame :D . There is a half-elf rogue who follows Hanali Celanil and is determined to find her true love even if she has to go through every male in Faerun to find it. I'd like to meet this woman. The sheer variety of your group could be a theme to name the group after. "The Many Paths" or something like that. By the looks of your party that must be a really fun game. There is a lot of personality to all of you. Which one are you by the way? |

Normally I come across a troll and use fire and acid. Maybe we call them trolls because they are the most suitable creatures to flame :D . *chuckles* I've been on the internet a very long time (hint: If you didn't use the Mother Gopher, you haven't been on it as long as I have.) In those years, I've learned that most trolls love the attention of fire and acid, because then they have an excuse to dump more abuse on you. Cheerful disdain seems to baffle them completely. I'd like to meet this woman. You just have. Sort of. The sheer variety of your group could be a theme to name the group after. "The Many Paths" or something like that. That's not a bad idea. I'll add it to the list of suggestions for when we discuss it next. By the looks of your party that must be a really fun game. There is a lot of personality to all of you. Which one are you by the way? We do have a lot of fun. We play through chat, and are all friends from a fanfic board. With a game full of writers, things get pretty creative. We enjoy truly creating characters that each have their own personalities, and aren't just versions of ourselves. There are only three of us playing, and we each play two characters. Each character has its own chat handle, so things go pretty smoothly. I play the rogue and the ranger. The DM's wife plays the Mystran and the elven cleric, and our third player plays the monk/sorcerer and the fighter. |
| TeediousPrime07-20-06, 02:02 PM | The sheer variety of your group could be a theme to name the group after. "The Many Paths" or something like that. Or perhaps "The Crossroads." That way if you can get the Lady's permission down the line, you could change it to "Alustriel's Crossroads." Oh and excellent Trollslaying display back there. *applauds* |
| club2bash07-20-06, 05:29 PM | all this character development is bull, break out the min maxing and have a real game. Mother fuzzers mother fuzzers... yeah... well, good luck with that. perhaps the name doesn't have to do with the party at all. (random color) (some sort of gem) white (or black) fire it's not as creative, buts its a hell lot easier. |
| Stormbrand07-21-06, 09:32 PM | *chuckles* I've been on the internet a very long time (hint: If you didn't use the Mother Gopher, you haven't been on it as long as I have.) In those years, I've learned that most trolls love the attention of fire and acid, because then they have an excuse to dump more abuse on you. Cheerful disdain seems to baffle them completely. Agreed. Thankfully I have yet to give a troll the victory of managing to provoke me. I will remember that come back for years to come. Anyway, who else in your group is thinking of a party name? One thought was that you could debate the matter in character and end up with each character having their own opinion on the subject. So the rogue could try 'Wandering Hearts', the Lathanderite monk could suggest 'Light of Hope' or 'Hope's Harbingers' or something similar. |
| Tramp4life07-21-06, 10:01 PM | We had the Suicide Squad Euthenasia (sp?--we were there to help the suicide squad!), We had a party where everyone was over 15 Cha and called ourselves Looks 2 Kill We had a party called simply, "the Company." We had Killers Inc We had the Shovels of Glendon (long story) Pick something that made you famous, or makes you unique. If you have a party of rogues, call yourselves Rogue Warriors or Silent but Deadly (you have to smell like sulphur though)... |
| Deadlion07-23-06, 08:34 AM | Call yourselves after something heroic you've done. For example, if your party held off an Orc tribe for ten days at the Bridge of Aelwathern, you would be the Guardians of Aelwathern. Or if you played an instrumental role in winning the Battle of Skannen Mahj, you would be the Heroes of Skannen Mahj. Failing that, persuade everyone in the party to wear at least some of a certain colour, and call yourselves the [insert colour here] Company. |
| Puskara07-23-06, 10:20 AM | Well you mentioned that the most notable thing the party has done as a team is to eat with famous people. This coudl be something of a theme for the party. How about Champions of Degustation? degustation: To savor a rich or excellent flavor. Your goal coudl be to fight evil wherever it hides, and get free food in exchange! Puskara |
| boa8407-27-06, 06:49 PM | Use acronyms...I remember an old one my group used in a higher level campaign. H.O.P + E Humans of Power & Elves We were all humans (6 pcs) except we had (2) elves, plus HOPE sounds better then HOP. :bounce: |
