| Epicuris07-03-03, 08:07 PM | I'm getting tired of the robed bookworms of wizards I constantly see in my gaming groups. Let's here some of your variants on the wizard. All wizards need to study to gain their power, but was yours a people person, an artist, or some other a-typical aspect of a wizard? |
| Wizard07-04-03, 01:29 AM | You've probably heard of this, but the wizard from "Addicted to Fireball" on the old What's a Player to Do? board. This guy was the man. He did a great job of roleplaying the neutral-to-evil transition. Good stuff. |
| The One and Only...07-04-03, 01:54 PM | A party wizard? I'd just go with sorceror. |
| Lord of the Ninth07-04-03, 04:18 PM | My current character is a wizard, a grey elf (yes, I know I've become everything I hate, but it least it isn't from FR), this means that while he does read alot, he mostly does it when others are sleeping. He's also a chronomancer, so with all the chronomancy spells (and a few others, like greater magic weapon and tensor's transformation), Xiles is a regular fighting machine (with a quarterstaff, Tenser's transformation and haste he has more attacks then the monk). So I have a bit of an unusual combat wizard, he also cliams to practice a form of martial art known as "Deja Fu" (yeah, Terry Pratchet is a genius), which largely consists of hitting people a lot and then casting Deja Vu every time I (or someone else) crits (deja vu makes the baddy take all the damage he took last round over again, it's level 7). As to the grey beard and robes, Xiles still looks like an elf in his 150s (despite being 307, thank you chronomancy). He does wear a robe, but only because it's the best magical itme he has (killed a lich for it). Xiles also has a level of duelist (sounds munchy but fit's his character), and he worships Odin (as a god of war and magic). For more stuff on this guy check out the thread "Fleshing out a Chronomancer" it's on this board. So you want a wizard isn't your average Gandalf clone? (Gandalf was cool, but almost none of us can roleplay it as good as Ian McKellen). I remember when my DM was playing, he ran at least three Gandalf clones, complete with beard and cart (heck his first character was called gandalf, but that was years ago). So first, find your guy a quirk, like I'm a chronomancer, you could be a demonologist. Combat wizards are also fun (and they should work even better when 3.5 comes out). You also have your crazy fireball made types (often evokers, or sorcerers). I personally think the most fun comes from when a wizard either uses magic lightly or creatively. Like when our wizard polymorphed a ghoul (or somehting like that) into a chicken, and then my character shot it with an arrow and we cooked it for supper (when the DM said I impaled the chicken with the arrow, my char said "it is a sign from the gods, it must be cooked rotisery style). Also fun are having characters create their own signature spell (had a very bizarre hit man wizard who made a spell called "Internal manifestation" which summoned a bunch of metal inside the targets body, sorta like an extra skeleton, ouch). Also if you happen to use a lot of magic from a particular spell chain or similar group of magic (the hit man wizard also used a lot of the Rune spells from Relics and Rituals). Hope this helps |
| Trydan07-29-03, 07:18 AM | How about a wizard who'd rather be a sorcerer. Unfortunately, he just doesn't have the talent though... and he has to study. However, he's really upset about this - he'd rather be a "natural". So his spell book is tiny, and he has it concealed in a pocket. He goes for the sorcerer outfits, carries a short-spear, and has strange arcaic symbols tattooed on his skin. However, at night, he makes out that he suffers from some affliction due to his dragon blood, and so locks himself away in his room/tent/cave where he cram-learns spells ready for the next day. |
