| psilontech02-08-07, 01:42 PM | In a recent campaign, my changeling rogue4/Dread Necromancer1 (The dread necromancer level was needed for something, I know it isn't exactly 'optimized' ;)) and group faced a vampire, which was, in short, insanely awesome. At one point he had used dominate person to 'convince' her that she was a vampire as well (she barely scraped by the will save and bluffed her way through, him thinking she was dominated) and she thought that to be incredibly cool. This being an evil campaign, and her being fairly power hungry, I am thinking about somehow attempting to have her turn into a vampire (None of that vampire spawn bs either). So, the first problem would be maintaining free will once she had been turned. I was thinking some sort of bargain once she had found an acceptable 'master' in which she would negotiate for freedom once she had risen. Something like a large lump-sum 'donation' with small tributes for a while after. As well as a "Get out of us killing you free" Card. Or something like that, any suggestions? The second problem would be limitations posed by being a vampire. Being a changeling, hiding my vampirism wouldn't be much of a problem (I mean, I have a +32 discise (sp?) check!(yay magic items)). The lack of ability to enter certain buildings without permission and crossing running water might pose a small hinderance, but shouldn't be too much of a problem, should it? But the main problem I need to find a solution to is not being able to go outside during the day. Now, the rules aren't very specific on this, but does it have to be direct sunlight that harms the vampire, or can it be outside during the day in the shade of a structure? I'm thinking about obtaining some sort of magical item that could counteract the effects of the sun on my vampire (obviously attempting this before turning, as it could arise some suspicion). I'm not sure what kind of item could do this, possibly some sort of modified darkness spell cast on the item (probably a ring). I'll make up some sort of bs story about how either it's part of some form of experement or someone put some form of curse on me in which the sun hurts me or something. Any ideas on either the item needed, a lie to tell to buy or get it made, or a way of obtaining it from someone who wouldn't mind possibly helping out a vampire? Any suggestions would be appriciated! Thanks! |

| Stormbrand02-08-07, 03:52 PM | Free will, the answer is no. The new undead is under the masters unconditional control, and thus is in no position to negotiate anything. The best bet for freedom is having allies kill the master to free you, only the problem is that the master can easily use you against your allies. I think it is direct sunlight that is deadly, but the +8 ECL is the more serious concern. Avoiding sunlight entirely is your best bet. One dispel and you are in trouble. A wish spell could give you some sunlight tolerance, but be careful not to ask to much. An hour per day perhaps? Dominate Gaze is a good way for a vampire to obtain help. Why bother telling anything? |
| Doomed_Penguin02-08-07, 07:20 PM | Domination is a bad idea, it's much to obvious. I suggest roleplaying your character as very polite when s/he's a vampire. As long as you're courteous, no one will question you when you say "May I come in? I always feel a little intrusive when I'm in another's house, and would feel much better if I were properly invited.". Just because you're evil, doesn't mean you can't be polite. Also, keep in mind that it's not sunlight you're worried about, it's DIRECT sunlight. You could have a divine caster cast control weather to make it cloudy, and you'd be fine. I know that sounds questionable according to RAW, but it was even mentioned in the Ghostwalk campaign setting (there was a group of vampire clerics who took turns casting it each day on some undead continent that they ruled there). Also, you don't like running water, mirrors, or garlic (or, if you want to go for historical accuracy, any strong herbs (and if you want to be historically accurate, your skin wouldn't be pale, but a dark muddy color)). |
| Adolph_Kheebler02-09-07, 12:59 AM | There is a spell out of Races of Faerun you might be able to get your dm to let in called Shadow Canopy. It creates a 100ft radius area of shadows around the object it is cast on (in this case you). It specifies that this spell is often used by Shades to keep their powers in daytime and I see no reason why it wouldn't work with vampires. It is however a 6th level spell. |

Good luck with Strahd. A version of Shadow Canopy is also available on the DarkSun setting. It think it's only third level there. We have a vampire currently in our group. It took quite a bit of negotiation, a years worth of campaign story, and a severe curtailing of his powers to pull it off in something resembling a balanced way. I believe there is a spell called Create Greater Undead. It allows for the creation of wrights, mummys, and VAMPIRES! Forget lichdom, research a modified version to magically turn yourself. It worked for Strahd... |
