| Noctem05-27-07, 06:19 PM | I'm doing a new campaign since everybody else in our new party are complete noobs at D&D. It's the Red Hand of Doom, with five people at fourth level. We already have a Dwarf Monk, Human Cleric, Human Bard, and a Human Sorcerer. I was thinking of taking Barb 1/ Rog 4 taking advantage of rage, and fast movement. I'd wield a Great Sword of Frost and have a maxed out Bluff skill, so I could feint almost every turn for a 5d6 damage. Is this a good setup? As far as books, I'm allowed Anything with Complete in the title, ie: "Complete Warrior", books like "Song and Silence" and the like in that series, the regular players manual, and DM Guide, along with Psionics. Races I can be anything that has Adjustment +3 or less. Ideas? I could go magic, or melee, since our party is fairly balenced in those areas. I also want to go for a tragic hero: I didn't mention alignment, but it HAS to be Good or Neutral. My DM is fairly lax on my actions though. |
| Gingerbread Guy05-27-07, 09:49 PM | Sounds like this belongs in the Character Optimization board (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=339). ^__^ Good luck! ~Ginger |

If so give us some idea what sort of tragedy your looking for (please don't say my parents/master were killed) and as to how your character would have responded. |

A tragic hero isnt one with tragedy in their past, though they very well might, its not where the name is from. A tragic hero is one with a flaw in his character that inevitably leads to his downfall. Ie: A rogues greed gets him killed when he tries to steal to much from a dragon and gets flamed to death. A wizard who believes he is so powerful that he doesnt need to fear anyone. Some kobold servant slits his throat in his sleep. Its easiest to go with the whole "7 deadly sins" for the 'tragic' aspect, just have him have one to the extremes and there you go. Peace |

Peace 100% correct about not needing a tragedy in the past of course but I was just asking to avoid the #1 most cliched answer. I do of course know many other ways to be tragic but there are a few too many for me to guess at what Noctem wants. |
| Fithero05-28-07, 02:40 AM | Ah, touche'. My bad ;) If you want, why not be a hexblade? That class just screams tragic hero. Going round cursing people, all dark and moody like... great set up. AND Its melee and magic, so both your bases are covered :P Peace |
| Noctem05-28-07, 11:36 AM | Well, to fit in with the campaign... He (Name not given yet), was a commander in the kingdoms army, fairly well known, and was also known as a good fellow, always helping out people, good sense of humor, well spirited etc. I'm not sure if this would go under the parents killed catagory, since she is a loved one but, beyond the first adventure there is an evil lich, who is under control of the hobgoblin warband mentioned in the adventure we are playing. He is using the main bad guy in that adventure like a puppet. During one of the town massacres, when the PCs and their men arrived, it was to late to save the people. He ran to his house in search of his love, I'll name her Sally for this purpose. He goes to find her in a locked gaze with the lich, who then kisses her and sucks out her soul (Cliche, I know). He goes into a fury and rage and tried to attack the lich, only to be blown back from his power. Later he finds out from a higher level wizard friend who the lich is, and that he is manifesting souls for some mysterious reason unknown to us (DM won't tell), but if the PCs are able to slay the lich before it is to late, his love will be returned to him. Yeah I know it's fairly cliche but my DM pitched it to me, and I agreed to it. He likes the epic feeling to every campaign he does. So yeah. He wants his love back, but being in presence with the lich has given him a taint. To rid himself of that and get Sally back, he must go to the ends of the world to get her, you know, epic. So yeah. As I said earlier we have a monk, cleric, bard, and a sorcerer. I have no idea where to go with this, but I like the idea a melee fighter who really kicks butt... but is unique? Thanks alot guys... Edit: I was thinking A Barb 1, Rogue 14, Avenged Executioner 5... |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose05-31-07, 01:33 AM | I didn't mention alignment, but it HAS to be Good or Neutral. Edit: I was thinking A Barb 1, Rogue 14, Avenged Executioner 5... Can Avenging Executioner be good? I believe its Heros of Horror and requires at least a moderate taint score. As far as tragedy goes I have to say "I called it didn't I Fitherto?". Yeah, having a lich kill any significant other is cliched but I can try to work with it. Avenging Executioner is more or less by default a tragic class. To keep from going too cliche I suggest you focus more on the losses he takes trying to reclaim "Sally's" soul than on the loss of her herself. Try to show his losing old friends, giving up his rank and rights as commander, and leaving his home on a desperate quest. He views this all as acceptable loss. He once sought peace over war in a Sun Tzu like manner but now he kills what gets in his way. He doesn't care about a trail of corpses if his goal is at the end. For a real tragedy make sure he is so little like is former open and loving self that his love can not recognize or accept him when he does recover her. See if the DM will let you get her back early and then when she won't take you in you corrupted form you blame the villian and continue adventuring in pursuit not of what was lost but purely for revenge. |
| Fithero05-31-07, 02:06 AM | "I called it didn't I Fitherto?". Yes, yes you did. Also, it's 'Fithero'. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll get it next time. :D Can Avenging Executioner be good? I believe its Heros of Horror and requires at least a moderate taint score. The Avenging Executioner is from Complete Scoundrel, you must be thinking of the Corrupt Avenger. It requires no taint but it does require you to be non-good and to have been tragically wronged at some point in the past. :) Do I feel a contest approaching? :P Peace |

You have wounded my argument with a palpable hit.:D Now will you take the cash or the mystery prize? 1::twocents: 2::gift: |
| Daxen05-31-07, 05:52 PM | If you really want to take advantage of fast movement in a Barb Rogue I would look into Catfolk as a Race. They are LA +1 and found in Races of the Wild They are really fast, have a Natural armor bonus, Racial Bonuses to useful skills a +4 to Dex and a +2 Cha, not to mention a nifty Catfolk only feat called Catfolk Pounce. Not sure if it is what you are looking for but it seems to fit your mechanical neexds almost too well. Besides being an upright walking Black Panther Barbarian/Rogue or better yet Barbarian Scout is just RP gold. "I am death come for you". Indeed. Too bad you are not allowed ToB because this guy begs for Shadow Hand and Tiger Claw stuff. Hope it works out for you. Dax |
