Personality and Cultural Traits of the Drow [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-30-05, 10:23 AM I'm working on an idea for an all-drow game, somewhat similar to the War of the Spider Queen novels. I am drawing heavilly from Salvatore's work for my cultural knowledge, but do not have time to reread them so I am going from memory. Feel free to correct me.

One of my players is not familiar with drow and another has heard a lot about them but has never read any of the novels or RPG sourcebooks that details them so I'm working on a list and description to help them get into the feel of playing a drow and am looking for comments and suggestions.

The majority of Drow:
are ambitious. Drow want nothing more than to gain as much power as they possibly can.
are Evil or Chaotic, the priestesses seem to be both.
enjoy torture & murder.
Will not do something that has risk without clearly weighing the consequences and benefits. Even if the benefits outweigh the consequences, they often will not act unless they are sure they have a major advantage and can get away with it without getting caught.
do not have friends as we know them. In drow society a "friend" is someone you trust enough to turn your back on while in the middle of a fight.
worship Lloth, the Spider Queen. All the drow in Menzoberranzan (where the game begins) worship her to some extent or another.
spend their entire life in the Underdark without ever seeing the sunlight.

If one of the sourcebooks has a truly great description of drow society in just a few pages of reading that would save me a lot of trouble. Can someone point that out to me? If not I will continue working and post my little essay that I would have my players read to get them into the correct frame of mind.
