I'm playing an ambush drake(MMIII, basically for the dragon hit dice with no LA, according to the savage progression), with savage progression as here:

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fc/20060728a

The story is that my pack was destroyed by a vengeful red dragon after it stole something from the dragon's nest. Was then found by a thorn paladin(thus conveniently letting me get Nymph's Kiss, I think), who raised me up to a juvenile. The red dragon comes back, tries to get me and the thorn and the rest of the pack's stuff, only I appease it with all of my stuff, and renounce money ever after, as a prelude to stuff like this. Thus setting me up for VoP cheese with a flight speed. We start at level 6, therefore I will not have a breath attack, according to the progression; after I finish it, I plan to go into paladin like the thorn and then Vassal of Bahamut(BoED), making the platinum armor(barding) with the scales of aforementioned red dragon. Any salient problems?

Good basic outline of the story.

I'd add in a more specific what they stole, a bit on the personality of the paladin, and the circumstances of your rescue. I would give at least a paragraph to creating the relationship between you and the paladin as it raised you. Tell me a bit more about the paladin's story and I'll see if I can't help more specifically.

You're playing a traditionally evil race so I dunno about going through exalted feats and your reason for taking the vow seems counter to its intent. Not to mention I dunno how well it stacks will your prestige class which if I remember right gives you treasure. Even your armor from that class won't work with your vow.

How do you feel about Bahamut calling you as a paladin? It can get a bit cliched but the god's calling is a powerful trope in storytelling.

Hmm.

The thorn is one of the servitors of a massively-advanced fairy dragon(I believe is in the Draconominicon), who is a servitor of Bahamut. Hence, a good fey. Also provides a reason for the drake's religion: was taught it by its 'Brood Mother'. As a worshipper of a draconic god, riches were exalted, and the thorn was actually hunting for the pack's stuff. That didn't get mentioned to the drake, and therefore he places much less value in money, since it gave him so many grievances. Frankly, about VoB powers— maybe I'll go Sacred Watcher of Bahamut at level 15 with a full BAB class. That works, doesn't it? Or, worship a minor draconic god: given that I'll be going Paladin of Freedom, maybe Hlal. That would also provide a good reason for adventuring, besides that "not welcome anywhere" bit.

Now, the Draconominicon also says that hoards provide status amongst dragons. Therefore, I might extrapolate the idea to sharing the hoard of Bahamut or Hlal. . . which ties into Vassal of Bahamut, too. The nature of the VoP gives me an idea: Bahamut-granted soulmelds equal to the worth of the treasure that I would otherwise have gotten. This makes me think of Soulborn, the base class in MoI, and that ties in well with CG or LG. Better than the Paladins, actually.

I don't actually think that ambush drakes should be NG, and neither does my DM. They have an animalistic mentality and the -4 to int to show for it.

generally speaking I tend to think animalistic lends itself away from lawful with a slight bent towards nuetral on the good/evil axis.

LG indicates a rigid code defining how you do good. NG/CG would indicate doing good wherever it seems possible; a far more animal reaction to such abstracts as good and evil. CG would certainly seem to be the way to go with the character your dealing with. No real understanding or patience for long term planning or structured codes but a strong desire to do good thanks to your teacher and in service to your diety.

I really don't care for exalted deeds and don't know it too well. I won't, therefore, argue it too much except to say that dragons love hoarding and a Vow of Poverty would require a very exalted status for one to take it. I don't really care how much trouble it causes you; you're a dragon a the desire for a hoard runs through your blood like the need for a dwarf to build... you can avoid, you can claim not to feel it, but you'll never escape it.

If your going through incarnate you'll need some way to explain your connection to that soul-energy. I would start my story more with trying to connect to my lost pack than with a rescue by a fey paladin for this kind of story. Perhaps straining to reach through that telepathic ability you somehow reach through the barriers of time and even existance and contact them on a level you hadn't previously suspected even existed. Unfortunately this works best if you take a level in your MoI class before the game starts but maybe the DM would allow one before you complete your save species progression.
