I've been asked to join in on a weekly game and i decided to play a wizard, since the group is already big enough to have one of every base class already covered. but then i found out the dm is using the freeport material, now i'm not familar with freeport at all, but i do know that the majority of the group have some kind of pirate theme to them and that seems to be the way to go, but i'm having trouble trying to peice together a spellcasting character that will fit in with the rest of em. somehow i just don't see your typical, robe wearing, book toting wizard to be quite right this time. any suggestions?

A ship's Wizard is a valuable commodity in a fantasy world. Someone who grew up on the wharf, studying her tomes with the sea air in her nostrils, knows the perils that await sailors. Pirates, sea monsters, and adverse weather conditions are all the enemy of a sea captain, and all can be defeated by the employment of a ship's Wizard. A Wizard (or a Sorcerer or other arcane type) afflicted with wanderlust could easily talk her way aboard ship, become smitten by the adventure of it, and take up the job regularly.

Alternately, sailing or shipbuilding could be the family business. Your character, not blessed with one or more of the physical necessities of the job, found another way to contribute - with his mind.

Some short thumbnail concepts to get you started.

I had this idea a few months back, my idea was to be a water (or air) gensai, wizard who had a squid as a familiar. I forget what its called exactly... but there is this form of divination spell casting (not in d&d, its a mythical thing) that is based around looking into the eyes of fish.... or their spilled entrails. (dont want my guy killin his familiar every time he wants to cast a spell though :P)

Its kinda week atm, but it was either that or a water (or air) gensai who was focused on travelling underwater and messing with an enemies boat :P (one can breath under water... the other doesnt breath at all :P)

Anyway, the idea of a pirate wizard is pretty cool :P

1 question though, is he a good or bad pirate?

Peace

You thought you were safe, far enough inland to worry about being conscripted by the navy. However, you foolishly let your guard down when the old man, Horace Hodgeskins, began buying drinks and telling of his adventures in His Majesty's Navy. You laugh as Hodgeskins tells of the capture of the enemy treasure ship, passing out gold coins as proof of his victory. You notice it looks newly minted with your King's face on the front. "Took that back from 'em when they raided the capitol itself. Keep it. I gotz plenty."

The next morning you awoke in a cart with many familiar faces from the night before. Hodgeskins is driving the cart and you notice your hands are tied behind you. The motion of the cart, the scent of saltwater in the air and the drinks you consumed last night disagree with each other violently. You begin vommiting on yourself, not being able to turn in time. "That's enough of that," yells Hodgeskins. "That aint no way for a navy man to behave."

Confusion sets in among the others. Hodgeskins explains it plainly enough, "You took the king's coin, you accepted the contract on the back of the coin."

Holding a coin in his hand, Hodgeskins first shows one of the newly minted gold coins. On the back is inscribed: "I, the bearer of this coin do hereby agree to serve in His Majesty's Navy and be paid for my services the sum of one gold coin per month. My service will not end until dismissed by His Majesty or until I suffer a grievous wound which prevents me form serving furher or until my death."

The protesting by you and your fellow conscripts continues all the way down to the harbor. There, Bosun Hodgeskins is greeted by a naval officer who inspects the cartload of new recruits. Signing Hodgeskins' chit, the bosun walks away to collect his reward.

You and a few others from the cart are quickly pushed on board and taken below decks as the ship sets sail. Hours later the first mate hurries you all on deck to confront the captain. The captain asks if you all want to serve in the navy. A stranger in the back refuses and the captain says,"This is a navy ship with work to do. There aint no room for passengers! So, you either obey orders or you get thrown off this ship right now! Anybody still not wanting to serve?"

Life is hard and rough at sea. You travel for weeks only spotting small deserted islands or larger landmasses too far away to swim for. Finally after two months at sea, the ship is forced to resupply at Freeport. Nobody is allowed off the ship, but as it pulls away from the dock, you suddenly decide to jump for land.

Now, with only your spell book, a dagger and the gold coin that conscripted you (no other wages were paid); you are now ready to gain money and get revenge on the damnable Hodgeskins.
