Some of you may still remember my attempts to flesh out Dorian Lancaster. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=941615&highlight=Dorian+Lancaster)

I've decided to go with him being a ranger, no Tome of Battle, just simple character and simple combat. I allocated some of my starting gold towards equipment that had the "Pitspawned" template from DMGII. This template means the the equipment was forged by an Abyssal smith, so I've been wondering how Dorian would have come by:
- a pair of +1 serrated* pitspawned solarian steel elven lightblades
- a +1 reinforced* vital coverage* pitspawned spiked mithral chain shirt

And why he would carry these weapons, because though he is not good aligned, the items are evil in nature.

How he would have come by:
1. FOund in a small hoard buried under rubble. the rubble was a gate to the location of the abyssal forge. Hundred of years ago, there was a great battle as denizens of the Abyss walked through and were halted by some unknown hero who risked his life to collapse the gate. Weapons found among rubble. Dorian just found them and decided to keep them and has an intrest in finding someone powerful enough to tell him what they are.

2. Upon coming to a large ruins of a gate and altar, he saw a creature looting the rubble. THe creature was scaveging the area for treasure. Dorian snuck in and began looting at well, keeping his distance from the strange abyssal creature. Dorian found the blades first as the creature turned and saw Dorian. As the creature ran at him, dawn broke and sent the abyssal creature away. Dorian found the chain later in the rubble and set off, knowing he now had a rival and hated enemy on the abyssal plane, seeking his items back.

Why he would carry:
1. To prevent others for using the weapons as they could for evil purposes. (think Boromir at the fellowship meeting. "This is a gift, let men use the one ring to stop evil.") Dorian doesn't know what effects the blades and shirt will have on him as he carries it, but gives the character some inner turmoil to roleplay through.

2. He carries them to prevent the Abyssal creature (see above) that previously owned them, from using them for a ritual to reopen the gate.

3. Maybe the blades whisper subconciously to him of promises of greater power and fortune the more he keeps them. (Evil corrupts)

4. Maybe they were a gift, from an abyssal creature, under the condition, that Dorian slay 1001 creatures to "feed" the payment of the gift. upon the 1001st soul, the swords and chain will then be 'free" and gifted to him.

If you still hate that barghest he came from hell. Perhaps his champion was a hobgoblin soldier who wore that same before your war.

previous suggestions are all still good for the why.
