So I am a long time DM now getting a chance to play but am having the damnedest time coming up with a good original character concept.

So far I know the campaign is in the realms and the party who are merc's in the service of a trading company is low on magic - party of 6 has 3 melee, 1 rogue and 1 divine. Here are the concepts I've come up with but they aren't really grabbing me - suggestions welcome

an elf mage/fighter or pure mage - son of an ousted queen he fled his homeland for his life. He now adventures under an assumed identity to eventually gain enough power to make it home a reclaim his thrown.

a human sorcerer/monk - FR allows the multi class - a classic wanderer; searching the world for all of life's answers (though why would he hook up as a mercenary group)? Also why would he fight if he is gaining knowledge and becoming all zen?

Those are my two concepts - like I said pretty lame. Just throw out some character backgrounds and maybe one will spark my creativity

How about the refining the elf mage/fighter or mage.
Let's see, humans/orcs/rival king invaded his beautiful elven forest-village famous locally for magical traditions and put many elves in jail/dungeon.Those who resisted/opposed the rule were put to the sword
The invaders want to use the magical knowledge of elves and also force them to research/develop/learn some big spells which can help them conquer more lands and win battles
The pc was the son of a elf-wizard,The pc escaped and is adventuring to gather "enough" power and allies so he can go back and free his home from the invaders and his family/friends from captivity
He'll return and try to free his home only when he is reasonably sure of succeeding, because if he fails - his village and people will have lost their last chance to be free

How about being a travelling merchant or trader. In his youth he was a successful businessman. He pedalled his wares in towns and villages and even a city or two as part of a company of traders. With all his wealth, and the time to kill while travelling between sales destinations, he took up magic as a hobby. He started off learning a few cantrips, some spells to make him more likeable to customers, even a combat spell or two to help in case of a robbery. Over the years he lost something, he started having sales slumps and dry spells until eventually he went bankrupt.

Now he has no home or family. He never took the time to settle down and make a home for himself or find a wife. Always, he put this off for one more sales trip, thinking if only he could make a little more money he would be able to provide for a more comfortable life for the wife and kids he might one day have.

With nothing left to do, no where left to go, and no capital to become a travelling merchant, he has no prospects. Out of friendship (or more likely pity, though they would never admit it), the tradesman of the company have agreed to pay him a small stipend for use of his skills with magic, limited though it may be (assuming this is relatively low level char), to protect the caravan from robbers and highwaymen. He works closely with the other PC guards, though, technically, he is seperate from the company of mercenaries that the other PCs belong to.

Ensjak - thanks!!!

That is a great start - it would also explain why he's adventuring with a trading company - being that he is familiar with the routes etc...
