| Godris_Grimsteel01-07-07, 02:04 PM | I have a human sorcerer based on a character from a short story I wrote who I want to eventually get up to a high level and own his own lair and everything. He is at current CN but I'm working on CE by his actions. first question, what is considered an evil act in D&D(such as, would you consider breaking the neck of an enemy after the team captured him and questioned him, evil? like the rest of the team actually was surprised by what I did.), and what do you think of actually playing a campaign or single dungeon with a character who is bent on dominion in the future? Also what kind of skills might be neccesary to upgrade for someone who is CE. |
| Behaigo01-07-07, 06:05 PM | When I play someone that is evil I think of one thing. Random acts of violence. Lawful evil uses law to get whatever he wants. Neutral evil uses evil to get whatever he wants. Chaotic evil kills them both because thats what he wants. |
| PiedmonSama01-07-07, 10:04 PM | Chaotic evil is aggressive and straightforward by preference, but it doesn't necissarily mean "stupid." You are not obliged to run around murdering everything that walks just because your character sheet says "Chaotic Evil." You can still have longterm goals and work towards them as subtly as you feel is warranted---you're simply unhindered by any concerns of petty morality. |
| Kesuk2k501-07-07, 11:59 PM | PiedmonSama is going in the right direction. Chaotic evil creatures resent being forced into things, and usually threatening their own self-continuation is the only method to bully them into something. D&D's default view of good/evil and law/chaos is objective, that is, it's concrete fact. Debates can happen, but just because someone thinks "killing a person just for your own satisfaction isn't evil" doesn't make it so. There are outsiders and gods there to answer those questions and clear up confusion. Chaotic evil creatures have themselves in mind, and while intelligence level is never inter-dependant on alignment (for better or worse), chaotic evil creatures are generally self-centered and very adamantly aggressive about their goals. What your sorcerer did was evil if there was no other reason for snapping the enemy's neck than to hear it break. If he was evil, killing him to stop his evil acts was a good act. If he was evil and you killed him for his money, it wasn't good but it wasn't evil. Also make sure that for the sake of the game continuing, define a limit with your group on how evil your IC actions should be. While evil is never shy, awkward and misunderstood but intentional and malicious, you should keep an attitude similar to some critics of Freud. Keep your evil acts effective and meaningful. Don't put into the game what doesn't need to be there. |
| Tjuk01-11-07, 04:09 AM | I think if you play chaotic evil like murdering everything you see is rather stupid, your in a world with big and powerfull things around, if you run around like that you will get put down easy enough, killing 1 person in town with no particular reason in a town you get put to justice, meaning death. As a level 1 there is a chance that you are walking around and a red dragon flies just above your head, it's a rare occasion but it's possible how would you react to that ? if he would be chaotic evil, would he just kill you for fun?? game over.... Lawfull evil, "Dominator": "A lawful evil villian methodically takes what he wants within the limits of his code of conduct without regard for whom it hurts he cares about tradition, loyalty, and order but not about freedom, dignity, or life. He plays by the rules but without mercy or compassion. He condemns others not according to their actions but according to race, religion, homeland, or social rank. He is Loath to break laws or promises. This reluctance comes partly from his nature and partly becaus he depends on order to protect himself from those who oppose him and moral grounds. Some lawful evil villians have particular taboos, Such as not killing in cold blood (but having underlings do it) or not letting children come to harm (if it can be helped) they imagine that these compunctions put them above unprincipled villians. The scheming baron who expands his power and exploits his people is lawful evil. Some lawful evil people and creatures commit themselves to evil with a zeal like that of a crusader committed to good. Beyond being willing to hurt others for their own ends, They may also see doing evil as part of a duty to an evil deity master. Lawful evil is sometimes called "diabolical"becaus devils are the eptiome of lawful evil. Lawful evil is the most dangerous alignment becaus it represents methodical, intentional, and frequently succesful evil. Neutral evil,"Malefactor": A neutral evil villain does whatever she can get away with. She is out for herself, pure and simple. She sheds no tears for those she kills, wether for profit, sport, or convenience. She has no love of order and holds no illusion that following laws, traditions, or codes would make her any better or more noble. On the other hand, she doesn't have the restless nature or love of conflict that a chaotic evil villain has. The criminal who robs and murders to get what she wants is neutral evil. Some neutral evil villains hold up evil as an ideal, committing evil for its own sake. Most often, such villains are decoted to evil deities or secret societies. Neutral evil is the most dangerous alliagnment becaus it represents pure evil without honor and without variation Chaotic evil,"Destroyer": A chatoic evil character does whatever his greed, hatred, and lust for destruction drive him to do he is hot-tempered, vicious, arbitrarily violent, and unpredictable. If he is simply out for whatever he can get , he is ruthless and brutal. If he is commited to the spread of evil and chaos, he is even worse. Thanksfully, his plans are haphazard , and any groups he joins or forms are poorly organized. Typically, chaotic evil people can be made to work together only by force, and their leader lasts only as long as he can thwart attempts to topple or assinate him. The demented sorcerer pursuing mad schemes of vengeance and havoc is chaotic evil. Chaotic evil is sometimes called "demonic" becaus demons are the epitome of chaotic evil. Chaotic evil is the most dangerous alignment becaus it represents the destruction not only of beauty and life but also of the order on which beauty and life depend. personally i choose for the lawful evil all the time, i see that as the person that does everything to get power. What people do under him he doesn't care about he just wants total controll, making them mere puppets of his evil scheme's them not knowing it. And well if you put yourself in that throne of the old king, you can always change to chaotic evil. But as long as you do not have the power to keep on that throne , theres no reason to try and be it. But that's just my oppinion do with it what you like. |
| strenoth01-11-07, 04:25 AM | not all CE are going to be crazily violent. I do see them as definatly tended towards being prone tomm, passionate moments, and certainly enjoying violence when it's used. and bribingshoudl work at least as well as bullying :) |
| Tjuk01-11-07, 04:36 AM | that's a direct quote from the players handbook mate ;) |
| Kitaki01-11-07, 09:03 AM | Reason for a CE Character to kill someone: "I get that tingly feeling in the back of my spine, ooooooooo" |
| Tjuk01-11-07, 09:31 AM | Right, and well if you want to be able to affort that feeling, you first have to be ontop of the foodchain , else someone will simply eat you up :) |
| JulesCARV01-11-07, 11:22 PM | I think this whole "CE characters are all violent smashers" thing is stupid, even if it comes from the PHB. Take Moist von Lipwig from Going Postal, for instance. As of the start of the novel, he was CE, but avoided violence whenever possible. In D&D, that's a good model for a CE bard, beguiler, or whatnot. |
| Tjuk01-12-07, 02:44 AM | Think that's more NE describtion to be honest |
| Otogi01-12-07, 08:17 PM | There are actually a few ways to act CE. Here's some of them: 1. Above the law Sweep the floors, do the dishes, respect the authorities and be good to everybody. Bullocks. Why should you have to do that? What has this scheduled and orderly crap ever done for you? Nothin', that's what! So why should you have to do it? Besides, its not like it ever works, theres always something out of order. 2. Sudduction The minds of scrawny or pot-bellied men (and naiive or plain women) are easily swayed by your voluptuos body (or rock chiseled muscles), razor sharp wit and knowledge of the pyschology. Love and Marriage? Honor and Respect? Pah! Love, no lust is free and there is no reason to care for another after your done with them. So while others practice for the life of being bound by a code on how to love, you go by whim alone. 3. Slaughter (The person who fit this description could not be stopped. When we questioned him, we could only get a screech of either anger or joy. He didn't stop there, though. He actually killed three of our guards and destroyed our wagon with a tree. No matter, for we know from that scream, that's all we needed to know about this monster you call a man). 4. Devoted to Demons Gods. Disgusting. Why worship something so selfish? You waste your entire life doing they're bidding and all they want, always restricted by something from having that last peice of fun. Even the good ones (Chaotic Evil aligned) have you doing something you don't want to do. Demons, they put under your control for a while, but they're pretty relaxed in comparison. You'll get your share and above that with that with a few years (or centuries) of killing, robbing, maiming and blowing things up, you'll be well on your way (not to mention the above is how you get there). After that its all fun. So, that's I could think of at the moment. |
| Herobane01-13-07, 01:46 AM | As a player with extensive experience in this category, I 'm going to tell you the following: CE characters don't nessesarily kill anyone, I've played CEs that were actually rather peaceful, but those are more difficult to play. CEs are far from stupid. Usually. CEs don't usually kill someone just because. Even if they don't want to tell you, don't EVER assume they did it for no reason, because you could be next. -H |
