| AMGriffin11-17-06, 01:17 PM | Hello. I've made a character for use in my next campaign. His name is Skel and he's a half-orc monk. Stats? Here ya go... Lawful Good Male Half-orc Strength: 17 Dex: 16 Consitution: 16 Wisdom: 17 Intelligence: 13 Charisma: 9 He has only the faintest memories of his parents. His parents were both barbarians (a human male and orc female respectively) who were both outcasts of their respective tribes. He spent only his earliest years with them...probably about until he was 3 before they were killed by a band of goblins. Taken back for food, he was saved by a passing group of hunters who mistook him for a human child (he had no tusks at the time and his skin isn't very gray in color). Though when his orc blood was discovered, they planned on killing him, but instead he was sent to a monastary in the mountains, adopted by a sect of monks. That's about all I've got right now. The only inkling for a roleplaying aspect I have is he constantly struggles to control his temper and adhere to the strict teachings of self-discipline his order has taught. This in turn frustrates him even more. He's endlessly hard on himself and a perfectionist, almost to the point of obsession. His current adventuring bout actually is a self-imposed exile, he seeks to learn more about the world and hone his skills and sharpen his mind while out in the real world so to speak. Any other ideas or suggestions? |

The Stoicism of the Greeks and Romans works well with monks and might work for your character. Stoicism (in a nut shell so don't flame me if I generalize and misinterpret, I'm not a philosopher myself) is based on freeing yourself from desire, controlling your thoughts and being indifferent (as in it is neither good nor bad) to that which is beyond one's will to control. Might work well for Skel as he struggles to control his thoughts and desires but often loses his temper which will serve to frustrate him even more. Try googling Stoicism and read some of "Epictetus's manual" it's short and makes it pretty easy to understand the gist of stoicism. Of course there are a ton of philosophies out there the majority of which will go along nicely with warrior monks of various alignments. |

Maybe they killed each other, or when their tribes heard about their half-breed child they joined forces and hunted them down... then quickly turned on each other afterward. So yeah... anything but the goblins. Also, i like how he has trouble to control his anger (and that he wants to get over that) and how he is hard on himself all the time. Peace |

The goblin thing was cliche yes, but in all honesty I didn't know where else to take it. I didn't want it to be by the hands of orcs or humans, because that seems rather cliche too. How about if it was by something larger and stronger? Like Gnolls or Ogres? |

His continual struggles between his baser instincts (and how very useful they are in combat) and his civilized nature (read: lawful) seem custom tailored to this sort of character. I imagine him to be somewhat of an outcast regardless of where he goes... as much because he makes it htat way for himself as anything. |
