Just curious what your tips are.

I'm considering playing a evil wizard for laughs in our less than serious game. I was thinking he was raised by the EVIL OVERLORDTM but was kicked out to make his way in the world.

Again not going for high drama here.

I'm kind of wondering what sort of odd traits to give him that more or less make the players unsympathetic to his backstory (I'm thinking spoiled rich kid) yet not threatened or really thinking EVIL EVIL wizard

Despite the whole schiteck of serving evil gods, wearing black robes, saying "I am an evil wizard." (yes indeed)

Thoughts?

First, he doesn't smile.

One of his eyes looks slightely like a cats eye, but when someone looks carefully they won't be able to see it.

He shows a strange preference for shadows. I wouldn't exaggrate this trait, but when there's light he walks in the twilight as much as possible.

He values his privacy very much. When someone walks into his room unexpected while he's studying, he shuts his book and asks the other to leave. He doesn't sleep between party members, but sleeps a meter or two from the rest.

When he sleeps his face is grim and silent.

Just my 0.02 cp.

When he's sure no one can see him, he might be petting some colorful butterfly...

This character should be a neutral character (LN, TN or CN), raised to be evil. He tryes to be evil in public, but he is good-hearted.

What Morka wrote sounds like fun. Especially in a "less than serious game".
Someone who even might be good in a detect-spell but keeps up the appearances of being evil because he doesn't want to be a faillure to his father.
You might get some ideas from Doctor Evil from Austin Powers (or maybe mini-me).:D

One idea would be to play with the general idea behind good and evil, in that good people are often selfless, and evil people are often self centered. Perhaps the wizard could be so self centered to the point of myopia. He can simply refuse to consider anything that does not have a benficial impact to him. He always talks endlessly about himself. He refuses to let others have a say that would be contrary to his own superior position.

He says "Whammy" every time one of his spells hits home.

I would play him like Zaphod Beetlebrox (from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy): totally clueless and self-centered, he sees his own abilities as way above what they truly are.

Sighs alot, and when testing his magics, or trying to do something that requires torture or slaughter of an innocent, or otherwise, says "This hurts me far more than it hurts you." or some such.
