| mato_hibiki11-19-06, 02:12 AM | How many people have actually played the hero? I don't just mean one of the good guys, or being all super bad ass 'devil may cry' dante heroic.... How many people out there have just rejoined the party in a way that makes your gaming group's eyebrows raise, and leave them silent with awe? Every group has someone who just stands out as the hero of the story, even if the DM doesn't want you to be, right? I can give an example. My party had just hit town, and my rogue decided he'd had enough of hanging around the goody two shoes for one day. Skimming between the tavern and the marketplace, he bumps into the party wizard, who just happens to be the most diplomatic of the group, and pretty understanding of the rogue's need to be away from people sometimes. The wizard mentions that they're going to be tracking down a powerful undead of some sort in the city sewers, and they could use his expertise. Naturally, I'm playing my character to the hilt, so he grunts, and says "I'll think about it" and wanders off. Ten minutes later, he's decided he can't let the party down, and heads into the sewers alone to track them down. Naturally, by this time, the party is locked in a room, and the buff monk and fighter can't batter down the door. By this point, the ranger is getting antsy about being underground, and the monk has a big mouth that isn't helping. The wizard is just waiting for backup to arrive patiently. So the rogue kicks the door down, steps inside, and asks "Do I always have to be the one saving everybody's asses?" The entire table went silent for a good ten seconds. I have never seen that much awe in sixteen square feet directed at me. And all I had to do was kick in a door. Does anybody else have moments like that? |
| BobtheBiotitan11-21-06, 08:26 AM | This has never happened to me. In the above case the party would have said. "Shut the #%@^ up! We say your ass more then you do ours!!!!!!!!!" It happesn though. |
| Kitaki11-21-06, 08:37 AM | The best cure for those awe stricken silences? Awkward orientation questioning moment. My and my one friend are really good at that, just have the stupid (low Int) char hug the hero. You obviously treat them as the hero, but in the most awkward way possible. |
| Need_A_Life11-21-06, 11:10 AM | No, not really. Sharing the spotlight is essential to group play, and making statements such as always having to save the others is only going to make people angry (usually IC, but if you strike too close to home it might even happen in RL) |
| mato_hibiki11-21-06, 02:00 PM | Nah, sadly, it's become expected for me to pull the group's collective butts out of the fire. But I don't do tanking, or diplomacy, or magic (because then the DM would just give up in disgust, he says) or dramatic betrayals (my brother is LEGENDARY for that one). So, basically, I'm the only one they're happy to hear laughing when everything goes down the crapper. ... Sometimes, I'll have the de-facto party leader look at me, and I'll shake my head and say 'not yet.' I didn't choose to be the hero... Infact, I'm a little puzzled how random rolls sometimes thrust me into that situation. Seventy percent of the time. - "Do I ALLWAYS have to save your butts?" "Yes! Now shut up and do it!" "Fine." |
| Alakar11-21-06, 03:56 PM | Nah, sadly, it's become expected for me to pull the group's collective butts out of the fire. QFT I'm the same way. I normally play a gish character, and have a plethora of options for my character. Anything from diplomacy to blasting, I always seem to have to fill in the gaps when something goes awry, and trust me, it always does with my group. My character now has a fatherly like attitude of "Sure I'll save your butt, but your gonna hear about it later" Most heroic moment, was probably in an early 3.5 adeventure. I was playing my one of my first gish characters. There came a moment when the WEAVE became unstable and threatened to level a good chunk of country side, of which we were very attached to. In a soft whisper to Baccob, and but a breath of hope, he plunged into the rift, and used his own life force (Being a spontaneous caster) to seal the rift. The table went silent, and we still to this day speak of the famous sacrifice. If I remember right one of the females playing in our group cried. He was a well loved character. Of course people would think, we could ressurect him. Alas, my life force was dispersed amongst the weave, and could not be recovered. (It would have lessened the effect of the sacrifice, some times characters just need to die to acomplish a heroic end) Note- (We barrowed the weave idea for the purpose of this adventure, eventhough it wasn't in FR) |
| Billco11-21-06, 08:08 PM | There have been a couple of moments in our game where this has happened, but luckily it has been for pretty much each and every one of the party members. Ylin, my rogue/assasin, got his shot when we were tracking a particulalry nasty Wrym Black Dragon. I had snuck into the dragon's layer and was doing some looting under cover of darkness. As a precaution, I had cast true strike on myself and I had taken the feat Throw Anything as a laugh at the past level. The rest of the party sort of bumbled their way into the cave and woke the dragon, who proceeded to tear the stuffing out of them. Thinking fast, I threw the sword I was busy stealing at the Dragon's head, hoping to distract it. Luckily it was a Vorpal Blade. Luckily I got a Natural 20. Luckily I had cast True Strike. There was really only one possible outcome. I got a standing ovation. Another time, one of the other party members was a favored soul and he ended up tearing off his own wings in defiance of his god. That was awsome. |
| Downtym11-21-06, 11:12 PM | How many people have actually played the hero? <snip> I wouldn't call that heroic. |
| Clockwork_Apparition11-22-06, 03:01 AM | This never happens to me, but I'm always the DM (...god-forsaken lack of imagination in children these days...). I remember one game, though, back when I played 2e... *Cue flash-back* Six brand-new players out of seven. Six PC's, including the PC of the veteran player, are laying on the ground unconscious with the BBEG facing off against the (of all people) wounded elven bard. The BBEG swings, misses. Bard swings, hit, max damage. BBEG swings, misses. Bard swings, critical hit! Drops the BBEG. Bard promptly sees to the (if I remember correctly) wizard, thief, antipaladin, fighter, fighter, and druid. The best part was, the poor kid didn't think too highly of himself (think Eminem, from-the-streets attitude, aggressive smart-mouth type). Seeing him stutter at the praise and graditude was pretty enjoyable; he blushed for at least three hours after that fight! Good times! |
| Siridar11-22-06, 12:52 PM | I had situation that being the hero left everyone speechless including the DM but that was only at my Demise lol. It was FR and I was playing a Half bronze dragon moon elf Fighter 7,Divine Champion 5 and Holy Liberator 1 with a little leniency from the DM. I was large Sized had wings and wielded a fullblade. We were level 12-15. The rest of the group was a halfing bard, Halfling Rogue and a Gnome ranger who all had no hit points what so ever so I always put my self in the way. We were taking an artifact that looked like a huge ruby(that all we knew was magical and had to be taken outta Vaasa.) through the mountains in Vaasa and were attacked by a horde of gibberlings got out of that mess and found a cave. We went through this cave and found a tunnel that led to an large room basically. We see stalatites and Stalacmites everywhere and on this one pedestal is this gargoyle looking dragon looks made outta stone. Now I got a bad feeling automatically and we cautiously made it out to the next section of the tunnel as we pass this statue I place some jewels on the pedastal to appease/slow down whatever's gonna happen. The group passes as I do this and the thing comes alive. Turns out it was a Kirlanan/half Shadowdragon geez. So it flys down and faces off against me and the rest of its clan fly's down and traps the party. So I face off against this thing claw to claw to teeth. Trying to buy time. The rest of the party is watching including the enemies. I had like 150-160 hp and I take 50 first shot and then 50 more second shot I'm like ow ok. During this I'm slammed it against the wall breathed lightning on it and backed away. The rest of the party is now engaged in combat. The gnome ranger crits on 2 kukri's on one enemy and ID's it. The Rogue is hit and taken for almost have his hitpoints runs away. The bard greases the floor and runs and slides through the legs of one enemy after getting wailed on. I see this us my action to jump tumble and slide into the way as she goes careening to the wall to go splat. I make my rolls and catch her. We get up and the entire group surrounds me. The next largest one hits me for 30 points of damage and I tell the DM I drop down to one knee after I take that hit. I've got like 30 hitpoints left, another player asks me how many hp I've got left and I silently tell him and he's like oh crap. The evil Halfdragon comes up and hits me for 50 points of damage. I stand up in RL and say I'm done, I'm dead. The entire room just goes silent. I'm a little sad at my fav character of all time obviously getting hosed. I start to leave the room to go outside to cool off and I hear the DM go what do you mean your dead how is that possible so I list the damage I took and she gets this frantic look and starts shuffling papers. No one is saying a word they just keep looking back at me and her. She then uses said artifact to raise me and help heal me as I have to finish off this monster and 6 other Kirlanans because the rest of the group are almost dead they had like 60 hp full health at most. |
