The goal is to create a character with lots of material for the DM to use for adventure hooks. ------------------------------------------------------- Bryn Shadowcloak Common name: Brynkel Thistlereed Fullname: Brynkal Dairli Kinwort Professional name: Bryn Shadowcloak Nicknames: Winkin' Brinkle, Bryn, Reddy Aliases: Thinkrimmel the Sharp, Colfox, Firefly Race: Halfling Class: Rogue (to multiclass with Wizard(diviner) and enter the Daggerspell Mage prestige class) Alignment: Chaotic Neutral STR 8 DEX 16 CON 13 INT 15 WIS 13 CHA 15 Description: Brenkel is a small, thin halfling with pale skin and red hair who looks like a strong wind could carry him away. Yet he is very quick and light on his feet, and never seems to miss a step.. He never seems too worried about what's going on, and people tend to trust his opinion, inexplicably since he's young and a halfling as well. He has bright intelligent green eyes and is always in the middle of things, and often has a quick joke or comment. His curiosity is insatiable, and he's always jotting notes down in a fat leather book he keeps with him. He generally wears a green cloak and hat with a purple thistle pinned to it, but owns a dark cloak and black leather armor, which he calls his work clothes. He is the youngest son of Dairli Thistlereed, bard and storyteller of Meadowlark, a caravan of halfling families. Represented in Meadowlark are the Thistlereed, Silverleaf, Glitterwild, and Shadowglen clans. Dairli Thistlereed was once a member of the infamous Caravan of Shadows in his youth and still recounts the stories of his times accompanying them. Dairli's wife, Kelysi was born to the Hollowwind clan, one of the member-clans of the Caravan of Shadows. Bryn has two brothers and one sister; his brothers are traveling but his sister lives with his parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. The Thistlereed clan, also known as Clan Kinwort, has a long tradition of bardic magic, and many well-known storytellers have come from the clan of the dancing weed. Brenkel grew up listening to his parents' stories of adventure and the music of the festivals, and watching the tricks and magic of his father. Unlike many halfling children, he was taught to read and write by his parents, and has always kept a journal filled with his observations of the world around him, sketches, and valuable writings he's acquired over the years. His ability to acquire new and interesting things has only grown as he grew older. As a child, he would visit fairs and festivals while his father performed and learned young how to earn a few gold coins and shiny trinkets by gleaning from the spectators. His parents and other relatives helped him develop his crowd skills and his uncle Penelus introduced him to the art of door-opening. Wanderlust pricked Brenkel at an early age, and he couldn't wait until his Coming of Age at 17. He left Meadowlark and headed south towards the human city, intent on learning as much as his head would hold. Though gems and coins still interest him, like any healthy halfling, Brenkel's true excitement lies in books, magical charms, maps, and ancient scrolls. He cannot seem to collect enough books and stores them in an old unused root cellar he discovered near the city limits. He shares a small studio with another halfling named Perydric, a lazy romantic youth who seems content drifting through life, but he wouldn't dream of letting Pery in on his secret hoard of books. Brenkel's goals are to learn as much as he can about the world around him, as he continues to be drawn back to the arcane arts. He is a decent musician and he'll frequently spend his evenings playing a small reed flute. As a casual musician, he never delved much into bardic magic, which he considers mostly tricks and flattery, and is searching to learn what he considers 'true magic,' the arcane arts of the wizards. He has never personally known a true master wizard, so he has little formal training, but he continues to scour for more knowledge about the arcane arts. Another goal is to become a member of the Caravan of Shadows, following in his father's footsteps. In fact, he dreams of one day being powerful enough within the caravan to convince the Shadows to induct the Thistlereed clan into their caravan, a difficult task to accomplish, as they are very strict on who can become member clans, and certainly a monumental moment in his clan's history. His outlook on life is mostly carefree in daily life, but he searches for arcane knowledge with utmost seriousness. He takes notes of everything around him, and has amassed solid knowledge on plants and animals and local life in the human city. While his passion for magical training leads him, there are some branches of magic he considers repulsive: primarily those dealing with undead and the dark arts. Through his entire life, Brenkel has felt that death is an adventure all must take, and he considers undeath and grave robbery an offense to those who wish to continue their journey in peace. He once witnessed an attack by skeletons on Meadowlark as a young child, due to a short detour near an ancient dark temple. The vivid images of the unatural bones shuffling along filled him with sadness and fear. Despite his loathing of all things undead, his moral compass is a bit shifted away from true good. He feels no real compunction about stealing from others or lying to make things easier, guided only by what's practical. While he forms a strong bond with his friends, and would never do anything to hurt them, he is mostly indifferent to strangers. Sometimes he seems a bit selfish, turning down opportunities to help others so he can focus on his latest project, or hunt down an obscure map showing ancient grain barge routes. He also has been known to con others out of something he feels he needs, or failing that, outright steal it. He is disinterested in politics, wars, and formal religion, though he will frequently say a prayer to halfling and human deities when necessary, and leave an offering at a crossroad or wayside shrine. He is rather suspicious of half-orcs in particular, and also dwarves to a lesser extent. He has had more dealings with humans and elves and feels pretty comfortable around them. Paladins and clerics make him feel a little uncomfortable, especially if they're particulary preachy. He is somewhat superstitious, and sometimes confuses the small folk magics he saw growing up with real arcane magic. As a result, he is careful to look for omens, toss pennies in wells, cut plants with his left hand, and other common safeguards. Brenkel is a freelance pickpocket, burglar, fence and forger currently. He frequently disguises himself as an old gnome, named Thinkrimmel the Sharp. Under this persona he fences gems and small valuables that friends and contacts bring him. When he goes on covert missions or burglaries on occasion, he dyes his hair black and affects the childlike persona of Coflox. He occasionally will act as a lookout or mole for professional burglars, but so far has had limited dealings with the underworld. As of right now, he's just another halfling kid working the festival crowds and late night taverns, with the odd job scouting or fencing for more professional rogues. |
