| FRRC10-17-06, 03:15 PM | A Bard: A generally weak opponent in some sense so he always has some back-up. The PCs usually find him consorting with other NPCs who have a bad rep that are usually accused of doing evil deeds. The twist is that he is the good King's assisstant and always manages to weasel out of any accusations the players point towards him. |
| JulesCARV10-17-06, 04:29 PM | Marty MacLeod, chaotic evil half-elf bard Marty MacLeod is a silver-tongued, intelligent half-elf obsessed with easy riches. He has been in and out of jails, fled a few countries, and changed his name a few times, but his tricks and cons never change. Marty is a handsome man, with an easygoing demeanor, and always has a witty wisecrack or self-deprecating joke that puts others at ease. He prides himself on his firm handshake and steady gaze, and can tell outrageous lies without being caught or even resorting to glibness, which he regards as something of an amateur's crutch. A low-level MacLeod might be a down-on-his-luck con artist trying to pull a fake fiddle or three card monte trick, after his previous enterprises collapsed and he had to flee the law and reestablish himself. Later on, Marty might establish himself as a "respectable citizen" in the land, and become a more serious danger. He claims to be an entrepreneur focused on uncovering ancient magic on lost continents and such. This provides him with several oppurtunities for fraud and embezzlement. One of his schemes is to send a small flotilla of ships sailing for the "lost continent," (a Xen'drik-like place) to seek ancient treasure. However, most of the ships are, unbeknownst to the crew, insured for far more than they're really worth, because Marty had the ships much better equiped when the actuaries appraised them, and illegally stripped them of many of their features after the appraisal, secretly selling off the equipment through intermediaries. He has secretly sabatoged some of them to sink in the middle of the ocean, recovering more than they're worth in insurance money -- and, not of much concern to Marty, killing the crew and passengers. When the (much reduced) flotilla of "explorers" returned from the Lost Continent, Marty starts a pyramid scheme based on some form of newfound arcana found on the previous "voyage of exploration" that will supposedly make item creation much simpler and cheaper. The newfound arcana is fake: it's just a pyramid scheme, but many of the people near the top of it are loyal to the bard, and are willing to ruin the lives of doubters and skeptics (people with enough knowledge (arcana), sense motive, or whatever to know that it's fake) through widespread, public smear campaigns. Meanwhile, many people are putting their life's savings into it. As for his part, Marty is continually growing richer and richer, and wondering when he should disappear before the scheme collapses. If he gets away with it, though, he will probably appear again under a new identity. His new identity might just seek more wealth like the old ones -- dealing drugs, conducting more fraud, or whatever. On the other hand, Marty might decide that he has enough money, and might try to enter into politics or religion, acquiring widespread power and respect, in addition to his already vast (at this point) wealth. Marty is a wily, deceitful opponent. He has no honor and will do anything to beat opponents and acquire money, no matter how many lives he must ruin. He has two main weaknesses, though: one is that he holds violence in contempt. He is willing to see people dead to make himself richer, but he regards killing with actual blood, swords, and spells to be a crude tool of the incompetent. Another weakness is his pride -- he sometimes takes risks he needn't because of some aesthetic preference that he takes pride in. For instance, he prefers to avoid using magic, because it is inelegant compared to true mundane skill. He'd much prefer to deceive his shareholders with a mundane bluff check than use glibness. He'd much rather try to disguise himself with a basic disguise check than cast alter self. He would prefer to have others delight in his innate wit and banter than use fascinate. He will use magic, but if he thinks he can get away without using it, he will. |
