| InsanePsychoRabbit12-13-06, 04:06 PM | In a FR campaign I play a sorcerer who was banished from her hometown for 'being a witch'. She came from a very conservative town in the south of Damara, where she watched over the children and she secretly used her fire and illusion magic to keep them warm and happy. The fact that she uses fire spells extensively makes it more ironic that she was nearly burned at the stake. It was the children who came to her defense and convinced the townspeople that she should live, but she can never return to her hometown again... Personality-wise, she's good with kids, but she can be a bit moody - you don't want to be around her when she loses her temper (she got into a huge argument with my fighter one session, it was kinda funny). She's also not the type to give up. Mostly, though, she's kind and benevolent, and doesn't want innocent people to come to harm - so she fights for the greater Good. I still have no idea where she gets her powers from. |

Basically Dremon, a halfling sorceror was forced to the streets and has a couple levels in rogue but was caought doing magic without a license and was sold into slavery instead of being put to death, but was bought by his adventuring companions and is treated as an equal among the group but publically is a slave. Despite this he keeps a good disposition and wishes that magic users gain the freedom of others. |
| Paneki12-14-06, 12:28 PM | My Sorcerer comed from a great line of clerics of Pelor. On a stormy night, the temple was attacked. When he saw his sister being slay by the lead bandit, a burst of energy came into his body and killed the bandit with "a burst for energy" (obviuosly a magic missile) he thougth that power came from Pelor and his faith in him. But suddenly everyone realized that was not quite true. His faith remained unbroken, but he also decided that was best to discover himself if it was worth gaining arcane power over the holy one that he was destined to have later. That happened when he was about 17 years old. Later, he mastered more arcane magic and multiclassed to a Cleric of Pelor by disguising some of his magic in public. The church of pelor didn' t have anything against spellcasters, but the people of his village did see him quite weird. After being devote to both, his Deity and his own powers. He became a Mystic Theurge, thus adquiring the mixture of Arcane and Holy power for the sake of good. |
| JulesCARV12-14-06, 04:13 PM | This is a background I posted before (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=752649), but no one paid any attention, so I guess I might post it again. It's a bit of an unusual sorcerer background: rather than being magical owing to innate power, he was trained in magic as a cleric. When he lost his faith in the Blood of Vol, though, he lost most of his magical power, but since he still had some magical training (y'know, spellcraft, familiarity with verbal and somatic components, etc), he found that he could still do a bit of magic without faith, but much weaker than that which he used to command (basically, he went from being a level 5+ cleric to being a level 1 sorcerer). This is a bit of a munchkiny character, but that doesn't mean he can't have a good background: basically, the idea behind this build is to be an NE human sorcerer 6/mage of the arcane order 4/ur-priest 2/mystic theurge 8, and start at middle or old age, since this character is rather mental-attribute dependent. Lichdom might be a long-term objective, especially if I go for low constitution (thanks to the long-term effects of the Order of the Emerald Claw's poisoning attempt). I'm just wondering about how this concept would work. I don't actually have a game to use it in at the moment, but I'll post it here anyway. Why not, y'know? Berthold was born in the midst of the Last War. He was raised by his family to be a fierce Karrn nationalist and a devout worshipper of the Blood of Vol. He eventually became a cleric of the Blood of Vol, helping to fight against the followers of the false claimants to Galifar's throne, heal Karrnath's wounded and animating undead to aid Karrnath's military. Yet as the war went on, he found that his faith in the Blood of Vol was becoming increasingly shaky. The Blood of Vol promised immortality at some point, yet the final battle between the Blood of Vol and the Sovereigns of Death always seemed to be "soon," an apocalypse that was always imminent, but never came. Worse, the Church seemed to view Karrnath more as a resource to be harvested than an ally to help. As the Blood of Vol focused on expanding its own power, while letting its contributions to Karrnath's fighting force languish, Berthold began to resent being sent on missions to strongarm Karrnathi followers of the Sovereign Host and the Silver Flame into converting when he could have been on the front, fighting against Brelish and Cyreans. In addition, being a powerful cleric within the church, he saw the connections between the terrorists in the Order of the Emerald Claw and the official, legal Blood of Vol. The final blow, however, came with the Treaty of Thronehold. Berthold, a fervent believer in King Kaius III's right to rule all of Galifar, was bitterly disappointed by the treaty, particularly the recognition of the independence of former parts of Karrnath such as the Mror Holds. The Blood of Vol, however, seemed to view the peace as an oppurtunity to expand its power into other nations without being regarded as agents of Karrnath, and seemed indifferent to the loss of Karrnathi land. He attempted to cling to his faith in the Blood of Vol, but found that he no longer possessed it. His holy symbol was nothing but a mass of worthless silver. His meditations brought him not even the simplest of orisons. He could not command the negative energy that once made undead cower before him in awe. Berthold nonetheless remembered a bit of magic from his training as a cleric. He knew how to wield verbal and somatic components. He was adept at spellcraft. He began to try to wield magic without faith or prayer. He found that he could cast a few spells, but they were much weaker than the magic he had commanded as a cleric. He had been reduced from a mighty cleric to little more than a magewright. Berthold cried bitterly, for his lost power, for his homeland's misfortunes in the terrible war and the terrible peace that followed, for his lost faith, and drank heavily. The next day, drunk and bleary-eyed, he announced to the clergy of the Blood of Vol that he could no longer serve them. Although many in the Blood of Vol did not wield divine magic (i.e., expert-priests), Berthold knew that his loss of power would not go unremarked. Moreover, his disillusionment with the Blood of Vol rebelled against the idea of him continuing to serve them when they had betrayed him and his nation. Berthold spent the next week in a drunken stupor, fearing that he would spend the rest of his life as a common magewright, but the Order of the Emerald Claw, angry at his apostasy, intervened. A week after he renounced the Blood of Vol, an Emerald Claw assassin poisoned his beer by dissolving burnt othur fumes into it. He was severely sickened by the poison, but survived, although it is likely that he will never recover some of the damage the poison did to him. After recovery, he found a new, savage determination to win revenge against the Order of the Emerald Claw, against the Blood of Vol, against all of the lying religions, and to redeem Karrnath's honor and sovereignty, restore King Kaius III's royal authority, and to regain the power over life and death he had once wielded. This time, he would lean on no faith as a crutch. |
| FiestFan12-14-06, 09:43 PM | Gurtan was a foundling left at the doorstep of the local Monastary. As he grew, he trained with the monks for a while, learning basic forms and techniques. The rigorous, introspective life of the monk not for Gurtan, though, as he sought more excitement. Eventually, his forays into the outside world caused enough trouble that he was asked not to return, although he'd broken no explicit rules. Without a serviceable trade, Gurtan lived hand to mouth on the streets, panhandling and skulking in the shadows. One night, a group of local toughs tried to roll him. Backed into a corner, Gurtan unleased a flurry of expertly placed kicks and punches that he was surprised to find infused with arcane power. He scrounged together a few silvers the next day and sought out others who could teach him to harness this inner strength, and, with teaching, his unknown heritage became unlocked, turning him into something much more than human. | Zemyla12-20-06, 07:14 PM | Dars is a smart, personable, ambitious young man who was training to become a wizard. However, he got fed up with the limitations of wizardry (namely, the spellbook and the constant research) and he started researching a way to circumvent these limitations. Now, this is something that has eluded most archmages, so it would be unlikely that an apprentice would figure it out. But in his hubris, he tried anyway. And he actually came up with something. A method of infusing his brain with spells. He quickly tried it, only to realize the drawback: he couldn't get any other spells than the ones he infused himself with. He also realized that if he tried to infuse too many spells into himself, he'd burn out his brain completely. So now he's effectively a sorcerer. He goes on adventures to do research, and also to expand his mind. Every so often, he has to re-infuse himself to gain more spells, and to clear out some that have outlived their usefulness. He's different from most sorcerers in that he knows the theory of what he's doing, as well as the practical aspects. He is, however, driven and obsessed, and he believes that eventually he will be able to know every spell ever created. |
