His early childhood was rife with what many called ill fortune or just plain bad luck. It started subtlely enough with simple things that could be easily dismissed. He would lose the coins from his small allowance,or the general store would always be out of just the candy he wanted. If there was a leak in the roof it was always right above his bed. The list goes on and on. Malachai tried diligently to keep his chin up and a positive mindset, until the night that fate's apparent vendetta against him took a more serious and pointed turn. While the family slept the house caught fire, and in an instant everything in his life was turned to ash. The hair on half of his head seared off, his skin badly burned, and his only family dead, Malachai tore at the rat hole in his sleeping chamber behind his father's kiln with an iron that further burnt his hands. Through tears of sorrow and pain he cursed fate and vowed never again to play by it's rules. He would no longer be a victim of chance he would be it's master. He collapsed into the last snow of the season and fell into a deep sleep. As he dreamt he saw the turning wheels, the rolling dice, and the flipping coin of fate. He reached out in his mind and grasped hold of these visions and slipped them neatly into his pocket. He was then awoken by the creature who would become his co-conspiritor against fate, the rat who's whole into his house had saved him. I shall call you "Cinder" let us both be reborn from this fire. In Cider's mouth he saw a glinting circle, it was his mother's symbol of Fharlaghn, he took this as a sign and began the slow and painful journey to the roadside shrine/ makeshift temple to that god at the outskirts of his town. The priestess there healed him, but as he had no coin he could not stay the night. He found refuge in the stables of the Inn only to be chased out at broom point the next morning. The town that Malachai lived in had made an arrangement with a Wizard some 60 years in the past, in exchange for some level of protection the Wizard would have his pick of the towns children for an apprentice once every 10 years. After 9 months of living on the streets his only friends being Cinder and a rougish street rat named Loki, Malachai gripped tightly on the wheels, dice and coin he had pictured in that dream so long ago, when the Wizard appeared the choice of apprentice would fall to Malachai, and it did. 10 years of study, labor and travels to places Malachai had never heard nor dreamt of had given him his first arsenal of weapons against fate.
