| lastofthelight04-23-07, 10:38 AM | I don't know if this is the right forum, but its the closest I could find. I need plot input on a campaign I'm doing. (And I sure hope my players don't read this forum!) I'm running a D20 future game; without elves or psionics or magic. I have a setting, but need input on the feel of the theme/how to handle the plot. I'm going for a theme of 'scifi-exploration'; though I wantes some lovecraftian/aliens style horror, and perhaps a touch more realism then typical scifi. Here is the setting: The year is 2050, the setting is the future of our world. There are no psionics or magic or elves or such. The world's two major superpowers, the European Union and the People's Republic of China, are locked in a major arms race; and have found an outlet through a space race. Each seeks to be the first to create a ship capable of traveling to another star system; Alpha Centauri A, a star much like our sun, which is thought (even today IRL) - to have terrestrial planets. Each has developed a ship capable of bringing a small number of people in cryogenic storage to that system, which is 4.6 ly away, in about 7 years. The official mission is to (mainly) reach the system and return home; with the possibility of the crew extending the mission if they can find appropriate natural resources (in the form of fuel and metals) for processing; in other words - if they can manage to visit Alpha Centauri B and C; good for them. The return trip will also take about 7 years, if all goes as planned. The PC's will almost certiainly go cruising off to other stars instead. The PC ship is using a Solar Sail and a Bussard Ramjet for propulsion (their choice) - the Chineese one is using fusion tech. The PC one (once again, their choice) - is larger, more oriented towards science, probably with a biodome/hydroponics bay inside; while the Chineese ship is smaller and more combat-oriented. They havn't voted on whether or not they'll have gravity yet; if they don't I'm sure that biodome will be...interesting. Anyways, I was initially planning to use Lovecraftian 'influences' (such as the Mi-Go, the Flying Polyps, the Yithians) - as aliens; because I don't want aliens (whatever I do) - to fall under the 'star trek syndrome' - where they are all humans with pointed ears, or tall humans or green humans or <insert color here> humans. I have an initial plot worked out for the first planet they'll encounter, based around the Mi-Go and some leftover hibernating Flying Polyps...but I'm seriously considering, for the sake of long-term plot, if I shouldn't also feel free to insert my own aliens/species. I'm very creative and can come up with all sorts of ideas; but I'm not sure if doing so would cheapen the theme/experience. Input? EDIT: I think I found a better forum; didn't see the dedicated sci-fi forum before - sadly, there is no 'delete post' option, as far as I can see. Sorry! |
