So, without making the story real long, I'm running a solo campaign which loosely follows the idea behind Breath of Fire 2. As the player is a wizard and not the most survivable of classes and I don't include many NPCs, I've given him little "perks". We focus more on the story then keeping with all the nuances of the rules.

Soon the story comes to a point where Genus (the PC) discovers that he has demonic ancestry which will open a new door of abilities to him.

Anywho, the question I pose to you all is this: what "nifty" powers would you give a 10th level wizard who is turning out to be a bit of a demon hunter though he is part demon (or devil...doesn't really matter) himself?

Many thanks!!

Take a look at demon (or devil) attributes and abilities. See if there's anything they all have in common. Perhaps they can all naturally weild fire, if so give your mage a bonus when using any fire based spell. Or, maybe he gets a bonus using spells against which demons are particularly weak.

What about appearances? What if your mage started to exhibit some demonic qualities in his outward appearance, like tiny horns that begin to grow on his forehead everytime he uses fire based spells. Maybe his shadow takes on a faint glow or doesn't move quite in sync with his own movements, attracting the attention and suspiscion of others. What if he started growing a tail, and the more powerful he becomes, the more his demonic aspect presents itself, so that at higher levels he looks like the creatures he hates.

Artifacts and powerful items designed to be used to attack or protect against demons would be logical, too.

However, you should try to maintain balance. For everything you give, you have to take something away. Sure, he gets a bonus with fire spells, but maybe he loses the ability to weild cold based spells. Maybe his changing appearance causes people to believe he IS a demon, and leads to his persecution. Okay, he gets an artifact, but at what cost? Does it drain his life energy?

Just think of the salary cap in football. Sure, you can pay through the nose for the best player in the league, but you're going to have to let go some very good players and hire a bunch of scrubs to make ends meet.

For every gift, a curse. For every bonus, a penalty.
