I have a fighter who worships Illmater. Long story short, our party is captured, and before the rest of the party is sacrificed, I get to be "entertainment" for the bastards by fighting in a gladitorial pit.

If I refuse to fight, the party dies. If I try to escape, the party dies. You get the drift here.

Anyway, I'm looking for some thoughts on a good prayer to Illmater since some good role-playing may convince the GM to help out a little.

Thanks

I do not know Illmater. Could you tell me something about him? Portfolio? Domains? That is essential for a prayer.

'For my pain, grant me victory'
'Their blood for my own'

Thats all i can really think of at the moment, short and sweet.

Hope it helps some.

Peace

Throw away your suit of armor (if any) and then: "My blood for the Broken God!"

Edit: besides make a good plan with other players to escape. If your armor (if any) is spiked or otherwise with sharp edges you can throw it near your friends (if present): they can surreptitiously use it to cut their binding (if ropes) while you are Russel-Crowe-ing to distract your enemies.

In heart my melody does cry for thee
though pained by battle long
for thy suffering does mine belittle
and lifts up the spirit of my song

Really, Ilmater isn't a flashy deity. He appreciates patience, endurance, and modesty; a public prayer of that sort isn't the sort of thing a follower would typically do. The sacrifice you are making for your friends may somehow (through karmic balance?) reduce their suffering- a chief interest of the Broken God. Something simple said in modest privacy to your friends that expresses your intent and wishes would be suitable. A couple dogmas of the faith might help you work out what you want:

"The truly holy take on the suffering of others."
"There is no shame in a meaningful death."

On the other hand, it is noted that "[Ilmater's] wrath is terrible in the face of extreme cruelty" (F&P, 30). Maybe your character is seeing himself as the instrument of Ilmater's wrath. In this case, you might make it clear through gestures that your fury in the ring would be gladly directed toward your captor instead of the monsters he puts in there with you, and shout to him a maxim derived from this:

"Stand up to all tyrants, and allow no injustice to go unchallenged."

In my mind there's really no better thing to say to a really intimidating gladiatorial adversary than something to the effect of "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die"

Now, translating that to an Ilmater cleric: "Hello, my name is [Character name]. You have been told to kill me. Prepare to die"

"Should I fall today, know this; an innocent man will have been murdered before the eyes of a hundred people, yet no one will say anything. I pray that my death will be the snowball that starts the avalance to stop this barbaric tradition."

Stolen, rewritten and changed to fit the situation from a 38 year old man who was died from a lethal injection in the state of Texas 1997.

If you're going to make final words, pick the classics.

The only prayer that I would find appropriate would be something to the effect of:

"Illmater, He who endures, I beseech thee, let not my suffering be in vain. If I fall let it be for the betterment of those who cannot stand."

Before the battle "We shall both feel pain this day. I am prepaired, are you?"

Then during the battle each time you are hit build a mantra. "Through my pain you grow weak, through endurance I gain power over my tormentors, you will fall before my blade and receive your tortures in 10 fold return."

If Ilmater does not respond to those actions, then the fault will not lay with you.
