i'm thinking about playing an evil campaign, with my character being CE to the extreme. my problem is what motivation i could possibly have to not kill the other pc's in my party in their sleep and simply taking their gear. so i was thinking, and decided that it would be possible to have mine and the other player's characters have some kind of relationship that would already be in place, for instance a family relationship, or even being in love. i was wondering if anyone had tried something like this before (not necessarily in an evil campaign), and how they rp'ed, how it turned out, what their thoughts on it were.

We played an evil campaign a while back. The party (a mix of NE and CE) were henchmen of an evil wizard. They all lived in the dungeons and towers of this wizards stronghold.

Then a party of "good adventurers", managed to kill the wizard, and found out (via a speak with dead spell) that there was a stronghold.

One the party (pre-campaign), found out, and the group (who were now masters of this stronghold) decided that they'd stick together and defend themselves until they'd rid themselves of these evil-hunters.

Thus the adventures were about tracking down the good adventurers and extracting revenge (well, actually, it was more along the lines of extracting the magic items that the adventurers had stolen off their former master's body).

No PC trusted any other, yet they had a common goal that held them together.

It was a very short campaign... it was difficult to sustain. Especially once the adventurers were slain and the loot acquired. But perhaps you could build something on these ideas that lasts a little longer.

Another way to bind the party together is to have an even stronger leader. This could be an NPC (who is travels with them, or directs them remotely) or a PC (if your group could handle that).

Alternatively an item might hold the group together (no... not rope!). I mean something like a magical orb, that instructs them, or a telepathy evil-artifact or religious relic.

Or perhaps even something common place. An empty treasure chest? Or what about a pirate's ship?

I think the important thing is that CE will not fight itself, while it has a better target to distract it.

So just don't giving the group too many idle moments ;)

It could be for the same reason that good aligned folks adventure together:
somethings simply can't be done alone,
common cause against a group/entity/npc/etc,
working together will just about always ensure greater amount of wealth/treasure/items..
