| M304-29-05, 02:45 PM | The Port of Shadows is no place to wander without a strong sword arm or the might of the arcane to protect one’s interests. Although barely tolerated by its lighted twin, Waterdeep. Skull Port has claimed not only the lives of its denizens but also robbed many of their future. Yet it continues to thrive in its illicit trade in slavery and items only made by those creatures that find shadows more comfortable then the light of day. However bleak Skull port is described, it is not the center of this story, only the backdrop. The first memory the young man known as Void, a appropriate title for a child with nothing but his wits to survive, is that of running the streets of Skull port as a child. How he got there, he has no clue. The only thing he remembers is running from the slavers and the gangs of thieves that wanted more then to just steal the rags off his back. Void always had a knack of keeping his head down and listening to the right people at the right time. Gathering information that lead him to the best trash heaps, to claim his next meal or when to lay low in the alleys when the slavers would comb the streets for fresh meat. So Void’s life was spent mostly running from one alley to another. Avoiding the creatures that lived in Skull port. The worst were the Mind Flayers who would not be above grabbing an unattended child off the streets to consume. Void like all the other children feared that fate above all things. However it was when his nightmare was about to come true did Void learn that he had some abilities that allowed him to make a better place for himself. Late in the night when Void and many of his comrades were searching a pile of refuse for food. A woman dressed in flowing robes slowly approached the children and offered some food stuffs. Many children ran away but Void had not eaten in 3 days and was hungry beyond his street gained wisdom. So Void and 2 other urchins approached the lady. Then suddenly Void found himself being awoken by the crunching of bone and the slurping sound coming from the mind flayer consuming a child lying next to him. The illusion that tricked the children had fallen away from the Mind flayer as he concentrated on his very tender meal. Void found he could not move and the Mind Flayer was making his way to him. As a tentacle wet with the gore of his previous victim came into touch with his head Void screamed or tried to scream for help yet nothing came out. But something inside him seemed to break lose, something he had always known was there but unable to put to form. Then suddenly, a pure silver and shinning cat appeared out of nowhere and attacked the Mind flayer. The attack did very little except to surprise the Mind flayer. The surprise was enough for Void and he was able to scramble away and run like he had never run before, with the wings of fear carrying him far from danger. After that eventful night Void started using his new found abilities to make a much more comfortable living for himself. Void discovered he was able to manipulate adults who gave charity to him, to give again and again. Soon Void had enough coin to get off the streets and live in Inns or brothels which ever suited his purposes and time went by. Void has for the past few years lived the life of a king, in the mind of a starving boy. Yet Void’s life of adventure has just begun. For the powers that control what comes in and out of Skull port did not miss the sudden rise of a street urchin. |
| Harrow Blade04-30-05, 03:56 AM | I like, your backstory. Skullport is such an interesting backdrop but I wonder did it affect him more deeply than a childhood on teh streets. I mean Skullport is such a neferious and evil place to survive is sure to leave more than just physical scars. I had a few questions. what discipline is you character? how old is he and how is it he survived to rise in skull port (what level)? |
| Worguron04-30-05, 04:01 AM | I am assuming Shaper (I assume the cat was an Astral Construct). This character could be a great chance to RP some interesting quirks. He could be EXTREMELY paranoid and skittish. He could devour every meal as if he won't get another for months. He could have flashback/nightmares about the bad times in his life. The possibilities really are endless. |
| M304-30-05, 09:28 AM | I am starting this character at level 1. I just provided this background to my GM for RP material. I post with each new charcter I start...I think I may have posted one or two more stories back around a year ago or so. My GM makes you earn your levels in vert challenging ways. He is a Telepath with the feat, approved by the GM, Hidden Talent so he could acquire Astral Contruct. He was able to get repeated donations by the use of De Jevu. I plan on playing him as a Neutral charcter, willing to do whatever it takes to look out for number one. The only soft spot he may have is for homeless children. All others he will probably consider a threat to his next "meal"... Thanks for the feedback, it help with my conceptualization of Void. |
